Sometime last year, I wrote up a little thing on Minecraft and how awesome it was. I made sure to go all out because Minecraft was amazing, it was so amazing that when I heard it was coming to the Vita, I made sure to buy it. I actually ended up buying the PS3 version and downloaded it on my friends PS3 just so he could have it and I would get the free Vita download that came with it. I figured what else could be better than Minecraft than playing it on the go? I’ll figure that it should still bea lot of fun, even if it wouldn’t be as big as the PC version. I’ll admit, it wasn’t as good as the PC version for multiple reasons but it still was so much fun and I’m glad that I bought it.

GRAPHICS 7/10

The graphics for this version aren’t really all that great for a variety of reasons when. First off, the graphics for the PC version where really as good as they can be because they kind of were revolutionary and were the stepping stones for something that was iconic. This isn’t the same game that everyone grew to love, it’s just a variation of it so when you look at the graphics, you don’t really have that same feel to it. On top of that, since the game is so much smaller, each item is much smaller and in some cases because of that this, the graphics don’t really have that much detail and there had even been a few points where I couldn’t tell what a block or item was because it didn’t really look like what you think it would look like.

Still, the graphics are quite good even though they are all blocks and don’t have too many details, but they are all full of color and there’s a lot of different graphics and animations as well. There is one really cool thing about the graphics and that would be all of the texture packs. You can get various textures for the PC version but for the most part you need to download them from site and then do all sorts of stuff to get them into the game but with this version you can buy packs right from the Playstation Store or even from the game and have them sitting as an option when you play the game and can even try them out for free. These packs make the game look so much cooler, you can make everything look like a city or you can make every block look like candy or something you would see in a Fantasy game. The base graphics of the game are pretty standard and all right but when you add all the various customization that you can do to them, they get just a bit better and as for a grade, this aspect of the game is going to get a 7 out of 10.

SOUND 8/10

It’s just about the same as the sounds that you hear in the PC version but there’s nothing wrong with that because the sounds from there are already iconic and we all know the sounds if we had played at least once. Really, nobody’s going to forget the sound that a villagers makes or the sound of a door opening and closing, those are all sounds that we have probably heard so many times that they are engraved in our memories. There’s so many different sounds too, from water and lava, to the various mobs, all the way down to every single action that you do, and this version is no different than the PC version, it has every last one of them.

On top of that, you have the music of the game. It’s not as energetic or as entertaining as other songs from other games, but it’s still very iconic and fun to listen to. I don’t think that there are as many songs as there are in the PC version, I think some of them might have been taken out from this version, but the ones that are still there are pretty good and will play at various points. If you have really good headphones where you can hear every last sound, then the various songs and sounds of this game can pretty much blow you away and as for a grade, it’s going to get an 8 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS 9/10

This game can be very addicting but it’s not as fun as the PC version because there’s significantly less stuff to do. You do have multiplayer which is cool but it’s not as big as the one you have on the PC version. First off you need to be connected to PSN, not just the internet so it can really take a long time just to get connected at all and since the game is still quite new and doesn’t have nearly as many players, it could be tough to even find a game that has another person in it. I have never even tried multiplayer once because just getting online is hard enough and in the PC version, being online was half of what made the game fun.

The single player mode still has a lot for you to do and has both survival and creative mode, but unlike the PC version, the maps are relatively small so after a while there won’t really be too much for you to do. Once you have played a single player game and have gone around the map for a few hours it might be best to start a brand new game and relive the adventure over again instead of continuing from where you left off. Creative is still a lot of fun because the size won’t really affect you unless you plan on building a massive city so the game still does have many addictive aspects to it. There’s still more and more being added to the game every now and then but for now this aspect will get an 8 out of 10 for a grade.

STORY N/A

The PC version did have some sort of stories to it, but this one doesn’t really have too much to offer in that sense. You could say that a story would be surviving through the game and progressing your buildings and what you have, which is what the PC version is about, but since the maps are quite small, and there’s less objects and blocks, there isn’t really no point to completing them, and there isn’t even a hardcore mode like the PC version so that takes a lot out of it and as for a story, im going to have to leave this blank.

DEPTH 7/10

The depth for the PC version was as perfect as you can get but this game is nowhere near the amount of depth. Heck, with the new update that comes out today, the game gets more than a dozen new objects, but they are all objects that are from the PC version, not something that’s new, so many many updates would need to be made before this game has as much stuff as the PC version. First off just look at the size of the maps, the PC version has many thousands of blocks in each direction and many thousands more after you reach those while you can probably walk around the entire perimeter of a map in under half an hour in this version, it literally took me less than an hour to fill in the entire map of the game.

You don’t have hardcore mode, you don’t have as many objects, and you have a quite weak multiplayer system. However, that’s only when you compare it to the other version, which already had millions of things to begin with, in general this game really does have a lot to offer, just not in comparision. The game still has hundreds of objects and blocks, and even though the maps are small they generate differently each time you play it and overall there’s still a lot and as for a grade, depth will get a 7 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY 3

This game is pretty easy, when you consider that there’s no hardcore mode, the overall level of the game plummets because everything else is quite simple. First off, the game is only as hard as you make it now because you have creative mode which is only based on how creative you are and you can do whatever you want. In survival mode you can choose to have no troubles at all, very few, or a lot, so it’s all up to you. One huge aspect that I think makes the game a lot easier is the controls. Since you are using an actual controller instead of some buttons and a mouse, I feel that the game flows a lot smoother on this version and is one of the reasons why I like this one so much. When you take into consideration all of those aspects, you realize that the game is really easy and for a grade, this aspect is going to be a 3.

OVERALL 8/10

Overall, the game has a lot less features and items than the PC version but it’s still a lot of fun, and let’s not forget that it’s handheld which means that you can take it wherever you go which is a huge plus. Of course if you don’t have a Vita then there would be no reason to get this game but if you do have one then I would really suggest that you get it, even if you don’t like Minecraft or have never played it because it’s still going to be a great way to waste away many hours and have a good time. This version is pretty cheap, a lot cheaper than the PC version and the game is going to keep getting all sorts of cool updates in the future like the one they put in today which added a lot of stuff, so as long as the price doesn’t go up, you’re going to keep getting more and more. You might as well get one of the texture packs as well which are really cheap and are worth it because they can make your game look so much better and can make everything you build stand out in a way that you want it to. Overall, this game is a blast and even though it’s not as big or cool as the PC version, it still has a lot to offer and is a lot of fun. My overall version for the Vita version of Minecraft is going to be an even 8 out of 10.

100 already? Damn, I have a long way to go

Anyway this is yet another fine review from you. Not only do you give it a lot of details (and don't have endless introductions) but also give ample comparison with the game from other consoles. That's always a point I love.

janus : Thanks. I hadn't actually planned on it, but at like the last minute I wrote an extra review, which was this one. I was going to do 2 reviews yesterday but I made this one too just for the purpse of this one being the 100th, since my 50th also happened to be Minecraft.
