Quite a few years back, I was playing Actraiser at 1:00 AM as I was off work the next day when I smelled something coming from downstairs. So I paused the game as I was in the action part and went downstairs and sure enough, my stepbrother was asleep on the couch with a lit cigarette, and everyone except me was asleep in their respective rooms. I saw the couch smoldering and woke up my stepbrother quickly and calmly went to the rest of the rooms to wake the others and we all got the couch out of the apartment. But if it had not been for me playing Actraiser, my whole family, myself included, would've died. Does anyone else have a story like this to share, or am I the only one?

I've played some games that have greatly influenced my thinking and the outlook on the world, but I've never had a game actually save my life. I may not have had quite an experience like this, but I'm sure plenty have been in an instance in which occupying themselves with something as simple as a video game has spared them of something unfortunate. I'm glad you were able to live and share this experience. The world works in very mysterious ways indeed.

I've never had a video game save my life, or anyone else's life, but I've had video games save me from terrible experiences before. Sometimes I'm playing a game late at night and I hear loud noises that I easily would've woken up to if I went to bed earlier. Waking up to loud sounds is always pretty frightening for me.

Video games have also saved me from a bad mood, or something horrible or wrong I couldn't stop thinking about. Video games really help me get my mind off things and have fun

Nope, I can't think of a single memory where video games have saved my life.. I mean.. Most of the stories listed so far are mainly about video games keeping them awake to realize something is off... So I'm not sure how much credit the video game actually deserves...

The only thing video games do for me is to ignore other people when they're shouting or just to be left alone so I can relax.. I mean Video games have given me a lot of happy memories just nothing to do with saving a life..

Sort of I'd say yeah. I used to be bullied 3-4 years ago and I became really depressed to the point of contemplating suicide, so basically all I did when I got home was play video games, it was like escaping into a world where I didn't have to worry about things. If I didn't have video games I could've become even more heavily depressed, and well in that state I'm not sure what I'd do.

Even now while it's not that extreme, just playing some video games on my Playstation 4 or 3DS can be a way for me to release stress or anger, that's why it's great.

LordGaldan : That's pretty scary. :s

As for me, I don't think so. They've helped me get over past issues that didn't really have a fix though.

Last year and the beginning of last year I was having problems with self harm and wanting to commit suicide as I had just realized that I am not straight and I have homophobic parents. but one day I was looking for my hidden stash of razor blades so I could use them to well you know... and I found a piece of paper that had the password to my email account which I had forgotten the password too. so I went on and the person who was my girlfriend at the time had sent me a email with a link to a game called coming out simulator so I played the game. and if it was not for that game i most likely would have done what I was going to do and let myself bleed to death. but I didn't so in a way a video game did save my life.

I can't recall any game I've played that ended up saving my life. There were a few cases where I was reflecting on them to get over some troubles but nothing that major.

I hope I'm never going to have to rely on a video game to save my life, but you never know.

2013 i was very very very depressed i been struggling since 2012 or so with depression and one day when i was at grandparents house (i liked being there cause i was able to be alone) and my bro left Fallout New Vegas there so i thought id try it and immediately the game sucked me in its world long enough for me to get better and the game gave me happiness. Idk if i would call it lifesaving but it did help during a tough time

I haven't had one directly save my life like your story, but they certainly helped me out in Jr. High when I was the saddest dude around, and they were one of the only few positive things in my life.
