rcarter2 : Off on a tangent, I worked at a place in the 90s that used Susan B Anthony dollar coins in all of the vending machines. That's what the change machine put out when you put a bill in. I think that's what most dollar coins get used for.

Ferdinand : To add to what you said: meaningless debates are usually used by governments to make sneaky moves. For example, the Trade Authority Authorization (the president being able to fast-track free trade agreements) passed during the same-sex marriage/Confederate flag "debate". Let's keep our eyes peeled in THIS debate picks up steam

janus : Precisely. And the current administration, 'the most transparent White house in history', are quite adept at pulling the wool over the eyes of the public and getting them to blame the wrong people for their problems. Nothing ever changes.

I say keep the bills as they are. If America really wants a woman on a monetary thing, put them on coins, since the government is trying to push bigger coins down our throats.

This will be a major change in US currency, well not that major considering there was a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin minted from 1979 to 1981.

Now, if we see Hilary Clinton on US bills on the other hand, that would be a big deal.

I think it's a load of BS. Now before you start screaming "SEXIST" like most people probably already are, hear me out.

First off, I think it's just plain stupid to put someone on currency just because of their gender. If they said they wanted to put Harriet Tubman (for example) on the $10 bill because she risked her life to help slaves escape then I would have no problem with it, but the fact that their only requirement is that the person is a woman doesn't seem right to me. Gender shouldn't be a factor at all, and they are making it one.

Second, it's unfair to whoever they choose to be on the bill. They are basically that the person wasn't good enough to earn a spot on the $10 bill on their own, so they had to eliminate all of the male competition.

To sum it up, I have no problem with a woman being on the $10 bill, but I do have a problem with a woman being on the $10 bill simply because they are a woman, which is clearly the case here as made evident by the fact THAT THEY HAVEN'T EVEN CHOSEN WHO YET.

If you want to hear someone explain it a lot better than I did, watch this really good video I found (that, by the way, was made by a woman): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu87yiDgBDw

Unless this woman has contributed to society, putting her on there is stupid and is just appeal to the feminists that think being equal is females being superior.

rcarter2 :

My point is that women have been in the currency before. Why are people celebrating this as "new"? This doesn't promote women's rights, the whole thing is a publicity stunt. It sickens me.

Txgangsta : Being on currency is not new, but being on significant currency is. As for it sickening you, I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I'm getting the impression that you would see this as a publicity stunt no matter what. Is there a way that a woman could be put on REAL currency without you seeing as a sickening publicity stunt? Regardless, you do realize that many of our country's steps in the right direction start as small publicity stunts? Also, you said this doesn't promote women's rights. That is true. But the point is not to promote rights, it is to promote equality. There is a difference.

Txgangsta : Agreed, it is nothing more than "un show de boucane" as we say in Quebec (smoke and mirrors?) There are better ways to honor historical figures than putting them on Monopoly currency.

Cradily is love : She DID contribute to "original" feminist thoughts (men and women should be equal before the law).

rcarter2 : as a coin collector, I believe that minting a special coin (or even a stamp, as was done with Maya Angelou) would better honor someone's memory than putting their face on regular currency. After a short time people will forget about it.

rcarter2 :

If they really wanted to honor women of the United States, they should make a line of currency specifically dedicated to such a thing. The Sacagewea coin could have continued, and Abigail Adams on the next set, and someone else after that. It's real currency because, just like the rest of the currency, it's a fiat declaration of the American government. People that think of it as you, that it isn't "real" currency will die off and leave it to people that have known the $1 coins their whole life.

janus :

Thanks!

Txgangsta : Sorry, but you are wrong on that last statement. $1 coins are not as convenient as paper $1. You can't comfortably carry near as many $1 coins as you can paper unless you want to ditch wallets for coin purses. I have been to a lot of states, and I pretty much never see that coin used. Heck, it has been years since I have seen one period other than the couple that I have framed with the 50 different state unique quarters. On top of that, there are plenty of kids who don't even know about this coin. I had on more than one occasion had my high school students ask what that coin was when they saw it in my room and where to get one. Ask 100 random people (you can even just ask younger people because you imply they are the ones that view this as serious currency) if they happen to have a $1 coin on them. I can almost guarantee you that not even 10 of those people will just happen to have one that they plan on using to spend. You say we will be left with people who will have remembered the $1 coin their whole lives? How do you imagine that happen when even the majority of younger people don't even use it, and there are plenty of teenagers who have never even seen one? On top of that, you say it is real currenty because it is a government declared fiat. Sure, a technicality. But are you even aware that of the 15 years it has been around, for ELEVEN of those years, they weren't even released for general circulation? I stand by what I said. It is nothing more than a novelty item that you could use as currency IF you chose to. They might as well be those coins with the Twin Towers on them that were sold to remember 9/11. Technically can be used as money, but more of a collecting coin than anything.

But none of that really matters. You are not in a generation that will 'know the $1 coin their whole lives'. You are in a generation where physical money is being used less and less over digital currency. You are a generation that will have known debit/credit cards their whole lives and use THAT as their main source of currency. I wouldn't be surprised that before you are gone, paper and coins might actually be a thing of the past, or at least being officially phased out. So putting a woman on currency NOW is just kind of too late. That is why that though I see it as a good thing, it was something done at a point where it is kind of pointless other than just being a gesture. I good gesture, none the less though. Public relations stunt or not.

Cradily is love : Hence "original" feminists. The new ones basically want to reverse the social order and have women in charge rather than a more-or-less egalitarian structure we have right now.

Sure, it's a good idea.

To be up in arms that they shouldn't be changed is a little ridiculous. I don't think it really matters that much who's on money, but if it makes a great deal of people feel better, and it doesn't have any real negative consequences, then why not?

I don't see anything bad about it. We used to have a 500 peso bill with one man, but now a woman has also been added. No matter what the reason is (gender equality promotion, new news scoops, publicity stunt etc), if it makes many people contented then I don't see why not. No matter what the design is, money is money and I don't see the need to put a face of someone important on a piece of paper that people pass around and fold until it gets dirty and worthless.
