Cyclospora warning: Austin, Texas just had several cases of cyclospora. It happens because of contaminated water or contaminated fruits/vegetables. I'll post two links. One to describe Cyclospora and the other for the Austin breakout.

Haha wow. That's pretty bad. I thought it was a basic instinct to wash your fruits and vegetables maybe not but I was always told to wash mine so I always have. I do hope that the people infected get better though ..

Bintsy : Indeed, it's basic hygiene. In fact, the more of the vegetable/fruit you eat, the more pressing washing should be. It's especially true for what grows in/near dirt like cilantro, muhsrooms or carrots.

However, I do not personally go as far as washing an orange before eating it. That looks... strange

Bintsy : A while back in the news there was this woman my mother knew. She had some kind of OCD, which included washing her oranges before eating them; she ended up killing her children...

But when I saw someone in college (in my class) washing her orange before eating it... I guess some people are just more intolerant to microbes

janus : wat, she killed her children? D: .... and yeah I think some people are just more intolerant. I just haven't ever felt the need to wash my oranges. Though I do feel like I need to wash all my vegetables for instance potatoes is one of the number one things.

That's terrible! I hope those people who got the cyclospora get better. I'm so glad I always wash my vegetables and fruits before I eat them. Everyone should remember to do that.

Whoa. I'll be praying that the people suffering from the breakout will get better and that the cases of cyclospora will die down. My parents have always taught me to wash my grapes and tomatoes before eating them. Now I know that it's really important and to watch out for people who don't. If I see someone not wash their fruits and vegetables before eating them, I'll probably be warning them.

Whilst I may not be from the United States, It is important to press the issue of making sure to wash your fruits and vegetables. After all they are just as capable as having diseases as humans are...

I think another thing to take into consideration is that a lot more chemicals are being used on crops to make sure they grow faster and don't get destroyed and some of those chemicals are very harmful to people .

I just feel with the population growing and the food demands becoming higher that the chances of contamination are higher...

TLR - Don't be lazy wash your veggies and fruit.. Its better than taking a risk.

sonicmcmuffin : In the long run it's also cheaper and more profitable. "organic" food is so expensive because it lets nature "run its course", i.e. lose about half the crops.

janus :  The food is usually lower quality, not fresh and pumped full of all sorts of chemicals to make it bigger and abnormal.. Plus organic is usually better for the environment and less likely to contains surprises such as alive dangerous spiders...

I mean you're reply indicates that if it's more profitable it's better... I'd personally have better quality produce but i guess that's solely opinion based...

sonicmcmuffin : Norman Borlaug, the father of the "green revolution" said that 100 percent organic agriculture could only feed 4 billion people at present yields. TO feed everyone we would literally need to raze so many forests that it wouldn't be worth it.

I'm not saying that organic is bad - I buy some now that I earn more money - but focusing strictly on it would be bad for poorer people who can't afford it. Eating more "regular" vegetables could be enough to fight the negative effects of the chemicals they might contain.
