Hello, and welcome to this month's edition of the VSM. Well, it's that time of the year, the time that the most dedicated and hardcore gamers among us sit glued to their computer chair watching the always eventful E3. Silently we watch as each new IP is unveiled, while blowing up chat boards and forums all across the internet talking about everything we've seen so far in each company's presentation. And it all starts this Tuesday. And for those who are interested you can find multiple broadcasts of it all across the internet, but I suggest checking Twitch who displays it on their home page each year. As an added bonus, Twitch follows the entire three day show, rather than just the first day with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

But on with this year's E3 edition of the VSM, where I'll try to prepare you for what to expect and likely fail miserably at it, but at least no one can say I didn't try. In this edition we'll cover various rumors, reports, and speculations, as well as tossing in a few of my own personal ideas because I'm the author of the article and I can, so why the heck not? But before I jump up on my E3 soapbox, let's get started with the standard content.

Console War Coverage* Time to follow up on the console sales of the past month, and see just who came out on top this round.

NOTE : I have recently discovered some discrepancies in the sales totals listed by my sources. It seems that about a month after posting these numbers in the VSM, they update their statistics showing changes in the totals they had previously reported. These totals vary, but in some cases are upwards of 30,000 - 40,000 sales off. The difference is almost always an update showing more systems were sold than initially reported, however they do sometimes reflect lower numbers than were first thought, albeit the latter is a rare happening. The best I can guess is that these numbers are updated as sales information from different retailers comes in over time. Also it seems the software sales are unaffected by this issue, and most changes in totals are for new-gen/current-gen systems (PS4, XBox One, Wii U, PS Vita).
This brings me to ask a very important question : since console sales are a very large part of the point of the VSM, would the readers prefer that we jumped back one to two months in the next edition of the VSM and post the revised numbers and begin following sales reports that are one to two months old but are more accurate, or would you prefer we continue posting more recent numbers, despite their inaccuracy? Also, as an added benefit, reporting on older numbers would allow for four full weeks worth of statistics once again rather than two to three. If you read this article, please be sure to let me know what your thoughts on this matter are. Thank you.

March 22nd - 28th
PS4 - 310,028 (+2%)
XBox One - 87,006 (-6%)
Wii U - 38,625 (-18%)

PS3 - 40,941 (+10%)
XBox 360 - 21,560 (+10%)
Wii - 1,985 (+8%)

PS Vita - 51,184 (+8%)

The PS4 starts strong in this month's trackings, leading the way with over 224,000 sales more than it's top competitor, while the XBox One drops six percent in week over week sales but still leads the Wii U, more than doubling it in sales.

And in last gen the PS3 leads by roughly 19,000 and enjoys a 10% jump along with the XBox 360 which leads the Wii by just under 20,000.

And then there's the PlayStation Vita: Still going strong in it's sales improvements, gaining 8% this week and moving over 50,000 units.

March 29th - April 4th
PS4 - 249,214 (-20%)
XBox One - 84,798 (-3%)
Wii U - 34,448 (-11%)

PS3 - 37,440 (-9%)
XBox 360 - 22,750 (+6%)
Wii - 1,766 (-11%)

PS Vita - 44,054 (-14%)

This week shows the PS4 leading by over 164,000, while the XBox One leads the Wii U by a more than healthy 50,000+. The Wii U drops another eleven percent this week, resulting in a distant third again.

The PS3 leads last-gen systems, taking first by just under 15,000, and the 360 leads the Wii by nearly 21,000.

The PS Vita drops fourteen percent this week, but still manages to outsell all last-gen consoles and the Wii U.

*Totals do not include used system sales

Software Sales*

March 22nd - 28th
PS4 - 2,121,055 (+14%)
XBox One - 635,959 (-24%)
Wii U - 342,815 (-22%)

PS3 - 1,172,711 (+21%)
XBox 360 - 712,406 (+14)
Wii - 313,694 (+22%)

PS Vita - 476,691 (+113%)

PS4 leads the way in current gen console sales (and all console sales for that matter) this week with over two million games sold, it's top seller being Bloodborne, while the XBox One moves just over 600,000 games, and the Wii U loses a considerable amount of sales moving only 313,000.

Last gen consoles saw the PS3 moving over a million titles while the 360 moved just under 100,000 more than the Wii, despite the Wii enjoying an up week and moving 22% more games than last week.

And with three games in the top twenty for sales total this week --one of which at number five (Sword Art Online: Lost Song), The PS Vita takes a huge jump, more than doubling game sales this week. Two times in a month? Nice work, Vita. Maybe you're finally getting the recognition you deserve.

March 29th - April 4th
PS4 - 1,458,762 (-30%)
XBox One - 550,882 (-13%)
Wii U - 292,468 (-15%)

PS3 - 1,296,781 (+11%)
XBox 360 - 826,301 (+16%)
Wii - 339,757 (+8%)

PS Vita - 401,565 (-16%)

This week the PS4 moves nearly 900,000 more games than it's top competitor, while the XBox One sells nearly 259,000 more games than does the Wii U. Whereas the Wii U is outsold in games by every game console from the both generations as well as the Vita.

The PS3 leads this week in last-gen console game sales by just under 471,000, while the XBox 360 sells over 486,000 more games than does the Wii.

And the PlayStation Vita drops sixteen percent this week in game sales, but that still puts it at nearly one hundred more game sales than it had two weeks ago. All in all, it's another great week for the Vita. This seems to indicate that owners of the Vita are enjoying their system.

Let The E3 Rumors Begin!

It's that time of year again: the time when all dedicated modern gamers get excited and anticipate the premiere game conference that is E3. Each year we go in expecting something big, and most often we walk away surprised by at least a few things. We also tend to start making E3 predictions --which in some cases look more like wishlists -- that in reality we know could never come true, at least not all of them.

And so in keeping of that tradition (can one consider something a tradition if it's only happened once?), this month's VSM will bring in some rumors that I've heard, and even a few of my own. If you've been following these articles since last year's E3 then you might remember that I was awesome enough to incredibly lucky and saw 100% of my personal E3 predictions for Sony fulfilled. However I fully expect to see my luck change this year, so don't expect a repeat.

What others are saying
New Ratchet and Clank game
It's being rumored that a new ratchet and clank game exclusive to the PS4 will be unveiled during Sony's E3 conference.

My opinion I see no evidence or reasoning to support this aside from the film that was mentioned last year. Still not all films spawn games, or vice versa (which is a very good thing. Just ask Ginger), so I don't know how much I buy into this one. It does have some credibility however, and this particular source predicted some things for E3 that actually came to pass about a week ago, so I'll buy in at around halfway.

Likelihood: 40%
I'll give this one a neutral 50% chance. Partly because I have no reason to believe it, and partly because I have no reason to doubt it or the source's prediction abilities...also another small part of me rates it this because I don't really want to say one way or the other on it. Stop looking at me that way, I'm not lazy...often.

New PlayStation shows
This comes from a different source than our last prediction, but it has been said that Sony should and will unveil a new show or two for PlayStation 4 due to the "less than impressive" show Powers.

My opinion I don't doubt that it could happen as Sony is in a position where they're dominating the game portion of the industry as it stands, and almost certainly will continue to regardless of E3 results.

That said, it would be a smart business move to produce more shows if the competition has better programs to offer, as it would move Sony one step closer to making their competition seem irrelevant in consumer eyes. Still, I hope they don't, as E3 should be about games, not shows.

Liklihood: 40%
I really want to put this one at fifty percent as well, but I don't like your judgmental glares, so I'll put the effort in and say I give it a 40% chance since Sony should know better than to try to advertise another show at E3 if the last one wasn't that successful. Especially since few people will base their buy on a show more than they will on a game. Sony is better off revealing this at a different time. Also this came from a source who made some really (since stupid is a mean word) I'll say interesting predictions that will definitely not be correct.

Gran Turismo 7
It's being suggested by multiple sources that GT 7 will be in Sony's showcase, but again this one comes without any backing. However it seems to be a popular prediction for whatever reason.

My opinion
I see no reason to say one way or the other on this one, but since so many people seem to think it fits, maybe they aren't just pulling a random game title out of their hats like it seems to me. Also of note is that one of these sources is the same one that made the predictions I mentioned earlier that were fulfilled early, so I won't be too quick to dismiss it.

Liklihood: 40%
Now this one is a guess by me, as I see no reason to say GT 7 will turn up at E3, but I also see no reason to say that it won't. I just don't feel right buying into what seems to me to be a completely random prediction. Also with the huge fuss over Project CARS releasing in the past month, I don't think now would be the best time to reveal another big name racing title. Especially not the big guns like GT 7. I don't doubt we'll see a racing title, but GT 7 seems like a bad call to me. So take this as a "you might very well see it, but don't hold your breath on it, just to be safe".

Games for Morpheus
Yeah, it's being stated that Sony will unveil games for their VR headset Morpheus. And this isn't just a rumor (so really it doesn't belong here, but it had to be mentioned somewhere), Sony has stated that E3 will probably be the place they unveil their Morpheus games made for "core gamers". That's right, full fledged games, not just the simple ones we've seen so far.

My opinion
While Sony could definitely change their mind on this one I don't see that as being a good idea nor a likely outcome for a few reasons, namely the fact that Morpheus is scheduled for an early 2016 release and they need to sell us on this thing quickly if they want it to succeed.

Also a good reason is that several companies are putting out VR equipment and Sony needs to act fast to give us a reason to buy Morhpeus instead of Oculus Rift or some other piece of VR machinery. Not to mention Microsoft's rumored VR project.

Liklihood: 100%
Yeah, I'm calling this one a sure fire thing, and I don't really have any reservations doing so since Sony has announced they're likely to do so as well. And they're in a spot with this thing; if they don't want to waste years of research and development along with millions of dollars, they need to unveil it and it's games in the next few weeks.

Two new PlayStation models to be unveiled
You read that right, it's been discovered that Sony filed with the FCC for a lighter, less power consuming model of the PS4, as well as a system with 1TB of storage.

My opinion
I called it recently (I believe last month) that Sony would unveil a PS4 slim model, and I still believe that. It's in line with their previous patterns for timing of slim model releases, and it's a good time and way to renew interest in the purchase of a brand spanking new PS4. This is actually what many gamers have been waiting for, as it will likely be accompanied by a price reduction on the standard PS4.

As for the 1TB PS4, I don't doubt that one either. Since this has been filed for a while now it stands to reason that they were waiting until E3 to reveal it. Also it appears that Microsoft's 1TB XBox One was unveiled early by mistake on Amazon's part and they too were saving it for E3, however it could be that MS was shooting for a preemptive strike and attempting to nab some additional sales by unveiling two weeks before they knew Sony would. Probably a smart move if so.

Liklihood: 75%
I'm very confident that one of these two things will happen, and fairly confident that both will happen, however it would be an unexpected move for two models to be unveiled at the same time, so the 1TB model may slide until a later date. But even so, it would be unwise of Sony not to show it since Microsoft has done so with their 1TB system, and they don't need to let MS get the upper hand on them in any way.

Eirinn's predictions
Yes, it's the moment you've all been waiting for (and by "You've all been waiting for", I obviously mean "I've been waiting for"): My chance to get up on my E3 predictions soapbox (the soap is detergent free so it's sensitive skin friendly). Now let's see if I can even come close to one 100% accuracy this year. Not likely.

PS4 price reduction
First off I've mentioned this before, I know, but it bears repeating. Sony won't let themselves be outdone price wise by the XBox One, especially not after their boasting about the difference in price tags at the PS4's launch.

That said, Sony will almost definitely be unveiling at least one new PS4 model at E3, and with the XBox One's 1TB model retailing at $400, Sony can't afford to price their 1TB model in the $430-$450 range, and they certainly shouldn't sell it at the same price as the 500GB model, so a price reduction on the lesser of the two is only natural unless they shock us all by maintaining the current PS4 price and discontinuing the 500GB model. That would be a huge win for them, but highly unlikely, and who could blame them for not doing so?

On the other hand, the PS4 slim could be revealed instead (if not in conjunction with the 1TB model), and this would also almost necessitate a price reduction on the 500GB full sized model.

So regardless of which model they unveil --or even if they unveil both-- the first generation PS4 will be receiving a price reduction, most likely effective as of day 0 (the first day) of E3. This would be a flashy move, and one that's very much like the PlayStation team.

Morpheus launch date announced
This one is a bit shakier than my last prediction, and one that I won't exactly be shocked to see fail, but what's the fun in playing it safe all of the time with predictions?

With Oculus Rift and all of Sony's other VR competition taking off, along with Microsoft VR rumors, Sony needs to nail down a release date for Morpheus, and I expect they will do so. Now this "date" may simply be "Spring 2016" or the like, but it will be there.

No less than four first party titles
Some may see this as dreaming, and some may see it as underestimating, but there's a ton of dread floating around the PlayStation community that Sony will be too focused on third party IP to unveil any first party IP at E3. Now this isn't to say that they won't be making first party IP, but that they won't be showcasing it much.

I however have two things to say to this.

First off: why the dread? Sure Sony's first party games make for some of the best games out there, but as long as they keep releasing them why does it matter if they show more third party stuff? At this point it won't hurt their sales much --if any. I get all of the arguments that they need to one up Microsoft in the first party IP content shown, but in the end, will it really matter so long as they show good games? I don't think so personally.

Next up, why I disagree: Sony knows what their fans want most often this generation, as they keep in touch with the community fairly well. But even that isn't why I say they'll showcase a few first party games, my reasoning is much more logical than trusting any company to care about what I want over what might make them the most money. That would be bad business. No, instead I feel that Sony will want to hype up enough first party titles and list them for sometime between October and December release dates to ensure plenty of first party software sales during the Christmas rush. Face it, they're leading the industry right now, and they didn't get in that position due to dumb business moves. These guys know what they're doing; they know how to make money, and they're going to act like it.

1TB PS4 announced
So I addressed this in my comments on other people's predictions, but I lumped it together with the PS4 Slim model prediction. For clarity reasons, I'd like to address the 1TB model separately. Normally I wouldn't make a fuss over this new model, but with Microsoft's new 1TB model already getting attention, Sony needs to respond soon to steal that spotlight (not that it's hurting their sales currently, but it's still smart). As such, I fully expect to see them at the very least mention it in passing. E3 is where everyone turns for updates on this sort of info, and Sony would do well to use this platform as a way to garner more attention than they will with an announcement at a later date. Besides, you shouldn't expect Microsoft to pass over the mention of their new 1TB model and new controller.

PS4 Slim model announced
Because why not? Sony is due for a Slim announcement, and since they've filed with the FCC for what looks to be just that, it wouldn't make sense to pass up the world's biggest stage for gaming and not say anything about it.

That'll do for now I don't know that there's anything else that I could feel comfortable predicting, but I do think we'll see some new service from them, or an update to an existing one. Still, I'm all predicted out, so I'll move on now. However, I would certainly be interested in hearing your E3 predictions for Sony if you have any, or your thoughts on my predictions. Do I have uncanny insight, or am I out of my gourd for making half of these predictions? Probably the latter.

Another Article, Another Signoff

Well that does it for this month's edition of the VSM. My apologies for yet another late edition as well as the lack of subarticles here, but the predictions took up a lot of space and I don't want to drag this thing on any more than I already do. So with that, I'll see you next month when we'll have the following features:

-Upcoming games -Console War coverage
-A look back at E3 -An edition of the VSM that gets posted on time
-And more!

Until next time, keep on gaming, and keep it Sony.

Well, RIDE actually got my interest. So far, I think that only the official games for MotoGP where the only racing games that focused exclusively on motorcycle racing, so seeing a new game that takes the racing out of the official competition is very welcome.

Gran Turismo 7? Nope, too soon yet. They are still like half into the Vision Gran Turismo project, and I don't think they will release the next GT before that project is over. I would really like to see a new Gran Turismo, GT6 is now currently the biggest link I have with my PS3 and a new release would erase any doubts I have about acquiring a PS4 by getting rid of my PS3.

I'm really looking forward to the July edition. Tomorrow stars the new Need for Speed trailer, and I can't wait for it to be announced. It will also be nice to hear if anything about Tekken 7 is unveiled, even if it's only a release date.

EX Palen : Thanks for checking out the article again.

As for the games, I actually liked RIDE a lot as well. I don't typically enjoy racing games but this one piqued my interest for it's focus on motorcycles, which for some reason are more fun for me despite not being into motorcycles in real life. I don't know why. lol

In fact, RIDE is the most interesting game on this list to me. However there is at least one game that had a June release date that I didn't get to on this list. It's called Wander. Here's a link to the PlayStation Blog page on it: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/05/28/wander-coming-to-ps4-on-june-4th/

That one really intrigues me despite being an MMO, because a dev team member and I actually discussed making a game that shared a similar concept, but I didn't think anyone would be interested in it, no matter how fun it sounded to me. I'll definitely look into it as well as RIDE.

And I'm really looking forward to E3. I can't wait to see what Sony unveils this year. Hopefully we'll get a diverse genre selection like last time.

Also, I think I'm going to go back a month or two on sales reports for the sake of being more accurate as 30,000 sales is a lot to be off by. What do you think?

I'm in for the revised numbers. If they are more accurate and cover more weeks, it all contributes to make the article more complete.

Woah, that Wander game. I had to imagine what the title meant, but this... Exploring the air, the terrain and the seas by controlling different kinds of creatures. Seems to be a very vast game, as in-game characters can speak different languages and thus communication is harder than in your average MMO. Too bad it still has no release date in Europe, though, I would like to try it out.
