Hey all,

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is regarding the obscene rarity of some of the Amiibo figures that Nintendo is producing (or WAS producing since obviously there's barely any inventory). Personally, I think they're nice figures for the MSRP value and was interested in getting a Fire Emblem one (let's face it, I could go crazy and 'collect' but that'd just be too expensive). Unfortunately even while constantly refreshing the page on Amazon, one comment claims the amiibos for Robin/Lucina sold out in mere seconds! And it seems like the majority of purchases were from people looking to resell them for outrageous prices.

So what do you think about all this? Are amiibos worth it? Should more inventory be available to counter reselling, or do you agree with Nintendo's supposed approach for rarity? At least I read that that was their goal. Has anyone heard differently?

Amiibos aren't worth anything but entertainment. I love collecting amiibos and looking at them, but personally, I see amiibos as gimmicks from Nintendo to get extra cash from its customers. But of all the gimmicks, IT WAS DEFINITELY AN INGENIOUS ONE. But I need to get to a topic.
Scalpers. Everybody hates them. They buy large quantities of amiibos for the sake of making them go rare and sell them for sky-high prices. Rare amiibos normally cost more than they should, that's why you see those Fire Emblem amiibos so expensive. Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to the Nintendo graveyard to mourn about the Wii Fit Trainer, Marth, and Villager amiibos.

Yeahhhh at this rate, unless you want a common one like Mario or Bowser, I don't think they're worth the high amount of money you have to pay money for pretty much any other one.
Honestly, I just think making this kind of thing that is clearly popular so rare is dumb (Though idiotic spoilsport resellers don't help at all, and I'm not exactly a businessperson). I would absolutely love it if Nintendo would make more.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm just going to hope I find a Kirby amiibo someday...

I have a pretty big Amiibo collection. But honestly, they aren't worth as much hassle as you've heard. I mean, the figurines are really cool! But all the scalpers have ruined the experience for everyone. I mean, sure, Nintendo is rolling in the money like Wario. But the whole making every single one rarer than a copy of Super Princess Peach thing is kind of ridiculous.

They are fun if you like to collect, but it'll be pricey. I just wish there was more you could do with them.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

It's really hard to collect anything these days. Resellers and the internet really ruins it all. Makes it impossible to get what you want. SO I just don't do it anymore.

Jordanv78 :
SuperMariofan908 : You 2 make a really good point with re-sellers. I think the reason why Nintendo has a hard time selling Amiibos is because you got people keep buying them in bulk like buying 20, 30, 40 of them and sell them on eBay to make a quick buck because they make them rare.

Personally to me, I currently have a Charizard Amiibo and planning to get a Greninja and a Lucario Amiibo sometime in the future, and after I collected all 3, I'm good.

Although when I go to the store such as Walmart, all I mostly see are the more well known characters. The thing is that Nintendo makes a lot of the most common characters (such as Mario, Link, and Pikachu) and think the others are not as popular (such as Charizard, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer), scalpers sees this as an opportunity to make them more rarer by buying a bunch of them.

What I learn in Economics in high school, if you have a shortage on an item, you always expect to see prices skyrocket, and with those Amiibos, you see more of the rarer ones get more pricier than the common ones because Nintendo is loosing a lot of their inventory due to the scalpers buying them in bulk just to resell them at a higher price. There is more demand over supply and that creates a shortage, and that's why the prices for Amiibo are around $40-$50 when they started around $15-$20 when Wave 1 was released.

So, for me, I just buy one just for collection, I don't waste my time and money to buy 50 of them and resell 49 of them on eBay. I mostly want 3 Amiibos and that's it

IgorBird122 : Yeah the supply definitely should be increased to counter the rarity of some of these figures, in my opinion. I read an article once where Nintendo claimed their goal WAS to make some more rare than others and have the common ones always available. That's understandable and all, but why not have at least one representative figure from each franchise? The rarity of the Fire Emblem characters is incredible. Especially with Amiibo support being a selling point of Codename: S.T.E.A.M. It's essentially impossible to actually utilize that funciton of the game. I only hope that if the new Fire Emblem for the 3DS has Amiibo support that they would re-release some of the figures. Or maybe make a Chrom one or something.

You have to figure that in order to make something collectible in the first place, that they would limit the supply of some of them.

Really, unless they produced just an INSANE amount of them, the re-sellers would still be a problem. Always will be.

It's just like anything else. When something popular comes out, re-sellers buy it up like crazy and sell it on the internet. Doesn't really matter what the product is.

Apple Products, Sneakers, Video Games, Other Collectibles...it's really hard to get anything like that these days unless you pre-order EVERYTHING.

Jordanv78 : That is true, that is why you see a lot of brand new NES, SNES, & N64 games going for $1,000. So, a lot of scalpers sees this as an opportunity to gain big bucks either when they get them or in 10, 25, 50+ years.

IgorBird122 : That's just it. The thing that is the most upsetting about all this is that these things disappear completely the second they hit the shelves. Re-sellers are supposed to be for obsolete things. Guess I'm just baffled at how these things are essentially obsolete the moment they are released. A 30 year old video game that's not made anymore? Yeah, could be rare. Might go for higher than what its retail price is. A figure that was just released for $13? Why do I want to pay $50 for it next day?

Although if re-sellers were to wait till the commotion dies down and we're able to truly see what is and isn't rare, then nobody may care to even buy them.

Also, just acquired a couple rare ones myself. So.. to the bandwagon! (mainly looking to trade for the fire emblem ones, but will sell if I can't)

I don't buy them to collect, I buy them to play with my in super smash bros.

I'm not much of a collector, I didn't even collect pokemon cards that much. These are cool though, because you can actually use them in game. I don't think it's worth spending huge amounts of money for them though.

Never saw the point of them when they were introduced still don't see it now. I wouldn't go collecting them due to the prices but since very few people buy them over here I could easily get a good few of them if I saved up. I heard it is very hard to get a number of them too so why bother.

I honestly don't see the point in buying an amiibo. They don't have enough features within games for me to want to buy them. It's not like you can actually use your amiibo fighter in Smash Bros, so I just don't see the point in buying them. I won't even think about buying one any time soon.

To me and I'm sure many, Amiibos are just a gimmick. A cute gimmick, but a gimmick nevertheless. You don't get much out of them besides slight additions in-game and perhaps slight bragging rights. It's a nifty little system, sure, but it'll likely just pass by as a footnote in Nintendo history.

When I first saw Amiibo I instantly wanted to buy them. I wanted Kirby, Pikachu and Yoshi. So I brought them and eventually wanted to buy more of them. Soon after, I found myself wanting to collect them all to display them in my room and even in our living room.

Sadly, that is a hard to achieve. Nintendo didn't distribute enough in the US so from the start it has been hard to find/buy certain Amiibo.

* cough * Robin * cough * JigglyPuff * cough *

The only Amiibo's that are easy to get are the common ones like Mario and Link. But you already knew that. It's just very frustrating, it doesn't have to be this way. Why Nintendo ? Why !?

Are they worth to buy ? That depends, Amiibo is just a new money maker that Nintendo has come up with, a pretty good one too. You can either buy to use them in game or buy to collect, the figurines are made with good to decent quality. Toon Link, Megaman, Charizard and kirby being great examples. It sucks how you would most likely have to go out of your way just to have one, thanks a lot scalpers.

I think they are not worth it to buy when the prices for them are outrageous. I mean $80 for Little Mac ? Come on. I might as well buy the Japanese version of him for $23 ( if there are any left still ). Thank you Nintendo for not region blocking these little guys * thumbs up *.
I enjoy collecting Amiibo's but I'd feel that one of these days I might just end up giving up collecting them again ( Yes, I did before). I could always wait until the cards come out.... god knows how long that would be.

I don't know if it is worth the investment. My first impression of the amiibos was that they aren't worth the money, and they'll more than likely sell out in the stores quickly. After a few months, I finally bought a mario amiibo just to try it out for myself. It didn't take very long to level it up (I did it in one night) and they pick up on your play style fairly quickly.

It wasn't until later that I found out that they actually read your control imputs and act accordingly nearly every time. This would explain why my mario amiibo manages to perfect shield all of my attacks before I even make them. This was somewhat disappointing to find out even though I suspected it all along.

Altogether, I think they are okay for collecting, but at the same time collecting them is a difficult task because the rare ones like the Lucina and Robin you mentioned sell for outrageous prices, and some amiibos are store exclusive. The only amiibos I ever seem to find are a million mario ones, as well as bowser and peach. Even link is scarce in the stores I've checked.  The amiibos are just a gimmick that Nintendo is using to make easy money, I don't think it's worth it for the outrageous prices some of them go for. I might actually consider getting robin or link or maybe one other amiibo for one of my main characters, but other than that, I'm not going to waste money attempting to collecting them all.

I don't really know why people are going crazy about these, especially because of the price. Of course, I can't actually use any of them so I don't think I can feel the same way but it just seems way too expensive to really be worth it.

This is an opinion from someone who doesn't own a Wii-U.

I find it a great idea from Nintendo to get extra content instead of downloading stuff. Downloading DLC stuff doesn't work for me so I really like the Amiibo idea. However I find them a little on the expensive side for just one Amiibo. But if I have a Wii-U I think I would buy at least one Amiibo but not getting crazy and collect all of them.

It might be a way to get easy money but it isn't a wrong idea for collectors and many people like them.

zanderlex : I don't know why people are so addicted to these. But like I said, after I get my 3 Amiibos, I'm good

I have the Charizard Amiibo and all I need to get is the Lucario Amiibo and the Greninja Amiibo, and I got what I needed. Now basically the only way I would get them (like I did with the Charizard one) is to order it online, and both Lucario and Greninja are both Toys "R" Us exclusive Amiibos and there isn't a Toys "R" Us near where I live, so eBay is the only option left.

As of right now, I have still not opened the Charizard amiibo box and I'm planning not to because having things in it's original package because it will be valued more than when it's opened. I'm planning on doing the same for the other 2 I'll order later.

I might also buy me a more common one (either Mario or Link) to see what it does.
