Hi so I have a six year old sister that kinda likes Pokemon. She just watches the show. She watches it every once in a while. She also sometimes watches me play Pokemon. I want to teach her the basics of how to play the Pokemon video games but I don't really know where to start. Could someone please help me with it.  She knows how to read and do basic math so she shouldn't have any problems with that.

mariomario8899 : Not much I can say here. Maybe you should wait till your sister is 10 years or older. I was 12 when I first got into the franchise.

I first started Pokemon at around her age. Pokemon runs a system that requires some strategy but can be known if explained correctly.  My sister had to help me out a bit on my start of Pokemon.

Tips and advice:

• Pokemon is based on the monsters that it has to offer. It is important for her to be familiar with the Pokemon game she plays. Do not cram all of the Pokemon because that is so much to know and remember all at once (unless she is secretly not human). That's the beauty on what the routes are for; the introduction of Pokemon one at a time. When she goes to explore to see Pokemon, she can see some of the Pokemons' names and slowly remember them. It will take time for her to remember so don't be frustrated if she recalls a Pokemon wrong based on their name and appearance.
• Pokemon has to start somewhere which is in a game. Pick a Pokemon game that you think would be easy for her to start with and what you can help her out with a lot. For example: if I don't know the 6th generation, it is obvious that I don't use Pokemon X/Y since I don't know the Pokemon and information in its game and you can't help anyone else who may struggle in it.
  
• When it comes to battles, inform her slowly on the type advantages and disadvantages then build your way up. For example: the water, grass, and fire triangle comes first and then slowly inform her on the others as she progresses through a Pokemon game. Luckily each game starts off slow with this type system to help people who are new to Pokemon.
• If she can read and comprehend, it would help her advance through the storyline much easier since Pokemon is about that too.

 

I taught my cousin to play some pokemon by using the colors of the types and moves' backgrounds. FE, black attacks (dark attacks) are good against pink (psychic types). I would ask her if she knew what color the pokemon she was facing was, and corrected her if she was wrong. I also asked her if she knew what attack colors were good against the color she was facing, and corrected her is she was wrong.

Dual typings were a bit difficult but she eventually got the hang of it after we made a big word document that goes over every color combination's weaknesses. 

I don't know how you should teach her Pokémon, but I do have a little advice. My first Pokémon game was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. These mystery dungeon games don't have battle scene battling, but the story line is awesome. At least this was the case with this game. As long as she can read, it is a great game to play. 

The first thing I'd teach your sister if I was in your shoes would be the different pokemon types and how they stack up in each other. First you should start with the easier ones to remember such as water beats fire, fire beats grass, and grass beats water. Once she's gotten a grasp of how each type stacks against each other, then you can move on to what moves would work well against pokemon with multiple types. this will make playing pokemon much easier.

I'd say the best thing to do would be set her up with a vizzed account and have her start playing a first gen game such as  red or blue, i'd avoid yellow since all you can do is pick pikachu. However second gen games such as gold, silver and crystal have better graphics which may be more fun for her. I just don't think the second gen games explain 2 the player how to play the game as well as the first gen games. If you want you can have her watch the very first episodes of pokemon, the ones that we grew up with. I know a website that has them. Make sure you have firefox and a extension called strict popup blocker on firefox or else the popups are really bad. Any way here is the website.

The very first episodes of pokemon will help her learn the type advantages better than you just explaining it 2 her, plus it will be fun for her 2 watch. 

I read the entire national pokedex to my brother. To my surprise, he got every word. 

But that's a boy. A girl might be different. My first PKMN game was Ruby. I loved playing that, even though I didn't know how to read yet. I was only 4. But my dad erased his data and let me pick a starter. Torchic. I just pressed buttons and moved around, just messed around until I learned to read and I taught myself Pokemon from there. 

Apart from that, just let her be herself. Let her get the hang of it a bit first, and then she'll grasp on tight.
