In my view, video games are an art form. They can play with emotion, and present a message just as powerfull if not more so than other things traditionally considered art, such as music, painting, or movies.

Why is it that the older generation refuses to accept this?
The most common oppinion I have heard is that video games are evil, and should not be played. This is often spoken in the same manner in which they taboo heavy metal as evil, and demonic, without having listened to the songs, or even read the lyrics.

Thats my oppinion, I would love it if the community would discuss it.

The older generation refuses this because many of them hate the newer ones, hell even I hate the newer ones. It's just gone into everyone cocksucking MW2 and making Guitar Hero sound like it's still innovative.

I agree, games are considered good because they are part of a series, best example, Halo 3 ODST, it was a fun lil' shooter, but look at one word ' lil' ' It's a very short, small game of little over 4 hours of gameplay, yet people give it 8's, 9's, and at one place I even saw a 10, the game is fun, but way to short to be really enjoyable.

Originality doesn't really excist in videogames anymore, not until someone invents a whole new form of video-gaming, I mean, Nintendo tries to be innovative, and is pretty succesful at that, but overal, videogames aren't that special anymore, some are good some are bad, but Original, not really.

Every generation has to suffer this type of nonsense if they have / develop something the older generation didn't have.
It happened with rock and roll, cars, indoor plumbing, everyday people owning land, so on backwards through time.
All of those things were considered "evil" by the past generations that didn't understand them, but look at the way things are now.
Would you consider indoor plumbing "evil"? No you wouldn't, because it has been around since you were born.
It's because the human mind is often trained to be closed minded so anything differing from the way that things were "when I was a lad" type of thing is wrong.

The people saying that are hypocrites, most likely religious nuts when they call heavy metal "evil" when they themselves are the ones that are evil because they are promoting hate for something they do not understand.

There are far more satanic things that those hypocrites use on a daily bases such as the money they own and the flags they got hanging around them all of them have pentagrams on it. They need to wake up to reality.

Anyone who doesn't believe gaming is art is a nut. Video games contain music, graphics, and story telling... all of those are art.

Another thing about the old generation, they live in a wack period where there was no internet so their minds were caged in one way views on the world. Now that we have internet you can see a major difference in opinions and the objection rate is probably higher now that people can do their own research and draw their own conclusions without someone else telling them what to think.

The older generation didnt grow up with stuff we did, im sure if they did they wouldnt dislike the modern society we have today in ways of video games, music and stuff.

DarkHyren is right... well, half right. The other half is parents trying to place blame on someone else for children misbehaving.

I don't see video games as evil. Some people may not like them but they shouldn't be forcing their opinion on everyone. They need to explain why they feel that way & then let people decide for themselves.

That's very stereotyping and insulting.

Actually one thing I have to complain about is that a lot of Christian game developers and reviewers are total idiots. For some reason there has been maybe one Christian video game to my knowledge that has contained actual violence; everyone else in that particular industry avoids it like the plague, and Christian reviewers dock points off of even games where it makes logical sense to be violent.
Christians complained about Doom for having "demonic elements," completely missing that the demons are the BAD GUYS. The ironic thing is that the bad guys often turn out to be demons in Christian work, INCLUDING THE BIBLE.

But a common complaint about video games is that they contain violence, sex, alcoholism, etc., which a lot of other genres have. However, they allow people to interact with such a world, which they think trains kids to perform violent actions and take alcohol and have sex with prostitutes. It makes logical sense, but it's total bull because you can avoid all of that via the same process as ensuring movies, music, and books (yes, books corrupt. Popular culture doesn't seem to think so, however, as I've never seen an MPAA rating on a piece of literature) don't corrupt their child: DON'T LET THEM LOOK AT IT IF YOU DON'T FEEL IT'S APPROPRIATE.

Same story with the Internet, too, which pretty much confirms that it's a generational thing. Which is interesting, because last I checked my grandfather actually plays a lot of computer games.

ABout the older generation....they usually critisize forgetting they WE...were raised by them....Ok if Zelda is evil then i'm King James the third...mario may be a stereotypical wonder but hes not evil, only games that push the boundries and games like manhunt, and bioshock, but even then its still make believe, like peter griffin said, maybe you shouldnt blame the influences but yourself, you dont have to watch it, you dont have to play it...dont blame visual stimulants when its the human brain that decides whats real or effin fantasy...now if they make a game called...detriot rapist...now thats when people should be concerned...ive seen worse s*** on the news in the past month so why must people insist its what the children are watching thats causing problems...i do believe if your the parent you should be in controll dont like what you kid plays?...then monitor you childrens intake of "violence"
