Its sanic the hoghedge and  its his very first game all the way back on the Sega Genesis, so we all know modern day sonic games are ehh (well depending on if you think sonic 06 is a good game or not.) And we all know that every gamer is always talking about who is better is it Mario is it Sonic NO ITS ALEX KIDD then there is a awkward silence and that person is quietly walked out of the room, but I shall keep all my bias at the door the awkward person just walked out of.  but what about the pre jump into 3d you know the good old timely 2d games you don't know what I'm talking bout (that awkward young person again -,,-), well guess wheat's its time to find out.

Its time to find out if all that blast processing really means anything for this games Graphics (no it doesn't) if there is one thing I can say about the graphics is that they are really good everything is nice and bright and colorful that's for sure. Be it the grassy green um well grass of the green hill zone or all the brown rocks and blocks that is in Labyrinth zone every zone in the game has its own kind of new design and color that isn't in the last zone. I also think how good the game looks give it a good sense of speed (and that's the point of this game series) which everything so smooth and so 'natural' it makes it seem like you are rolling around at the speed of sound. The character and enemy designs also look really good which is great because well it is, Sonic is blue (derrrrrrrrrrrrr) and a bit pudgy (so how does he move so fast then?)  Sonic is also well designed in terms of animation Sonic himself is very smooth he goes from his normal 'running' animation to his running animations very smoothly so you can really feel like he is really getting faster which helps you get into the game he also have a nice jump (said no one ever to anyone in real life.) Which might just be me but its looks a bit floaty it doesn't feel floating but it looks it (that probably only made sense in my head) the enemies look like they where made for the areas that they are in (except for the bats with the motor for a butt.............) but I kind of wish they did more I mean most of them only have one attack and just either off screen and never come back or just walk around and be boring oh well. Just because you are the fastest animal in all the humanoid family doesn't mean you cant look good and Sonic sure proves that with a 8 out of 10 in the Graphics.

Just because you are going faster then Sound doesn't mean you cant have some jamming music to go along with it and would you believe that the music is awesome because well guess it is sooooooooo good. I will state now that I think (in my opinion) that Sonic games can (when done right) some of the best video game music evah and when not done right its just meh. But you know sense its the first game in the series it has to have awesome music because................. law of averages? But anyways the music has that sort of energetic kind of feel to it that makes you want to go fast (gotta go fast, gotta fast, gotta go faster, faster, faster, faster..............) one of the easiest examples of what I mean is Green Hill Zone if you never heard this track then what is wrong with you?! Not only is it how you show how good your soundtrack with something like that but it also says: Hey your going to have fun so why not have fun going fast with some great music? Which this game does really good and also the tracks all match the areas too except more Marble Zone they should have just looped the evil laugh over and over from the American version of Sonic CD, no but I think that Marble Zone is one of my favorite tracks in the game. And yes the sound effects all sound great (cept of sonic getting a bubble underwater I know they where trying to make it sound like he was gulping it but it sounds just a bit to high pitched to me) be it the sound of sonic turning around with that skidding sound effect to the classic sound effect of getting to the goal post. If you heard the sound effects on there own you might question just what half of these are used for but then you play the game and just forget about that question because everything just somehow matches the game even that trippy sound effect you hear when you go into a special stage (ALIENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) So weather you think the sonic games soundtracks are terrible or just awesome we can all agree that some of the music and sounds are classic (at least in this game) so the Sound gets a GREAT 10 out of 10

The addictiveness of Sonic the Hedgehog is really dependent on if you like to do fast paced platforming or not, if you do then you will like the game if you don't and want to do something a bit slower then go play Super Mario Bros (no insult because I know someone out there will take it as one.) If you are ready for high speed antic's (except for Marble zone...........) then have lot of fun with this game and you never know this might be a game you replay every now and then rather then pick it up, beat it, put back down kind of game. You might also like this game if you like to collect stuff but are not a collect-a-thon kind of person as there are Chaos Emeralds in the game so you could go out of your way to get them, don't worry there aren't too many only 6 (maybe they should make more of them..........) so its not like it would take 385 days/2 to get all of them. You may even like this game if you re someone who are in to playing just short games because well this game is not to long at all (which may turn some people off really.) And of course you would really like this game if you are a big fan of platformer games because well guess what it is a platformer game. And you might also like this game if you liked Super Mario Bros (I know its a taboo thing to like both right) its really similar in terms of gameplay Sonic's just faster and cant shoot thing with fire underwater (or breath for too long in it either) the most obvious difference is that Sonic is animal so if you liked being a human then well nothings really changed. So if you like any of the things above or just want to play a sonic? platformer for the first time then this would be a great game to play and ill give the Addictiveness of the game a 6 out of 10.

You know it seems like old video games didn't really have that much in terms of story (great big gasp) and this game (and the series really, well most time) are the exact same way. So what is the story you might ask well here it is: A hedgehog named sonic is trying to stop a evil fat man named Doctor Robotnik from turning all the animals that he has into robots and also to get some chaos emerald's. But hey that last part doesn't really mean anything because all it does is change the ending (so it does mean something then,) but rather then that the storyline is really bare boned. I also cant really say anything about any of the characters as we really don't know anything about any of them at this point which is odd because there is really only two people Sonic and Robotnik, what is Robotnik using the animals for, why is he doing it, WHO is he? And same could be said for Sonic I guess you could say he is just trying to help his friends but maybe he is just hateful to fat men with moustaches (wait a minute................) and how is Sonic, Sonic how come he can run so fast or have a frame of a human? We don't get any answers and well............ I really could careless to be honest because it doesn't seem like most of these questions will ever be answered, and that is a bit of a shame but nothing ill lose any sleep over. So the Story is really not that important at all in anyway but it still tries a bit to have a story which is promising and its gets a not so promising score of 2 out of 10.

Because Sonic the Hedgehog is a liner platformer that makes you go through scripted stages there really inst that much Depth to the game. But that doesn't mean it has none what so ever but what it does offer is fun game which is all that it really needs to offer but it also has special stages in each level (minus the third stage of each zone) which in those special stages are the Chaos Emerald's that you can collect to get the good ending. But lets get back to the Zones there are 6 zones with each of them having 3 acts in each of them so in total there are 19 levels total, at the end of each third act there is a boss fight with Robotnik and each fight isn't hard so its not like your going to die 7 times during each fight. And the game in a whole can be a short depending on how fast and good you are at platforming so if your really good it will be a breeze to beat if not then well its still not going to be a long game. And sense you can only play as Sonic there is no mutiplayer mode so your kind of alone for this game, how sad right? So in reality there really isn't too much to do in this game rather then go fast, listen to the soundtrack and have fun which is kind of average but hey its fun (like I've stated a lot so far) so ill give the Depth a 5 out of 10.

Now what is the Difficulty of this game well the game isn't really that hard nor is it that easy like I stated before its really how good you are at platforming and knowing where the enemies are at. Some of the most hardest points of the game is: Labyrinth zone just because part of the zone is underwater so if you hear the drowning theme and your not close to the surface then you gonna be DEAD! And then there is the special stages when can sometimes be a pain just to get there, to do it you need to grab 50 rings and get to the end of the stage without losing any of them and then jump into a ring after you get to the goal post. Once you get into the stage you have to get to the Emerald which is surrounded by theses weird gem things which can take a away to make them go away, and the stage moves around all the time, AND there is a goal which is where you do not want to go or else you wont get the Chaos Emerald. So the game really isn't hard at all and even if you are not someone who doesn't like to play platformers you still wont have a too hard of a time trying to beat the game, o ill give the Difficulty of Sonic the Hedgehog a 4 out of 10.

Wow has it really been 23 years sense Sonic the Hedgehog came out, well then the game might be really old but that doesn't stop the game from bring really fun. And it also doesn't stop this game from being re released a bazillion times like it has now a days so even if you think you don't you have a way to play the game, YOU DO heck they even sell this game on toilet paper. But I'm not going to lie I really like this game and the game series that it has spawned over the year (even if some of the games wasn't fun) So weather you are a new Sonic fan or a old one, or not even a Sonic fan at all you should at least play the original once in a while because I give it a 9 out of 10.

Man, you really HATE Marble Zone

Your review overall is good as you tried to immerse yourself in the time it was created to have a more objective look. Unfortunately (blame my linguistics education), I thought your sentences were a little weak. By that I mean you used to many sentence-fillers like the first sentence about graphics. You could have simply said "The graphics are really good, everything is nice..." (don't forget the punctuation!) and you wouldn't have lost an ounce of content.

Nevertheless your review is worthy of a 4 since you still provided many details to give a good idea of what the game is about.

janus : I try to keep my reviews like Big Macs filled with a lot of useless extra stuff :/ 

ThanatosUnraveld : But there's a way to make that useless stuff more tasty. Try to read your sentences and wonder if they make sense. I often have to rewrite whole sentences (for reviews or op-eds I write) because even I can't quite understand the wording. Being long doesn't mean stuffing.

ThanatosUnraveld: Not necessarily. My review of Tetris was less than 800 words but there wasn't much to be said about the game. The graphics were primitive and there were only 3 tracks. I think it's better to be short and sweet than, er, long and sour. Granted, you do need to give in details to show what the game is about, but don't do like I did and spend over half the review making a walkthrough of the game.

Thanatos - Oh man, I have to say I LOVE your review style. You keep me laughing with the jokes you sneak in (and sometimes aren't ao sneaky with), and to me a humorous review is the best kind. It helps keep the readers attention better through all of the plain text, especially since images and text altering effects aren't allowed. Also you just make it feel like you're having fun with the reviews, which I think makes them much more enjoyable.

However there are a few spots in the review where you seemed to go in a circle and repeat yourself, and I do agree with janus in part when he says that you might want to tighten your sentence structure a little. In fact, if I may contradict most others in the review forum, allow me to say this: remember that less is more when it comes to words. If you can mention everything that it makes sense to mention and add a dash of humor here and there all in less than 1,500 words, do that instead of shooting for 2,000 words. The more words you use to describe the game, the less each paragraph captivates the reader. It's a difficult balance to strike, but the best reviewers must strive to get said balance right. Trust me, it's worth the effort.

If you could fix those problems and proof read, you would stand a chance at becoming one of the best around here, and you already have my eye for one of my potential favorites.
