It really depends on the game for good tips. L-canceling is undoubtedly the most useful technique in Melee or Project M (pressing L right before you hit the ground makes your character end the move a lot quicker in those two games), but overall I think knowing when to shield and grab is very important. If you want to excel above your opponents, get fast reflexes for shielding. If you're shielding and you press A, you instantly grab them. Shield, they miss you and hit your shield, press a, it's a free grab.

As Faded said, most tips depend on the game and character. One simple one that as far as I know applies to every game is to go into training mode and get familiar with your character's moves. Probably overly simple, but knowing when certain moves kill or when certain combos stop and start working is incredibly useful for getting better.

The best thing to do is pick the character you're best at and just play smash with that character because you have study all of it's moves and how you can be able to pull off moves and win all the time, once you decide to use a different character, it can be quite difficult because you been used to your previous character, you need to learn those moves.
