This month's High Score competition is for 'Q*Bert' for the Nintendo NES. You can play it here:

The point of this competition is to get as high of a score as you can.


VIDEO REQUIRED: You must must use the RGR Plugin's built in video recording to record the gameplay and then upload that video to the Vizzed YouTube account.

RULES: You MUST play the game using the RGR Plugin in 'Timetrial Mode' and take a screenshot of your top score from that by pressing F6. To play in 'Timetrial Mode', scroll down the page where the highscores would appear, you'll see a link that says 'Click Here to Compete for Highscore', click that. Once you've taken your screenshot, click the link near that one that says 'Click Here to Submit your Score' to submit your score.

You cannot unfairly get points or lives or use a glitch of any sort. If you find something that gives out unlimited points or lives, it will not count.

1st = 25,000 Viz
2nd = 10,000 Viz
3rd = 5,000 Viz

This will be good for a high score competition. It is super difficult to get a really high score, but the game is very quick. A particularly good run will take less than 10 minutes. Nice choice. Brutal, but nice.

Q*bert, eh? Quite a fun little game to play, though hard to actually get anywhere with it. I screwed up momentously playing it through the first few games to get the hang of if and I'm probably going to need way more practice. Anyways, let's all hope for the best and have a fun time in the process.

DUDE!!! I love this game. Definitely gonna try my luck at the high score competition.

Is anyone else having trouble getting the game to even work? 

Q-Bert! Such a great game! I actually held the #3 slot on the high scores at my local arcade until some hot shot came in and put his initials down for several games over 200k points... *grumble*

Sadly, the NES version is hard to get used to. Totally different level patterns from the arcades and the controls aren't as forgiving. Best I can manage so far is Level 3-1 with a score around 30k but that's not playing in high-score mode.

My best at the arcades is 85k.

I am also having trouble getting the game to run, even without timetrial mode.
After it loads, an error message appears saying that there was an error while loading the file.
Sucks, because I really wanted to join this competition too.

PRO TIP: You can actually continue right where you left off, and theoretically, even if you start again with 0 points, you can get even more points with less levels than if you were to start from scratch. So even if you die a lot, don't reset the game just yet!

Foodperson : wouldn't that be cheating?

Ferdinand : You restart with 0 points every time, so it's not cheating.

Foodperson : But you're not starting on level 1. Correct? I can't check since I can't make the game work.

Ferdinand : You can't get the game to work? Did the Vizzed plugin work before? You need to update that plugin, so check Davideo7's announcement for that plugin (2.12, I think). Other than that, you need to click on "Compete for High Score" at the middle of the game's page.

Foodperson : that's not it. Don't worry about it. If every other game works for me except that one I don't think it's the plug-in. Either way I have the latest installed and am about to uninstall it for the new, new, upgrade,  2.2-dev7, so we'll see then anyways. I still think it's cheating by the way. Maybe a good way to achieve a personal high score, but not win this contest. I don't care either way.....unless you beat me.  

Ferdinand : Alright, but the way I see it is this: if the game allows me to continue from what level I died in, then it's all legitimate, not fraudulent, as long as the score resets to zero every time.

Ferdinand : It isn't cheating. The only things that are really considered cheating is if you find a way to get an unlimited amount of points/lives/etc to max the score, manipulate a glitch, cheat codes, etc. But something that is specifically built in to the game like this is not considered cheating. It is strategy. Honestly, not the best strategy. You are better off mastering the first few stages so you can make it to the ones you can't pass without losing a life, and you won't have to worry about your score resetting. On levels that I lose most of my lives on, I find that it is late in the game, and I can't really rack up as many points on those harder levels as I can getting through all of the easier levels.

Davideo7 : I am running into an issue with trying to screenshot my score. Every time I "Game Over", before I can press F6, the screen switches to the GAME OVER screen. I can't get a screenshot quick enough, no matter how fast I try and do so.

My question for you is this:

Would it be alright if we may take a screen shot while watching the video and then upload it to the Highscore Submission section of the Q*bert page?

That is the only logical suggestion (insert Vulcan pun here) I can come up with the resolve the problem.

This game shared the same file name with 2 other games in the RGR which meant if you played either one of them and then tried playing the other game of the same name on the other system, then the RGR Plugin would crash. I've fixed this problem now for these three:
