Hello, hello everyone! Laian here with a new walkthrough. For starters, it'll be a short walkthrough of a game I used to play when I was a kid. The main reason why it's a short walkthrough is because I worked during the holidays and couldn't start it before. So if some people are asking me why it's a short walkthrough this time, you now have the answer to your question. It's not laziness, trust me. Well, I wanted to replay that game for ages and make the walkthrough. So here we are, with a Disney game called Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. Yeah, Donald was not the only one who had a game released for Sega Master System. Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse also has a Sega Genesis with better graphics (that makes sense). But the only thing I hate with the Sega Genesis version is the fact that you can't choose the levels compared to the original version. So that's why I'm going to play the Sega Master System instead. I do believe there's some differences between the versions so I don't recommend to use this walkthrough for the Sega Genesis version. Anyway, time to start this walkthrough, that's enough story I guess. Welcome to Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse, folks.

WHERE EVERYTHING BEGINS

So, Minnie has been kidnapped by a witch because Minnie is too lovely and bla bla bla, let's skip the story. You can choose between practice mode and normal mode. The difference between these two modes is the number of gems you'll collect to finish the game. In the practice mode, you'll explore the three first levels and end the game afterwards. The normal mode will allow you to play the full game, including the final boss. That's it, you don't face the witch at the end of the practice mode. Then, the game starts. An old man talks to Mickey at the entrance of the castle. He mentions seven gems of the rainbow kept by the masters of illusion. Then, you enter the castle and notices three doors. This is where it begins and you can control Mickey. There's a few things to know about the game. Your main attack is your butt. Yeah, your butt. If you want to hit an enemy, you must jump over it and land with your butt by pressing button 1. At some points you'll be able to use items like apple, orbs... in order to get rid of your opponents. Some bosses can only be hit with the second attack but we shall see that in due time. Otherwise, the controls are simple: 2 is for jump, 1 is for your butt attack in mid-air (and you can grab items) and the direction pad for the movements. Ah and pause in order to... pause the game! (yeah for obviousness! ). That's all for the controls. Like I said during the introduction, the Sega Master System version allows you to choose the level you want. The first levels are the woods, toys land and candies land. Let's start with the first level from the left.

THE WOODS

Kill the first enemy, leap over the gap, blast the rocks to get the chest containing a piece of cake and go to the far east to find more chests. Use your attack to the right when you're in the pit to make two secret chests appear, each of the chests has a big coin. Now this is where you can choose between two paths. The first ladder leads to a shortcut and three chests containing a piece of cake, a small coin and a big cake. The shortcut can only be used from this spot. Use the pot with a «M» written on it to step on the ledge further, grab the goodies and break the two rocks in the pit to the right to go through the floor and reach the lower part of the level. The second ladder is the long way. Before going down once more, go grab the goodies to the right. Now, climb down the ladder, go right, use your butt attack to make a chest appear, don't open it and use it to find another alcove with two chests. Now, open the last chest, go west, leap over the gap, release the brown rolling ball, go back to the last platform and carry on to the left. Go down the ladder, duck to avoid the bee, throw a rock at the caterpillar then the apple at the second one and carry on to face the boss of that level. That tree starts with an attack. He throws three dangerous leaves at you. Jump over the projectiles and use your butt attack to hurt him. He will now spin and move back and forth for a while. He can't be hit in this situation so jump over him and wait until he stops and throws three new leaves to attack him. After four hits, he will die and drop the first gem. The woods are now complete. You can proceed to the next level.

TOYS LAND

Use the platforms to reach the far left of the level, skip the train, use the blue ball to get rid of the clown and go up. You can only stun the planes in this part. However, if you hit the controller pad, the planes will die. Go up, use the ball to get rid of the next controller pad and go up once more to find a star at the top left hand corner of the screen. It increases your health by 1 and it's permanent. There's another star like that one to get later in the game. Now, go back to the lowest platform drop down to the left to reach the chest and get a big coin. Go back to the train, use the barrel to land on a cloud of smoke made by the train and go up the ladder. Grab the barrel, use it to kill the chess piece and reach the upper part of the level. Grab the other barrel, kill the chess piece and use the barrel on the switch to raise the door. Go up, grab the barrel, jump over the bubbles and the gap then drop the barrel to reach the ledge and get a piece of cake inside the chest. Kill the clowns, go down then to the right to find a cake and a big coin. Now, you have two paths, you can go down or to the left. If you choose the western path, I suggest you to jump on the highest platform for a chest and a shortcut if you go through the wall to the west. You'll see the key kept by two balls and a chess piece (1). There's another way to get it but it's the long way. Just go down either with the ladder or the pit then go to the left and grab the ladder. Now open the door with the key but don't go through it yet. Go to the east, grab some stuff and go down. Now use the barrel to reach the ledge to the right and get an extra life and a coin. Fear not, you can go back up if you go to the left. Get rid of the clown, then the balloon the box to release a platform that will help you to grab the ladders. Now, you can face the boss behind the green door you just open. That boss is not that hard. You need to hit his head with your butt while avoiding the balls falling from the ceiling and his jumps. Do it three times and you'll get the gem of that world.

CANDIES LAND

That level is special compared to the last levels. It scrolls horizontally. That is just the first part of the level though. The first chest you will encounter has an extra life. Step on the platform and on the other platform to get it. When you are at the narrow passageway, hurry up and get rid of the cupcakes then step on the pie and reach the next part of the level. The chest contains a piece of cake and the other one a coin. Go down, then carry on. You will be chased by some donuts. First of all, go up, kill the biscuit and get a piece of cake in the chest. Now, go down then get rid of the cupcakes and go down. The milk won't hurt you but keep in mind that, if you sink, you instantly die. Press the jump button repeatly to avoid that. Use the platforms to reach the chest with a piece of cake inside and the ladder at the end of the line. Go down, kill the enemies, use the barrel a bit farther to reach the ladder, go up and pick up the cake and the coins in the chests. Now, go down, head to the west. Grab the ladder to let the rolling donut pass and carry on. Grab the goodies in the chests, kill the biscuits and go down. Time to face the boss. That giant and angry chocolate bar is your opponent. Compared to the last bosses, you must use an item to hurt him. It's a piece of chocolate falling from the ceiling when he punches the wall . The one you need to grab is the one with no face. If you are hit by anything when you hold the piece, you'll drop it and it will disappear forever, which means you'll have to wait until another piece falls down. I suggest you to go behind him, wait until he is complete to grab the piece so you won't lose it an finally throw it at his face. Hit him four times and stay back at the end of the fight. He can still you while he is exploding in pieces. The gem of this world is now yours.

------------

Once you collected the three gems, a ladder will appear to the left, allowing you to explore two more levels: the school land and the clocktower. These levels are special. They have two gems instead of one. One is as always kept by the boss, the other one is somewhere in the level. The level won't be complete until you collected both of the gems of each level.

THE SCHOOL LAND

That level traumatized me when I was a kid because of the boss. It took me -as always- a few years to figure out how to beat him. We shall see that in due time. Kill the enemies, leap over the gaps, skip the first ladder and carry on to the right. Climb up the next ladder, then go up once more and avoid the planes (or get rid of them with your butt) to reach the other part of the level. Go down, open the chest to the right and go west. Use the spoon to dive into the cup of coffee. I like that part of the level because the music is really relaxing and these cute little sugar pieces swim in this coffee like fishes in water. You'll find goodies in the chests. Once you are out of the cup, grab the ladder, open the chests to find two big coins and go down. Now, leap over the gaps, grab the ladder to the left, get rid of the enemies and use the barrel to grab the ladder. To your left, you'll see one of the two gems of this level then go right. After the letter A, use your butt to bash the floor and find a secret room with an extra life and a coin. Use the cup of coffee to the left to head back to the room before the gem. Go back there, go through the passageway and grab the barrel at the end of the line before going down. Leap over the gap, get rid of the letter and use the barrel to reach the ladder to the left. Kill the enemy, go right then down to find a cake inside the chest. Now, go back up, go down the first ladder, kill the enemy, pick up the piece of cake inside the chest and go down. There's another secret before heading to the boss' lair. Drop down then stick the wall to the left to go through the wall (2). Carry on to find two chests with an extra life and a coin. Now you can head back to the ladder and go down to face the boss of this world. This enemy is floating in the air and will throw some letters. Actually, you need to use your butt attack to bounce on the letters that levitate really close to the floor so you can bonk the top of his head. Don't even try to jump and bounce the ones flying really high in the air. I never beat this boss when I was a kid. A few years later, I was so pissed when I figured out how I was supposed to beat him. After five hits, he will die and the second and last gem of this world will be yours.

CLOCKTOWER

Do not worry, that one doesn't have any annoying enemy such as medusa heads. Go east, kill the first enemy an go up. You can see the first gem to the right but you can't get it yet so go west instead. Pass the cogwheels, go up then use the platforms to carry on, skip the upper ladder and climb down the other ladder to the right. Grab the last star and the big coin then climb up the ledge to the left to grab the first gem of the level. Now, go back up and climb up the ladder you skipped. Grab the bolt and use it to kill the cogwheel. Then do the same thing with the other bolt and grab the ladder. Open the chest to the left to get a piece of cake and carry on. With the help of the bolts you will find on the platforms, you will get rid of the enemies during your progress. Go down, go west, grab the piece of cake in the chest and go down. Use the bolt to kill the cogwheel, then go down. Press immediately the left direction button to step on the chest, jump into the wall to the left to find an secret room with an extra life, go back and open the chest to find a cake. Now, dive into the hole and face the boss. This boss is not that hard. The face of that grandfather clock will move forth and back, stops at one point and go towards you. Use the butt attack exactly at this moment to hurt him. Some cogwheels will spawn from the grandfather clock so you should get rid of them if it becomes troublesome. Fear not, only two cogwheels can spawn at the time. Hit the boss five times and the last gem will be yours.

------------

After collecting the gems, a new ladder will appear to your left. Climb it up to enter the real castle.

THE REAL CASTLE

You have a bit of walk to do before fighting the witch and save Minnie. Make your way through the weights and the enemies, use the barrel to create a platform before the stone wall so you can get rid of the top block and carry on. In the chest you'll find a small coin. Go up, use the lantern to light the place, use it to get rid of the mimic and open the chest to find a piece of cake. Now, use the lantern as a platform to reach the ladder and go up. Use the platform to go up, open the chests for some goodies and break the blocks to step on the moving platform. If you miss the platform, just go back down then up. Go up, find a coin inside the chest, grab the key, head back down and open the door to the left. Go up, kill the mimic, avoid the weights, blast the lonely block then the two blocks to the left to collect the reward inside the chest, go back up, do the same thing with the pile of block, go down to grab the key, go back up and open the door to the right.

Remember the candies land? This is the clone. Bonk the ghosts to make the gap, go up and let the scrolling help you to go through the narrow passageway. Get rid of the blocks, then use the ghosts to make the next gap, swim underwater to go through the passageway and carry on. Open the chest next to the door to find a coin and go through the door. Carry on, go left, then up, cross the pool of poisonous water to find some goodies and go back down. Go east, go down the second ladder (which is the only real ladder), use the lantern to get rid of the mimic and grab the ladder. The chest to the left contains a piece of cake. Though, you will blast the block underneath the chest so you'll have to go back, grab the lantern and go back up. Use your butt attack to make a chest (with a cake inside) appear and choose the door number two (the others are fake and teleport you back to the beginning of that part. Now, get rid of the blocks and face the... dragon. You can see a barrel in this arena. This will be your only weapon and ally for this fight. Grab it, stand underneath the dragon so he will shoot his shots down, jump on the platform and throw the barrel at his face. Get it back and repeat that method a few times in order to kill it. A new way opens. Open the chest to find a piece of cake and carry on. Now, it's time to face the witch. You can see a lantern in this arena. Like the dragon, you need to throw the lantern at your opponent. Watch out for the rocks bouncing all around the arena. Though, like the grandfather clock, she can only summon two rocks at a time. Grab the lantern, avoid the rocks and hit the witch with the lantern six times in order to beat her. Watch the final cutscene. Congratulations, you completed «Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse».

I remember seeing a different Mickey game on YouTube. Anyways, good game guide. I would like to play this game sometime in the future, and I might use this. Question: How do you decide what game to make a guide on? I just want to know.

ZeroTails :
Thanks. Well, for starters, I don't play the same system twice in a row. Then, it depends of how things turn out and how busy I'll be during the month. I'll play either a long game or a short one. It's all about length and depth so I can manage to make it before the month ends. It's a race against time every single month to be honest so you have to make sure the game will be completed and the walkthrough will be published within the month. That's the role of a Vizzed game guide writer when he or she is a part of the site staff. And finally, I like to diversify the games. In other words, I play famous games and underrated games. Sometimes, like I am, people are curious so they go ahead and give a "go" to the game. I'd like to play games I own like my PS2 games or my Gamecube games but I don't know what device I need to take the screenshots from my systems. The PS2 emulator and Dolphin emulator being a pain in the butt to configure so the game can run smoothly, the only option is the system itself. I'm working on that because I'd like to play some of my games. Those are the main criterions for my game guides.
