The Mega Man X series is known for having very good games in the series such as X, X2, X3, X4, X6 and X8. But like every video game series Mega Man did have some bad games in the series. The X line is no exception to the rule. Mega Man X7 was one of those games that was well not very good compared to others in the series. In this review I will be critiquing X7

WARNING: THIS REVIEW WILL HAVE TORNADO RANTS IN IT

Plot: 8
Several centuries have passed since Mega Man X6. During the centuries since Mega Man X6 the Maverick Wars have continued. X questions his motive for fighting and decides to retire as he can't stand fighting anymore. In fact X has mostly become a whiner. This leaves Zero as the only hunter to hunt down mavericks. With X retired a new group called Red Alert starts hunting down the bad guys. Red Alert is a group of vigilantes lead by Red and they have a new reploid named Axl. Axl is a new kind of reploid that he can copy enemies and literally take on their shape. The Maverick Hunters do not really like the way Red Alert deals with enemies but they do not want to fight them and have hunter groups fighting each other again. Red Alert grows more powerful until one day a familiar foe starts manipulating Red even blackmailing him. This familiar foe is none other than Sigma. Sigma forces Red Alert to turn Maverick. Axl seeing this defects to the Maverick Hunters. Axl explains why he left and ask X to make him a hunter. X refuses at first but eventually makes Axl a Maverick Hunter. Red Alert furious that Axl has defected challenge the hunters to a duel using 8 of their guys, who have turned maverick. Zero and Axl set out to discover why Red Alert has changed and to stop Red Alert. Eventually when Sigma reveals himself X comes out of retirement to put an end to the carnage.

Okay I really liked this plot and it was one of the good points of the game. The plot was nicely done. The plot shows creativity as we have new characters introduced. I thought the game did a good job of introducing the characters. I also liked how unlike other X games the plot is revealed in pieces in the game. In the past X games the plot was introduced first and maybe there would be a plot twist in the middle of the game. I also felt like they revealed Sigma at the right time. I mean anybody who has played these games know that Sigma would be involved somehow. The only thing that hurts the plot is X's whining. Why oh Why did Capcom have to make X into such a Whiner. I get it that he is tired of fighting but he just whines and whines about it. Thankfully this is the only game he whines in. At the end of the day I give the plot a 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 4
The graphics only good point was the colors and backgrounds were nice. That however is about it. For this to be a Play Station II game were horrible. Capcom tried to make this into a combination of 2D and 3D and did a horrible job at it. When playing through the game the game will switch 2D to 3D on you. This can really mess players up. Also it throws the sprites out of whack because the characters look out of whack and fuzzy. I do not know why though Capcom was bent on making this a 2D and 3D combo. The switching can also cause serious lags in stages which can mess up players too.  Mega Man X8 did not have these problems and is how a Play Station II game should be. I was expecting much better. I do not know why we got what we got in this game concerning graphics.

The controls were horrible in this game as well. Zero plays so sluggish that it is not funny. His controls remind me of a game controller that has gotten sticky around the buttons. X is even worse he plays more sluggish then Zero. Axl's controls are not bad but not very good either. I played X8 and it had very good controls the other X games had very good controls. So I though X7 would join the other 7 in having good controls but I was wrong. These are some of the worst controls I have ever dealt with in a Mega Man game, and that includes Classic, X and Legends series  the only other game was Mega Man II for Game Boy had control issues. The controls are so bad that they can get you hit or make it easier to fall into traps. I give the graphics and controls a rating of 4 out of 10. The only reason I give this game a 4 is cause of the color.

Sound: 5
The sounds in this game will drive you crazy. They are some notable tunes in this game but even the music is not that great. Mega Man Games both Classical and X are infamous for having very good stage music. X7 does not really have a tune that you can get hung on sometimes the music even sounds dull. The enemies shots sound decent and that is probably what keeps me from giving the sound a lower rating. The thing that really drives the sound rating down is the voice acting. I would argue the voices in this game is worse than Mega Man 8. Mega Man 8's voices as flawed as they were would be a 7 or 8 out of 10 compared to this game. X sounds such a whiner every time he speaks. Every time X spoke I just wanted to mute the TV, yeah its that Bad. Axl sounds more like a kid which is irritating to me as there is tingling in his voice. Sigma's voice is not intimidating like his other forms. The only two decent voices in this game are Zero's and Red's. Zero sounds like he normally would sound bold and serious his voice is what I would expect. Red's voice also sounds serious and bold.  Thus, I give the sound a 5 out of 10.

Replay Value (Addictiveness); 3
This is the least game I play in the X series. I have played it less than 5 times and I do not plan on playing it more anytime soon. What really takes the fun out of this game for me is the graphics. I have Autism for those that do not know. The switching to 2D to 3D aggravates me sensory wise and aggravates my Autism. So that reason takes the fun out of this game. Another thing is just the fact the sound and graphics are not very good. I know some may not be bothered by this but it is just not a fun game for me to play. I hate to say that because Mega Man is my favorite series to play. When I want to play an X game for the PS2 I play Mega Man X8. So I give this game a 3 out of 10.

Depth: 9
Okay X7 has what the other X games have and that is depth. This and the plot are the positive things about this game.  Like other X games 7 has lots of depth to it. You can play as Zero & Axl, Axl & Zero and when you rescue another reploids X can be unlocked. So you can have several combos of characters you can play as. They are also items to collect and they are well hidden so revisiting the stages is a must. Also each character has their own strengths which means you may have to revisit a stage to get all the items. Mega Man games are known for having high amount of depth and this one joins them. It is probably what keeps me from giving this game a lower rating.

Difficulty: 10
Mega Man games are known for being difficult. X7 is a difficult game but it is for the wrong reasons. Other Mega Man games are difficult due to hidden items, enemy placement, long stages, and difficult bosses. 7 has the enemy placement and difficult bosses to deal with and that makes the game difficult. But the wrong reason is the game is difficult due to the game switching between 2D and 3D. It can cause to get hit or fall into a pit. The game will do it to you several times in a stage so it becomes a huge problem. In addition, the sluggish and slow controls also make this game hard as the sluggish controls will cause you to get hit and fall into pits as well. The sluggish controls really become a problem in boss fights because the bosses often move very fast.

It feels like this game cheats on its difficulty. What I mean is it does not truly earn its difficulty rating but it is very difficult due to the games flaws. Mega Man X8 was difficult but that game was difficult for the right reasons enemy placement, item placement, long stages, difficult bosses among other things. X8 made you feel good when you beat a boss because it required skill, problem solving, creativity and some luck. Moreover, it made X8 a joy to play. X7 is difficult due to the controls and bad graphics. It makes the game more aggravating to play then fun. I like games like X8 or X6 that require skills to beat. I give the difficult rating a 10 out of 10 but as I have stated its because of the horrible graphics and controls not so much the difficulty. If the game did not have the flaws that it did I would probably say the difficulty would be a 7 or 8.

Overall: 5
I actually got X8 before I got X7. X8 was a fun game and I spent time to play X8. In fact I still like to play Mega Man X8. X8 is what a Play Station II game should be with good graphics, a good plot, good controls, depth, high replay value and its difficult. So I was hoping X7 would be like X8. I also remember getting the intro and it made me think this game has a good plot. Games that usually have good plots are usually decent to play. However, X7 had a good plot but was not a good game. It was nothing like X8 once I started playing through the stages my disappointment grew.

As I stated I have Autism and so the game switching back and forth between 2D and 3D messed me up sensory wise. Thus it took the fun out of playing this game. I do not know what capcom was thinking or trying to do with this game. I guess they were trying to introduce a 3D concept but they did terrible. It was like they did not put an effort into this. In fact this game felt incomplete like they rushed it or just did not put an effort into developing this game like they did others. Also what were they thinking about the voices and again why oh why did they make X into such a Whiner. I get it that he is tired and wore out of the fighting but he keeps on and on about it. It even gets on Zero and Axl's nerves. It just makes me want to mute the whole game.

In fact X7 received so much negativity that Capcom decided they would go back to the old way when they developed X8. Thankfully they listened and X8 ended up being a classic and a hit when it came out. I'm glad this game did not sink the franchise or  hurt X8. Sometimes when a game is bad it hurts the franchise or the game's serious. But just like Mega Man II did not hurt the Game Boy series as Mega Man II, IV and V for Game Boy were huge hits and have become classics. X7 did not sink the X series. X8 is the type of game that X7 should have been so I do not know why we got what we got with X7.  The flaws in this game or just to much for me. I hate that cause Mega Man is my favorite game to play and I do not let a couple of bad games ruin it for me. But this is a game I will not be playing again anytime soon yeah its that bad.

Now lets talk about the Positives. This game did have some positive things about it. The plot was very good introducing characters and did a good job with the creativity. Also the game did have some depth to it which I really liked. I like games with lots of depth to them and X7 carried the high amount of depth that other Mega Man games had.

Final takes on this game. Mega Man X7 is the clunker of the Mega Man game series. I can only think of another Mega Man game that was bad and that was Ii for Game Boy. I do not know why this game was horrible but it is. At the end of the day I give this game a 5 out of 10. I wanted to give the game much higher as Mega Man is my favorite series, but this game just has too many flaws. Would I recommend this game. No I would not recommend this game. If players are wanting a good  X game to play for PS2 I would recommend X8 it is a very good game.

I agree with you. Even though I have never played the game, I have seen YouTube videos, and I don't like what I see. I like the plot as well, with the addition of Axl and him transforming, his gameplay COULD have been a fun experience. They screwed that up, though, and I wish they expanded more on the characters Axl interacted with, especially Red (Must. Not. Make. A. Pokémon. Reference.). The changing to 2D and 3D could have been done a lot better, like Sonic Colors. I think them trying to put 3D into the game ruined the game. Some franchises did the transition perfectly, like Mario and Sonic, and Pokémon to an extent. But not this franchise. I hate bad controls. So I would probably hate this game. I have to disagree on the sound, though. I liked a few tracks, like the maverick boss battle theme, and the intro theme. I don't want to play the game in the first place, let alone play it multiple times. I think X6 did the depth a little better than X7. Maybe they could test run the game, but I don't know how much that would help in the long run. Good review, and I think I'll avoid this game like the plague now.

X8 is really good and it fixed this ones problems Red could have been emphasized more especially when it comes to Axl.  I got this game cause it was the only one I did not have in the X series

I'm actually planning on getting this game, just to see if there is anything good with it. I want to play X8, but I don't really like the character redesigns. A little nitpick of mine. It seems like they just put Red in because... we need more characters? He didn't really seem to have a purpose in X7. So... you have Command Mission? I've always wanted to play that game. Also, maybe next time you could summon me if you wanted to reply to my post. Just something I would have liked.

Okay Mega man X7 was a really hard hit for the franchise of Mega man
X7 tried to create an early development of 3d version for mega man, explain better
Mega man fans wanted a new style of game play refreshing the franchise
but with out leaving the classic old style, the programmers didn't know how to that
and then X7 was the result of the Fans pressure, is better know when to stop
X8 was good but was late Mega man X have no future for me, and all because this game.
and that's to bad

Mega man fans wanted a new style of game play refreshing the franchise
but with out leaving the classic old style, the programmers didn't know how to that
and then X7 was the result of the Fans pressure, is better know when to stop
X8 was good but was late Mega man X have no future for me, and all because this game.
and that's to bad
