Many Gamers are aware of the Gaming Controversy. Namely, that gaming is a negative influence on people. It supposedly inspires violence, etc. But, I don't believe that. I think that Gaming can help ones Social Skills, Reaction Times, Creativity, and Processing Skills. According to various Sources, I'll try to put the links below, games can help a person gain higher reaction times, social skills, moral and ethical decisions and such things.

I am surprised as I do more research at how it can be positive... According to these articles it has many effects, I'll just let you read the article.

What do you guys think, how did Video Games help you?

Locals, I'm not sure if this should be here or in the Debate forum, but I was hoping to not debate this, but rather have it orientated on positive effects, and video games.

Okay, now for me, I think that I have more flexible fingers, because of games. I use a PC so I need to use fingers and move them. Reaction time has been much better! When I go to Krav Maga, I find myself being faster then many opponents... I have no clue why! I'm just a little faster. I also have faster decision making skills. I play many RTS games, which means that I have to react to multiple situations with little delay between two separate decisions.

Many people talk about the decline in Violence due to Video games, here is the article to support that Theory.

I work in warehouses.
If a person can navigate and use the "Fallout 3+" inventory well?
I'll put them on My Inventory Team.

That Menue is such a mess I have little words to describe my admiration to players who not only "roll with it", But "Master it" as well.

(I'm Joking. ...Slightly.)

Point is....
How can a hobby that is known to generate or encourage problem solvers be a negative thing?
Just a thought.

Good Luck To All.
Peace.

It helps a lot especially with people who has mental disabilities. In a way it makes you more smarter, intelligent. How should I explain that? Well its confusing really. I played a lot of rpg games and learned more reading from there as the dialogues helped. What else...most games teached me to control my emotions. teached me about life in a way. How to help yourself more. And to do with happiness and sadness as well. If I didn't play video games, I would say my grammar will not be up to how it is today. Though I did stop writing for a long time when I finished collage years ago. Its really helpful it really is. I don't really play the games of today. These ones I was talking about would be old school games like pokemon, final fantasy and more.

When people tell me that playing video games makes you stress and angry, that's actually not true for me. Video games bring me to a world where you can relax. They actually help calm me down in situations that stress me out, so whenever I feel stressed, I turn to video games for help. That, and Vizzed.

Well, without video games, I don't think I would be on where I am today, because when I was in school, I did do a few of my studies on video games, and not those education ones, I mean, real video games. Like a couple of them, like the GTA series, without those games, I wouldn't know some of the consequences that will follow if you break the law, without that game, there is a few things I never knew was against the law. Plus, it's not just the GTA series, but a couple other series like Pokemon, Mario, and especially Minecraft. So, a lot of video games helped me learn, even more than school did.

I've been saying this stuff my whole life. ._. Anyway, video games have had a huge positive in my life. I'm a (by blood) only child, and video games have really given me "siblings". I say "siblings" because I know that they are not real people, and I know that they do not have a strong influence in society. But, they entertain me in many ways. And, looking at those studies and lists you gave, I really do think that they give you ethics. I can not TELL you how many times I have made a decision in Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, heck, even Mario, that I regret because it affected another character in the game in a negative way. And, when you get into games like CoD, Minecraft, and WoW, where you are forced to interact with other human beings to make your experience better and more efficient, it really helps social skills. Think about it! If you have a Mage and a Cleric in a party, your not going to do as well as, say, a Cleric and a Warrior, or a Mage and a Warrior. RTS, RPG, and most other genres help you in different ways. Someone make a list... Ways video game genres help you. Please. =3

EDIT:

I forgot to address the "video game violence" (Thought you got rid of me, huh?). Video games causing violence is one of the dumbest things I have EVER heard. No one is complaining about television, or books, or music causing violence. But when a dude shoots some kids and he just HAPPENED to be on of the millions of people world wide that plays CoD, everyone blames the game. And, the sad part is, the people that commit these crimes either have a mental problem or a history of violence before they started playing video games. And, I don't know about you, but video games actually help me take out my aggression. If I get ticked off at anything, I can just go into a video game and kill a few things. I'm all better! I'm sure this wouldn't work for everyone, but it does for me. So, to say that video games cause violence is not only stupid and ungrounded, but it is also hypocritical.

Video games have had an extremely positive effect on me actually. Since I began playing them when I was literally in diapers, didn't actually understand how to play until I was three but I still held the controller, I loved them so much I dreamed of one day creating video games, but I thought it was impossible because making something so amazing and realistic and huge must be really hard (I didn't understand the word "teamwork" back then). Fast forward to high school and I find out that programming is actually super easy, my high school even has a video game development class! So I take all the classes and get pretty decent at programming, my friend is also a programmer though and he recently got a job as a programming intern. So long story short he lands me an awesome job when I'm only a sophomore and now I get to sit around on a computer all day coding websites, it's pretty awesome. And this is all thanks to video games.
Oh yeah and like "spatial reasoning" and "finger dexterity" and "reaction time" where all things improved by my gaming hobby.
The only thing I would say that came out of my hobby that's negative would be my tendency to want to play video games rather than hang out with other people. I had no close friends until I was 10 because I simply didn't feel a need for friendship. That's not to say I didn't talk to anyone though, I did, I was even on a baseball team when I was little, I just never connected with anyone in a meaningful way. I'm still partially like this today too, if I have an interesting enough video game to play I feel no need for social interaction until I get bored of it.
But honestly I believe this mindset of mine would have happened regardless of my video game hobby as I probably would have just done the same thing with books if I had never played video games. Only minus becoming a programmer and making money because of it.
So in the end video games ended up making me lots of money and possibly made me a little less social than I would have already been naturally.

Video games helped me get a job. Seriously, I've recently been recruited to write a strategy guide for an upcoming indie PC game, which is a paid position. If I didn't play video games, I wouldn't have had that opportunity.

In addition, video games are a form of storytelling. I play a lot of RPGs, which transport me to faraway worlds and let me live out the fantasy. Some games tell stories that can rival books and movies in their craft and since I'm a writer, I learn from any form of storytelling. Even games that aren't story-centered usually exhibit some level of creativity. Seriously, how do you originally come up with the idea of a guy jumping through blocks and eating mushrooms that make him grow bigger to eventually defeat a giant tortoise-like creature?

Video games also teach me to be observant. I don't have the fastest reflexes in the world, but games help me sharpen them and keep an eye out for unexpected dangers. They also teach me to keep trying even when I just want to throw my computer against the wall in frustration.

I find video games to be a form of entertainment, but also a stress reliever, or if I am angry it calms me down. So many people claim that violent video games, or video games in general, rot are brain, and turn us into mass murderers, well i call B.S on that. Because never once in my lifetime have I felt like killing someone in the style of a video game. I play some of the most violent games of all time, and I just play them, and when I and when I am done, I don't feel any urges or anything.

Well there are some really good answers here.

Eniitan : I actually remember reading in a video game magazine as a kid that some people were using Video Games to teach kids to read. Your post reminded me of that, and I thought you might be interested in hearing it.

Super Mega Man 568 : I have to agree with you here as well, in fact, your comment on social skills is exactly what I came in here intending to post. But your comments on violence are also spot on: people often use games as a way to unwind and relieve stress and release anger in a healthy way. And indeed, it is hypocritical that people say violent games cause violent acts but never talk about shows rated TV-14 or MA strictly for violence causing people to do violent things. I think people just need something to blame because they don't want to admit that some people are just bad or even evil.

crash703 : Sweet! I actually found a job in game making as well, though as an Indie developer. It's awesome to hear stories like yours.

LieselSolo : It's great to hear someone say that about games and storytelling. Too often people who have no experience with games try to judge.

For me, games (namely Harvest Moon) taught me that it only takes minutes to destroy a relationship that took years to build. This showed me to weigh all of my words and actions before I say or do them because every word and deed counts, and could have lasting effects on others. Also that everyone has feelings just like me, so I try to be a nice guy to everyone at all times if at all possible.

Eirinn : And it's the same case for the internet. No one commits suicide ONLY because they got called a bad name on the internet. There was either something else or just held a gun to their head and shot. But it's NOT the internet. Then, if the government themselves drive a person to suicide, it's because they weren't LOVED. Doesn't that sound stupid? Yeah, it does. In fact, the advent of the internet and video games also gives more equality to the world. The internet is the one place you can fight back and do what you like. Proof? Obama wants to control it. Need you any more proof? And video games allow amatures to make millions of dollars for a game that took a few days to make (Flappy Bird). Does anyone else think that's the bloody American dream?

There was either something else or just held a gun to their head and shot. But it's NOT the internet. Then, if the government themselves drive a person to suicide, it's because they weren't LOVED. Doesn't that sound stupid? Yeah, it does. In fact, the advent of the internet and video games also gives more equality to the world. The internet is the one place you can fight back and do what you like. Proof? Obama wants to control it. Need you any more proof? darthyoda : First of all, I got to say that I like your thread. Secondly, I feel that video games has helped me in a number of ways. First of all, reaction time. I feel that playing many different games has bettered my reaction time. Secondly, problem solving skills. Many games require you to figure out various puzzles and whatnot, so it forces my brain to work (whereas tv would not.) Next up, adaptability. I have played a wide variety of game styles over quite a number of consoles.Play station, super nintendo, wii, game cube, gameboy color, and even the wii u. I feel that this adaptability has aided me greatly in my typing skills. Oh, and one more thing, creativity. First of all, I give GOD the credit for this one. But I also think that seeing all the different things that I see in games has given me some of my own ideas for stories and whatnot. Basically, I do not play the extremely violent games, so that has never been an issue for me. But there is one thing that people might overlook. Kids that tend to come home and play video games, are not as apt to get in trouble causing mischief and whatnot. Why? They are at home playing video games! It really is a great way to keep busy when all your other family is busy and you have free time by yourself. And...I've had a lot of that.
