I have never been a big fan of Pokémon and have tried my best to avoid the games for it . I found the anime quite annoying and tended to go more for Digimon and other animes like that. Since I got my current job as a in home health care person I have been hearing from clients at my house non-stop every day I work about how great Pokémon is. All about the current Pokémon they have caught or are leveling up to make it evolve. I have liked Digimon, Monster Rancher, and some other monster raising and breeding games. I figured what the hell I would try a Pokémon game. Now here is where I need the help : I would like to get some help from everyone who likes the game to tell me what game I should start with and a small run down on why they think that one is best to start with or just the best in their opinion.

Well Brain in my opinion, Pokémon Crystal Version was always fun and addicting when I was younger
still to this day i play it.

A small run down on the game:

Pokemon Crystal, although pretty identical to gold, and silver (with
some added extras) is a breathtaking game, and you will love it from the
minute you even see it. Even if you have a bad attitude towards Pokémon, getting and playing this game will change your opinion on all
of Pokémon!

GamePlay:

The game play in this game I can guarantee will go beyond all of your
previous expectations. In the game, you turn 10-years-old. You can now go out on your own into the world of Pokémon! You must go down to mom, get all the stuff you'll need on the journey.

After this, you need to walk out of your house, and go into Professor
Elm (the newest pokemon professor in the world of pokemon)'s lab. In
here, you and you're rival will get your Pokémon. Your choices are
Cyndaquil, (the fire Pokémon), Totodile, (the water Pokémon), and
Chikorita, (the grass Pokémon). You're rival will choose the pokemon who
is super affective against yours. After this, you begin your long and pokemon journey!

Plus, in crystal you get to see alot of new items and places that weren't in previous games (Clear ball, Buena's Password ect.)

All in all this game is a 10/10, a must play especially for new players!

Have fun playing, Brain!

The first question you might want to ask is on what system you'd like to play the game. For example, the newer games can't be played on systems such as the gameboy advance or gameboy color. Also, would you want to spend money on a system you don't have yet in order to play the games?

If you have/want a 3ds, I'd suggest X or Y for your first games, since they are the first games of the current 6th generation of pokemon, giving you access to all of the current features and mechanics. They have a great storyline circling around a destructive weapon made in a war like a thousand years ago, everything is well explained, and they have great graphics.

If you don't want to buy any new systems than what you have, please state what systems you do have so we can base our opinions on that.

Hey thanks for the answers y'all. I started Pokémon Crystal in the retro game room. Per your suggestion Sonic. I'll let ya' know what I think of it later.
@ Funny Not sure I wanna buy a game yet for it as I am still very new to the games and looking to see if I will like them enough to buy one to play at home. So far I am just looking for ones to try out in the game room in here to get an idea if I like it or not. As far as systems go that I have at home : Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP.

So yeah just looking for suggestions at the moment. :O)

Brain-Splattered : I'd say definitely start with one of the older games especially since it's free and most of them are excellent games in which case I'd also recommend Pokemon Crystal for the GBC which you can play in the RGR. Alternatively you could also start with Pokemon Emerald for the GBA if you want better graphics and more Pokemon to catch or if you liked Crystal and just want another Pokemon game to play. Anyways more importantly I wouldn't recommend starting with Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow reason being that despite those games being great for their time in my opinion they haven't aged that well and are riddled with glitches not to mention the game lacks a lot of features that was later introduced and is pretty unbalanced. You can still play and enjoy them but they fail in comparison to later games.

Alternatively if you have a ds or 3ds I'd recommend Pokemon Black/White personally as the 5th generation is in my opinion the best generation so far gameplay wise (though the graphics aren't as good as later games, otherwise they're great). The older games on the RGR also have remakes that you could try out. For example Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen which are remakes of the original games that fixed most of the issues such as the glitches and balance issues which you can also play in the RGR due to them being released on the Gameboy Advance.

And if you have any questions about the game feel free to ask! I consider myself more knowledgeable then most when it comes to Pokemon and I'd love to help out.

@ Zlinqx Well thanks a lot for the information on the games. Graphics are not a huge thing to me considering I started out with the original pong and also had the fun of going through colecovision, intellivision, and atari. As long as the gameplay and story are consistent to very good then the game has my name all over it. I am checking out crystal right now and if I find I like it I may jump up to a newer version then. Again thanks for the heads up and advice. I'll keep it in mind cuz I may wind up hitting you up for help with the game if it keeps my interest. :O)

Brain-Splattered :  If you want to start out on an easy game, well they really all start out easy, but for my pick, my best is to play the first game in the series which is Pokemon Red and Blue, because if you play those games, you can get an idea on what you're playing. if you play Red and Blue, if you need help picking a starter, for me, I choose Charmander, the reason why is that started is a pretty amazing Pokemon to use, and also, unlike the other two Pokemon starters, Charmander may get another Pokemon the Burn effect which will decline their health which is an advantage. Mostly that's my point of view to use.

I would definitely say that the classical ones are the ones to start with. The newer ones and the remakes are good in terms of graphics and offer more features, but I feel they are a little bit too easy compared to the classical ones. The classic Red/Blue/Yellow and Gold/Silver/Crystal are the ones that really brings a charm to them. (The battling sequence is also faster) Crystal is definitely the best version of the classics. Starting at Crystal instead of RBY doesn't necessarily affect the story since there are quotes in the game that make the player remind them about the story of RBY, but you may miss a couple of references here and there.

I'm going to agree that the original ones are the best ones to start off with. I would suggest starting off with a gen 2 game, like Gold.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Looks like I have been steered in the right direction then with me starting with Pokémon Crystal first. I'll keep the other suggest in mind as far as those that suggested games to advance to when and if the one I am playing keeps my interest and pokes me ( pun of course ... sorry couldn't resist ) into going for one of the newer more updated games. Again thanks for answering so fast and for all the information.

Brain-Splattered : No problem but yeah I'd steer clear from the original generation of Pokemon games (Red/Blue) for now, like I said they can still be enjoyable but are not nearly as good as the later games if you want to know more about that you could also check out the review I did of Pokemon Blue if you want. It's a bit old but it will probably give you a better idea of why. Not to mention the games have gotten more complex for each generation as new moves and strategies are created.

And yeah I'd figure most people here don't care too much about graphics (considering this is a site mainly centered around retro gaming) including myself, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyways. And sure just pm me or send me a profile comment if you have any questions or need any help with anything relating to Pokemon

Well I said I would come back in and give my opinion on Pokémon. Here it is and for those that love Pokémon don't get your shorts in a knot. I have been playing crystal a bit in the retro game room and have tried some emerald as well with the games my clients have at my job. I can see where the appeal would be for kids and somewhat the appeal for adults. As the type of game it is I find it to be very good. I also like that the story stays consistent. I can't say it would be my first choice in games but I can say I am somewhat swayed to thinking of Pokémon as a game worth playing and not just a kids game with an annoying set of cartoons. I do find it a bit frustrating but that could just be the fact that I refuse to use walkthroughs and want to try to find everything myself.

Due to accessibility, as well as the balancing of mechanics not seen in Gens I and II, I'd recommend you started with Pokemon Emerald. This might be a very obvious choice, but I think that Emerald is a great start place for inexperienced players. In Gens I and II, many mechanics were stupidly broken, and the games come off as a little harder and less fun, and for all the wrong reasons. Don't get me wrong, I love Gen II, but the balance in Gen III's game mechanics make the games easier, for good reason, and more fun. Also, due to Vizzed's game library allowing play of the Gen III games, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, they are easier to access than the later games in the series like Black and White. Overall, I'd leave the choice to you, but I can recommend Pokemon Emerald. On the upside, there isn't really a chronology plot-wise, so you can play the games in any order and still have lots of fun with them.

Brain-Splattered : You can try Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen version. It's an amazing adventure, challenging, and lovable journey! Many Pokemon to catch, so you should definitely give a try to this game! It's a good Pokemon game to start with.

marianne26 : Brain didn't ask for what your favorite starter is. He asked for a Pokemon game to get a fresh start with.

In my opinion, the Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal games are the easiest for a beginner. I say that because I myself didn't even hear of Pokemon before my mom got me Gold and Silver for my birthday one year. I started playing the game first, then I started watching the TV show, then I even started to collect some cards and trade them with friends when I was still in middle school. I wasn't into it that much because I only know my Pokemon up to generation 2, but I'm still constantly playing it. Even today ( 15 or so years later ) I still play it every once in a while.

Brain-Splattered : Actually, I recommend you try Gold/Silver, if you haven't already done so. These two are the best if you've never played it before. I see in your last post you've played Crystal and Emerald a little bit, but give Gold/Silver a shot too, if you get a chance.

I am currently trying Crystal and so far it is going ok but not that much of an interest grabber for me. Have only played a few minutes or so of emerald so I couldn't give a real opinion of that one. Thank you for the suggestions I will definitely check them out cause crystal is not really grabbing my interest.
Also have to agree with Greenluigi I am asking for good games to start playing. I am not a Pokémon veteran or anything like that. I simply want to see what all the excitement is about and if it is a game I'd like to start playing regularly. So I have something to talk about in that particular set of games with friends who do like to play it almost religiously. lol

Well I tried more Pokémon games and I have to say that it is not for me. Although I do see what the attraction is for those that do like them. Just not my kind of game. Thanks for the suggestions and the background. Maybe someone else new to Pokémon will see this and take one of you guys advice on it and become a fan. Anyways take it easy and thanks.

Brain-Splattered : I think the best game to start off with is Pokémon Heart Gold/ Pokémon Soul Silver. These games are pretty easy, fun, and lengthy. If you need a walk through for any Pokémon game, either go to http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page  or http://www.psypokes.com/.
