Does every Final Fantasy game come with a terrible character?

I've been mulling over doing a review of a couple Final Fantasy games, and started noticing a disturbing trend. While the series is known for engrossing storylines and memorable music and characters - are  there characters that drag the whole experience down?

I thought a bit about this, and realized every FF game I've played a lot of, probably had one of these. Not just characters I disliked for their personality, but sometimes they bring no useful abilities, or they come too late into the game to care about.

For me, I'd have to say, yes, as far as I can remember. Every FF I've played had a character I would just as soon not have in the game.  I even made a list.

FF1- Red Mage
FF2 (4 in U.S.) - Edward the Bard
FF3 (6 in U.S.) - Gau the wild kid
FF7 - Cait Sith
FF8 - Laguna
FF9 - Amaranth
FFX - Kimari
FF12 - Vaan

FF tactics (SNES) - Rapha and her brother Marach

I disliked all these characters for a variety of reasons. Does anyone else have a list of characters from different games?

I've also played some other FF games, but not as much as the above list, and would take a playthrough to recall them.  Is there an FF game that you loved all the cast?

Meh. the only one I have played was X and I used to use Kimari a lot because of the ability to see the HP of the oppostition and against some battles, I would find that to be very helpful.

>Laguna

Opinion discarded

I thought Seifer's goons were much more annoying that Laguna ever was

And yeah, it absolutely seems that every FF has a bad character

FFXIII's Hope takes the cake for worst FF character imo. "m-muh murder!"

I was agreeing with this post thinking to myself about edward from ffII and then I read your list.  Gau from FFIII is one of my favorites.  I'll give you that his story line is weak, but as a character he can be one of the most powerful.  Also going around and learning new abilities with him was always great fun.  I do believe square intentionally puts characters in that are either unlikeable or weak.  I think they do this either for challenge in the case of weaker characters or just to create some tension by having a character you don't like.

The intent isn't to have an annoying character but you have so many different characters, you're going to find one you don't like.  Look at the cast in Final Fantasy III.  There are 12 different folks you can play.  They have to be different from each other with different story lines and different motivations and they can't all be cookie cutter characters.

Of course you're not going to like one character out of twelve.  That's just pure social science right there.  It is a trend only because you see so many people.  Look at a linear game that something like Halo or Link.  You have a few characters, you develop a story line around one main character and everyone's happy.  Or if you're not, you don't play the game.  It's like having a sports game and thinking every team has a crappy player with bad stats.  Of course they do.  That's just how this goes.

I challenge you to write out a story with 9 conflicting characters who enter and exit at different points and make them all likeable.  That's tough work and I wouldn't want to do it.

Do I dislike some characters from final fantasy?  Yes.  But I understand it's impossible to make them all great and perfect.

Here's my list of least favorite FF characters from each game. This list is only limited to games that I played a decent amount of.

4: I guess Edward, but I really didn't dislike any of the party members in this game.
6: Either Strago or Umaro
7: Aeris *dodges tomatoes being thrown at her*
8: Seifer
9: Amarant
10: Wakka, but same story as 4
12: Either Penelo or Basch

fightorace : I'm going to post a review of FF 6 soon, and I just couldn't get over Gau's terrible abilities. Lose him for a lengthy period, and he comes back with the ability to play like Umaro. Woo.
The Tarzan type backstory I wasn't fond of, but thats just me. Gaus dealings with Cyan were humorous (as Cyan was sometimes played for laughs himself - when he wasn't busy being super tragic), and I did enjoy meeting Gau's dad.

There are 3 main characters who borrow abilities from the enemy. Blue mage Strago, Copy artist Relm, Copy boy Gau, and Copycat Gogo. While I would argue Relm is not so good either, and Gogo's can be a bit of bad luck, Gau's you have the least control over- and the chances of finding a decent enemy for him to imitate were slight for me.

endings :  When you first get Gau it is pretty early in the game.  There are a couple ablilities you can learn on the veldt like wind-slash that is just so effective.  I remember using him so much back in the day because I had run into a couple of abilities that would just decimate the enemies.  Using the power of the internet and I've discovered even more new extremely powerful abilities he can learn.  I kinda got lucky back in the day and gained some of the better ones w/o too much effort.  I think when it comes to this topic I think Warmaker has a good point.

I think it is tough to make a long list of character that everyone will like all of them.  At the same time I think that square is intentionally making some characters unlikable for one reason or another just to add to the complexity of feelings you get from playing the game.

warmaker :  just sommoning cuz I referenced you in my post.

warmaker :

I can see how Gau would be useful early on. Kind of like how Umaro is quite useful in the Fanatics Tower. The Veldt is so random however, but perhaps the large cast caused me to overlook him alot.

The last part of my comment was about if anyone had liked ALL the characters from a Final Fantasy game, which I think references what you both are mentioning trying to have a diversive cast to appeal to all players.

Just because I don't like a character from every FF doesn't mean someone cannot like them all. I am interested in hearing the positive and the negative. Does anyone like ALL the characters from one of the FF?

Kinako :   seems to have found FF2(4) to have a well done cast, and I don't see anything wrong with that, Edward is a minor character at best.

Well, it does always come down to perspective. I for one, enjoy the red mage class, as it is extremely helpful in certain situations, but I prefer Black Mage when I need to hit heavy. As for the white mage, I prefer it over the red mage since it gets holy, I mean, who doesn't like holy?

Joey@themall : Who doesn't like holy indeed (or Pearl)? I just didn't like how Redmage is weaker at the endgame, losing that last branch of spells. Like Gau listed above, he is strong to start it seems.

endings : True. If Edward had been a permanent party member, THEN I might have found him annoying.

I love Holy! Especially from Rosa (FF2/4) and Yuna (FF10)!

I guess, yeah. It's impossible to have a game without an annoying or terrible character. Melee's Ice Climbers and Kirby, Soulcalibur V's Aeon (sorry, he sucks except for his wings), Pokemon's Cascoon, and of course many Final Fantasy characters. I typically find Red Mages pointless (all we need is a Black Mage) and Cait Sith is pretty terrible too. But not every game has a "terrible" character.

What you said about FFX... Kimahri is badass. As with other characters, Auron is super badass, Wakka is awesome, and Rikku is hot fun. Yuna is pointless except for the secret optional Aeons, Tidus is really annoying and only good for his sphere grid starting position, and then there's Lulu. I would choose Lulu as the terrible character. She sucks so bad. Completely pointless and has really bad stats. She's really slow, too. On a final note, her Celestial Weapon is bums to get.

TheFadedWarrior : Awkward Tidus scenes aside - I can't hate on Yuna. She brings us the main storyboard aspects of the temples and explaining the fayth by showing the player how it affects this world.

Your comment about Red Mage is actually why I  didn't like the Ronso. Personality wise, Kimahri at least acts like a guardian, which is more than I can say for some - but his tiny base grid reeks of Red Mage to me. Go ahead and move into the skill set of another player, woo, unoriginal.

I found Rikku a little annoying in her peppiness, and by the time I got her Wakka was mopping the floor with anything so I didn't see much need for her combining powers, just a thief.  But I did find Lulu hot interesting, if just for her dolls and strange fashion sense.

Honestly I didn't think that any characters from Final Fantasy 4 were terrible. I kinda liked Edward the Bard even though he was a coward.

Terrible? I think that's not the right word. Yeah, red mage sucked and Edward was rather weak; Laguna was rather lame too. But I enjoyed Gau for his special attacks, Cait Sith for his special attack and Kimari was cool for his calmness despite being picked at by other Ronsos

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
