Look, the title of this thread might be a little extreme....but I'm not sure what else to put. So, whenever I watch videos on youtube about a really really sad video game, movie, tv show, or occurrence, I see that all the comments say that they cry almost every time they see that. It's the same thing when I'm talking to somebody about it in real life. They always say they literally cried when they saw whatever the sad thing was, even if it's a guy. And I'm always just sitting there, not having a clue why they would cry. I didn't even cry during the Titanic, or mother 3. and I have a twin brother! No matter how sad the thing I see is, the closest I get to crying is being very sad and mopey. I'm pretty sure I've never cried to anything but physical pain except maybe 1 or 2 times. So, am I just really, really tough or does anybody else feel the same way??

Nah, there's nothing wrong with you. First, a lot of people don't seem to know the meaning of the word "literally". I hear people say things like "I literally died of laughter" or "I'm literally about to kill her", which obviously isn't literal. It is probably the same thing in this case. Also, a lot of people just say things like that on YouTube videos to try to get attention. There is nothing weird about not crying about things that are sad.

I'd call it emotional tolerance.
I hardly ever cry over anything sad that isn't directly related to me. Maybe if someone close died or I messed something up horribly I might cry but stuff like the titanic doesn't effect me the same way.

People do cry over these things and get sad. However sometimes the "cry every time" comments are just jokes. Usually if they look like "crie evfry tim"

If it's a matter of you being really tough, then maybe it's just because you are popeye.

MechaMento : Nah, I know that meme. I can tell whether people are joking or not with it, and most of the time they aren't.

I call it emotional intolerance.  You aren't the only person who doesn't react with tears or crying but perhaps you're perceiving sad things in a different manner.  If you have no empathy and you simply have no sad feelings, that might mean trouble.  One element of psychopathy or sociopathy is a diminished or non-existent sense of remorse or empathy.  You find no sadness in anything and you don't or won't experience the human emotion of sadness or loss and you're missing out on a wonderful part of life.

There are some things that don't bother me but I tear up as a grown man (32 years old) and I feel those emotions.  People make feelings out to be the enemy or terrible.  Feelings are simply a part of our experience in life.  They aren't bad or good.  They're just there.  How we react is a different story and people using anger or rage and going out and killing others is bad, of course.

Do other people feel the same way?  Sure.  There are people who don't cry and won't cry.  It doesn't make you tough, though.  Not allowing yourself to cry makes you weaker because you're not releasing the pent up tension and stress from sad situations.  Crying is an excellent way to burn energy.

Try it one time.

tgags123 : Not me. When I say "I am literally about to kill him/her", I am using 'literally' correctly. I can't even begin to tell you how many skeletons are literally in my backyard. Can't even have the dogs back there anymore because they keep digging...

But yeah, it isn't like you were on the Titanic and experiencing that even. A lot of people don't cry at movies or television. It isn't real and there isn't a REAL personal connection between you and any fictional character. So why should you have to cry? In all honesty, I have never personally met someone who literally cried at a video game. I bet the majority of people who say the did are exaggerating.

You're not heartless. Believe me, there are many times I hear that the girls in my class cried while I and other boys didn't and were either laughing or were just bored.

People who say things like that on Youtube either did it in a burst of sadness and didn't think carefully about it or for attention.

If you aren't crying because you want to be tough, then that's stupid. But if you aren't crying just because you aren't sad and you don't feel like it, then it's no problem.

Popeye116 : No I don't think you are heart less you even said you still feel it. I think you may just be one of those people that don't cry. The good thing is that you still feel sad or happy. I usually don't cry at those ether but if I saw it in real life I probly would because it is different if you see it yourself.

Hi, I do not think you are heartless. Some people show emotions in a different way. I'm Autistic and I do not boo hoo like a lot of people. Yes I have cried and I know I can cry but sometimes I can't show my emotion. So just cause you may not cry does not mean you are heartless or not caring. I hope this helps

warmaker and rcarter2 are fabulous people to listen to.  If I still had any likes left for the day, I'd happily like both of their posts.

I don't think you're heartless, though I understand the worry. I've wondered often if I'm heartless... but my issue is much, much deeper than not crying over a videogame or a movie.

I think you're just fine and nothing is wrong with you.

Don't worry, I'm like that about almost everything too. The only times I've actually cried about something is when a pet or person really close to me dies. I can honestly say that I've never cried over a movie, TV show, or even a video game, but I might feel a bit sad about it sometimes depending on what it is. I wouldn't say you're heartless, you're just able to handle sad things better than some people is all. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that doesn't cry over most things.

rcarter2 : Why are you so angry?  What can people possibly do that you would actually want to completely wipe them off the face of the earth?  Is it a control thing for you?  What's happening?

I was in the Marines for six years.  Killing people is the ugliest thing a human can do.  You're destroying a part of our culture.  You're doing a massive amount of damage when you kill someone and the ramifications of stopping that person from living reach parents, family, friends, work, neighborhoods and everyone else.

You don't just get to kill a person.  You wreck a family and you kill a little bit of everyone that knew them.

So.... what do people do that you want to do that?

No, you're not heartless. People in general can be a**h***s or they can be good people. Just because you don't cry at a couple Youtube videos doesn't mean "omg i'm sooo tough and not hartless".

It's all relative. For example, my older brother would sometimes like to choke me. Just out of nowhere, a guy who's seven years older than you is crushing your windpipe. Me and him, we see that as brotherly playing around- whilst others would see it as an act of unimaginable sadism. Same thing with being "heartless".

Guys, I think you misunderstood me.  I wasn't saying I'm super tough. I was wondering if that was a possible reason. Some of your guys' responses seem to make it look like I was saying I was the toughest person ever o.o
also,
warmaker : I'm pretty sure he was saying that in jest.

Everyone is different. I wouldn't worry too much about it. So fake video games and a dramatic yet embellished tale of tragedy didn't get your tears going. No big deal.

Well, I would ask another question.
Do tragic or "sad: moments in media affect you at all?
Do you feel upset for a character who something tragic has happened to in a video even if you don't cry?
If so, it defiantly may just emotional tolerance, but if not it still doesn't mean you are hearless.
It could be just a matter of immersion.
These things are happening on a T.V. or computer screen, so they just don't seem real to you.
Some people immerse themselves in what they are watching, as if these are real events happening.
Maybe you just don't do that.

I wouldn't consider it a problem unless you have no feelings whatsoever for anyone.
Including people in your life.
And I don't mean you cry (while crying is a normal reaction, you can certainly express empathy, sympathy, and sadness without it).
I mean feeling for them at all.
Otherwise...don't sweat it.

I doubt you're heartless. I know plenty of people who haven't cried at sad scenes in games and movies. I personally never took Titanic seriously and would never be sad. I have a friend who watched this show called Anohana and didn't cry and that show was extremely sad. Most people say they "literally" cried but rather got fuzzy eyed. If I haven't gotten my point across yet then I don't know what to say.

Defining heartless as lacking apathy in the same manner as someone with a mental condition, and considering the fact that you're asking if you do lack it, I can safely assume that you aren't, as much as you like you believe so.

Still, you could argue that you have a great sense of 'holding onto your feels' as you do feel sad, but not to the level of crying. Only time will tell if you are truly stone-hearted. People you know will pass away, how you handle that will determine your own answer to this question.
