Well, if a person is a collector, then that person keeps his collections in mint condition, in this case, video gmaes. If a person buys a lot of video games, in this case 50, and he plays them, then that person may be considered a hardcore gamer. If person who collects, but does not play 50 video games, then he is a collector. If a person collects and plays 50 video games, then he is a hardcore gamer. That is what I think.

I consider myself both a collector and gamer so I'll give my thoughts.
Having alot of games doesnt make one either a collector or a hardcore gamer, it depends on the content of what they have or possibly the condition.
I agree someone that collects the games and never opens or plays them at all is a collector only, but if they do that and play either a backup or spare copy then they are a gamer as well.
Though I don't think one needs to never play the game disks / carts to be a collector as I have played most all of my games and still consider myself a collector of certain series / genres.

To sum up, a collector can be a gamer and a gamer can be a collector.
It really has nothing to do with sheer number of games.

i have over 50 games but i don't play games that much, have played them all to the end though, so does that make me a hardcore gamer or a collector? i probably play about 10 hours a week.

Personally I would say it isn't necessarily that you are either.
In my opinion 10 hours gaming a week one wouldn't call you a hardcore gamer,
so it would depend on the reason why you keep your games.
If it's "just to have a collection" then you could be called a casual collector.
If it's because you rotate between which ones you play or because you couldn't be bothered selling them then you would be a casual gamer.

I could add to the definition of a hardcore gamer....

I'd consider someone a hardcore gamer(or just plain crazy) if they formed a line outside a store a day or so early just to get a game the moment it releases.

I think it also matters which 50 games you buy. While some games are simply more popular than others if you're just buying shovelware then no you are not a hardcore gamer and might not even be a collector (depending on what your collection is supposed to be) on the other side I own an Atari 2600 just to own it and have a piece of the history. I think that a hardcore gamer is someone who plays a lot of games and understands something deeper than the surface level of games and can appreciate gameplay, design, narrative, and the conventions of the game. Not all hardcore gamers are collectors are vice versa. I think that they arent mutually exclusive but they are both rather subjective.

Considering how many games are out there 50 is hardly a collecter. Hardcore gamer would be someone who plays games constantly every second of their freetime, how many games they have is not really a factor. Someone could break the world record high score of Super Hang On, now they would definately be hard core!

well depends, how many of those 50 said games have you actually played. if you've only played 1 or 2, then your more a collector. if you've played all of them or atleast 45 of them, then id say you value the games you buy and are happy with them.

saldex, I would say you're a gamer. But it also depends, do you value the condition of the games boxes and manuals highly?
As in, you make sure they stay clean, fresh and you wont buy the game unless it is "complete" (all books, slipcovers, etc)?

And of course my personal overview on gamer or collector depends on what console.
Cause if it's certain consoles then I don't consider people gamers at all...

DarkHyren, yes I do value the condition of the games boxes and manuals but not highly, and I don't bother if it was complete or not, also if the game was FREAKING AWESOME, I keep it until it 100% doesn't work, I kept 75% of the games I buy safe and sound(thats include NES, GBC, and many more).

Then (personally) I'd definately say you're a gamer, with maybe a bit of collector chucked in for good measure

If all you have is 50 games, that hardly qualifies as a collector, unless they are all rare or something. Hardcore is a completely different conversation. Hardcore means you do stuff like speed runs or regularly strive to beat the hardest games available.

The only way if your a collector is if you have morethan 100 rare or unusal games or if your obsessed with that game. I shouldent say this but you can't tell the diffrerence at 50 games.

Image upload: 300x304 totaling 19 KB's.

If I have 50 games, and I barely play them to the max, I'm a collector. On the other hand, if I have 50 games, and I play them often searching for secrets and playing through them with self-imposed challenges, then I'm a hardcore gamer. Though, you could be both at the same time but, as I always say, Your Mileage May Vary.
