I've never understood why Navi is so hated... To me she isn't annoying at all. Could someone explain why she's hated as much as she is?

They hate her because they are jealous. All the people that hate Navi are in love with Link and/or are very heavy fangirls/fanboys. Navi gets to be with Link 24/7 and everyone wishes they were Navi.

So people hate Navi because they are jealous.

But to the point of this thread, most people either hate Navi because their jumping on the band-wagon of hate and others because she is annoying to them. To me Navi only gets annoying when I've already played through that part of the game or because it's the tenth friggin time a row she's said the exact same samething.

I don't hate navi but it's more of a dislike. I don't like how she tells you the information that you already know or tells you pointless information.
"Hey! Press the action button to open a door! " or " Those Iron boots seem really heavy! I think you can sink to the bottom of a lake... or something." As a child this didn't bother me one bit but as soon as I got older I really started to get annoyed. Getting reminded every now and then to return back to the main quest  got on my nerves. However, I'm quite sure that all the hate is mostly exaggerated due to the media and people make it a huge deal when it's not.

I don't hate her. She maybe is sometimes a little bit annoying, but I think it's sometimes kind of funny when she says "Hey! Listen!". I don't know why but it just is.

I don't hate Navi but I think I understand why she comes across as nagging and annoying, She is basically a tutorial/hint that comes in the form of a character.

Games have one of two kinds tutorials and hints laid out throughout the game - One being in the form of pop up texts and the other as a character that helps explain the game mechanics to you and Navi is the latter.

The thing is that games nowadays have the option to turn the tutorial/hint system off and there is no such option in OOT.

It's not that I hate her, It's just that she's very annoying. Once you pass your first play through of ocarina you might not think so, but if you revisit it, knowing everything that there is to know about the game and you hear a "HEY LISTEN" about a hundred times it gets in your nerves. Sure, you can say no to talking to her and getting her advice but it's those two words that people are bugged about. Oh and hey, what about owl guy? He's fun right? If you press the wrong button he does the complete message once more even though you're just trying to skip it by clicking fast.

But, yeah, as I said before, both those characters have no reason to be hated, they are just annoying after the first couple of playthroughs. Oh, and another thing; give a real life example of the situation. If you know how to beat a game and know every single detail of it's 100% run because you've done it before wouldn't you be annoyed if someone was nagging you about things you "missed" or weaknesses of creatures you've beat a couple hundred times.

Munkkikahvi : Pretty much what I think of her.

She really isn't that annoying, especially on the first playthrough of the game, giving hints on how beating bosses and other enemies is extremely helpful, however if someone has played through the game multiple times I can understand it getting on their nerves, for me though, not really. She has become so famous for yelling LISTEN, HEY, that her being annoying is just exaggerated and nobody just wants to admit that shes actually not that bad.


Also sometimes when you lock on to an enemy WHY THE HECK does she yell BLUE!! Someone should make a thread about that, I think I'm going to .

gamerforlifeforever2 : As one person already stated, she usually becomes annoying after your first play-through of the game. You simply can not escape the constant "HEY!" "LISTEN!" that you receive periodically, without fail, throughout the game. It's like someone constantly nagging at you all day and night about anything you already know how to do many times over. This is not a situation anyone wants to go through at any point in their life, though it may be inescapable sometimes. Everyone has a Navi in their life. Either it's a parent, other family member, friend, or significant other. The funny thing is, to these people who nag at you, to them it's because they care about you doing wha tthey believe you should be doing for yourself.

Wow, I might've gone off topic a bit with all this talk of nagging characters.

Well, the reason most people find her annoying is because they haven't meet FI from Skyward Sword shown below.

Here are some point as to why most do though:


1#  She is very pestiferous:
Every time she has some "advice" she constantly says "HEY" and when you press C^ and want to look in first person, you are instead given some info by her, and she will remind you of your objective every 10 minutes, this can be very annoying to some players.

2# She is an under developed character/has no flavor in her speech.
You know why nobody complains about Tael from Majora's mask? It's because she doesn't constantly pester you, and she is actually a likable character because she actually has a personality, Something Navi lacks greatly. (this is partially because Translators were not that good with Dialogue pre-wind waker, and translation was not a big part of a game, I mean, you could play Super Mario bros just fine without a 1:1 Translation, or even without a translation at all.)

To go more into other Partners in the Zelda series, Ezlo for example isn't annoying, because his dialogue is well placed, smart, and he only informs you of important things when you first open your file.  Plus his interesting backstory as to how he is in the game.

KoRL was a wise old guy that was just cool to begin with, and was similar to Ezlo in a lot of ways.

Midna is annoying to some players, but that's because she's suppose to be that way at first. (not because she pesters constantly or lacks character)

So that's really why most dislike her.

We need to put FI on trial

gamerforlifeforever2 : I personally like navi but after awhile of just the word hey gets pretty old I mean come on they could have given her some other words to say not just hey. Now if they had done that navi wouldn't be hated as much you know it I know it everybody knows it

in the forest temple she  sees the twisted corridor and says this corridor is twisted or something

For me personally it depends on the day and if I've been play for a long time. Navi is informative, which is great. But like other's have said persistent and sometimes it's just annoying to have her pop up at all. I would not say that I hate Navi at all or ever, some times annoying, but still pretty cool. Seriously I could think of some games where a fairy helper would be awesome, besides she glows and that's cool. lol

You had so many people respond that I am Certain someone mentioned the following.

"Zelda" is intended to be an exploration game.
The idea of a guide holding your hand while you cross the street kind of defeats the idea of needing to learn the rules of the game.

You can't explore much or discover much if the game points out everything.

Compare the fans of "Skyrim" or "Fallout" to "Zelda64".

Every Zelda64 fan had the same kind of experience in around about the same time to play.

"Skyrim" or "Fallout" players all have different completeion times and All kinds of Varriances for the experience.

Granted I am Cheating by using games that could go on for 500 hours...BUT,,,

The Basics of the games and the argument is still the solid same.

Why have a Guide when the point is to get lost?

Wow I've got a lot of great responses on this topic. I guess I can see why so many people hate Navi now but she's still nowhere near as bad as Fi from Skyward Sword she's one of the most annoying video game characters ever. Any of you who haven't played that game yet but are planning on buying it at some point should be prepared to have to deal with a more annoying version of Navi on their quest.
