Like many people probably, I'm not posting to win Viz. I just want you to know that I'm rootin' for ya!  While I've been slaving away with my own work and deadlines, I've been thinking about yours.  I'm sorry you had the setbacks, but at least next time (so should you choose), you'll know better, right?

Good luck and keep being awesome!

Ludum Dare 30 /compo is over... and I didn't make the deadline by a long shot. I'll answer replies first and then get to my summary.

supernerd117 : I did the solo competition but if anyone on Vizzed decided to learn graphics and/or audio and/or coding and wanted to partner up in the future I'd be willing to listen. LD#31 is in December I believe.

jonathanzygorodi : Thanks for helping me out.

Sword legion : I'm still pretty new at this. Maybe you should show me how to use the tools

thing1 : looks like you'll have to wait to play it, it's quite unplayable at the moment. If you want the full explanation read the bottom of the post. I really appreciate you watching this thread for me.

Mistress : I figured the rule applied here. Oh well, I might look at wordpress a little harder. I've heard good stuff about it.

Singelli : Entering the competition was a good learning experience for me and it was fun for the most part. If you want to meet the Captain read further down. Thanks for all of your support.

Zelfore : Yeah, I got pretty frustrated when that happened and then tried going back to paint.net and it was like going back to kindergarten. Then I remembered what my dad always told me, computers are there to work for you. I started researching deeper and found out how to export working versions of all the graphics that were made.

Eidetic Memory: I've got a bunch of graphics, nothing playable unfortunately. It was a good learning experience.

********************************

The main problem I had was that I knew paint.net wasn't going to give me graphics that I wanted so I switched to Inkscape several days before the event started. Once I started actually working with it in-depth it had a really sharp learning curve. I can now say that I'm very comfortable using it and getting results. I'm going to show you some of what I got done - I'm really sorry that I don't have something for you to play. If you want to see playable games that were submitted before the deadline go to Ludum Dare

Once I finished with the bulk of the animations, I was exhausted. I had spent so much energy on that stuff that I opened up Stencyl and had a brainfart. I just kind of poked around at it for about an hour and then I realized that my focus was off because I had been up for 30+ hours. I slept 5 hours and was a little more comfortable using the program but I ran into the same problem I had with Inkscape. I just didn't have very much experience with it. I spent the remaining hours of the dare trying to get a start screen put together.

This whole thing was a really positive experience for me. I basically skipped diving into the deep end and instead jumped in the ocean to deal with the sharks. I'm now really comfortable with these types of graphics. My goal is to continue working on my game until it's done. Maybe when that happens I'll be just as familiar with Stencyl as I am Inkscape. When it's done I'll let everyone know and you can give me some feed back?

Thanks everybody so much for taking some interest in this. I'll keep this thread open to see if anyone wants to comment on this post but the Viz payout is over. I'll be sending it shortly to those that were the first to bump this each time.

thephantombrain : As a matter of fact, my family just signed me up for a video game creation course (early Christmas present). If I learn enough, I'd be glad to team up with you in the future! But there are some genres I stay away from, such as Horror.

supernerd117 : Yeah, let me know how the course goes. I'm genuinely interested in what they teach. If you make a thread about it, I'm requesting a summons up front.

That might be cool to team up - some of the /jam (team compo) submissions that are being submitted today look amazing and/or expansive. In another week or two when I finish my game I'm gonna go look at it all in-depth. Maybe see if I can find out how to improve my stuff.

jonathanzygorodi : Maybe a week or two

thing1 : I'm making steady progress but I've got some stuff coming up this week that might slow me down. Ballpark estimate 2 weeks.

thephantombrain :

Even though you didn't get to submit it, I think that it's always a good idea to push oneself for something like this- which you did.

I bet you found out that you're a lot faster than you thought, eh?

Me, teach you?

haha

I still can't get the music making tool to work.

But If I do, then I'll let you know.

Dark knight of the blackened sun. I am Sword Legion, one of many. My mask is thick, and my armor is strong. All the more necessary in a world such as this. . .

Sword legion : I found out a lot of things with all of that.

I got the start screen, the storyline sequence and the first level done before I realized that I it was essentially a Pac-man clone. That would have been OK to finish but I began to feel limited by my lack of programming knowledge. That's when I decided to continue my Javascript course at Codeacademy.com. I probably won't finish the game honestly but just consider it a learning experience.

Many of the games that were submitted to LD were so amazing because of the programming knowledge of the creators. I want that. To build something amazing.

Yeah, let me know about that tool. Sometimes it seems like there aren't enough hours in the day for experimentation and those music programs are far down on my list at the moment.
