Back in 1985 Super Mario bros was released and ended up saving the video game industry as we know it. Now fast forward to 1989 and Nintendo once again saved the video game industry this time the saved the portable games thanks to the gameboy and a little game called tetris. Of coarse although being able to play Super Mario Bros on the road as kids was like a dream come true especially on long car rides. However how does this game hold up today.

                                                                                                graphics
This is probably on of the few Mario games that graphically hasn't aged very well its not all the games fought though but mostly the hardware and memory space at the time.  However if you go by 1989 standards then I would say the graphics were good for its time, with that being said the other game in the Mario land series is vastly improved and a lot better then this on

                                                                                                 sound
Although the music might not be as well known as most other Mario music out there I'd say considering the hardware this is some of the best work of the gameboys sound hardware as possible plus the main land theme is really catchy. The rest of the sounds is just what you would expect from a Mario game at the time from stomping goombas to hitting coin blocks.

                                                                                                game play
Now for the most important part of a Mario game is how well it plays and how great the levels are. This game is very different then any Mario game before or after it. The levels go way beyond what is in Mario like a Chinese temple cavern type of thing and bowser (or king koopa) is nowhere to be found in this game. Also instead of swimming there is a submarine level that I actually think is better then the swimming levels in the original game. Also not sure if this is due to hardware troubles or if it was done on purpose but the koopa turtles do not go flying off walls after you kick them instead the have a explosion with a small blast radius.

                                                                                                negatives
I don't personally have any negatives about this game other than the fact that while the game is fun unlike the other Mario games out there it is showing its age. If I had anything to complain about its the fact that this game is short especially compared to its sequel. However it is a portable game made in 1989 and the later levels are challenging enough to make up for it.

                                                                                                 overall
If your willing to crack out that old gameboy once again and have somehow never played this game you need to play it if your a Mario fan. While it has aged a lot more then Super Mario Bros there is still lots of fun to be had here for Mario Fans of all ages. Although I wouldn't put this game in my top 10 Mario games I do enjoy this game a lot and have lots of memories with it.

Good review man. I have played this game and I have never finished, it's pretty difficult but I still liked it. It's good you compared to standards back then, those aren't as high as the ones now. I like that you put in negatives but I would have done positives as well then. I don't have any comments about the rest of your review, it's a good review for somebody who's just getting started. Good work

Yargisher: Thanks for the review! I love this game. It's one of my favorite portable Mario games. Those moments when you complete a world...classic. Princess turns into a monster...I live for those moments. And the game feels tight, too. I much prefer this game over Super Mario Bros.
