Last night, a bad chemical was put into a lot of Ohio's tap water, making many things inconvenient. Every restaurant in the areas with water with the bad chemical is closed. Everyone has to use hand sanitizer in order to not get the chemical in their hands. Everyone has to use bottled water on their toothbrush not to get the chemical in their mouth. My swimming lesson got cancelled.

No one knows how long the tap water will have that chemical, so people have been going to stores and buying a large amount of bottled water. My dad had to go to a store about a 45-minute drive away just to get some of it. He bought 10 packs, each with 20 bottles. That's 200 water bottles!

PacmanandMariofan : I HATE to break this to you, but those bottles of water come from the same tap as the contaminated water, but you said the contamination started last night, so you should be fine, check JUST to be sure.

Anyways sorry for the big disaster, who is to blame for this (hopefully not the workers, I'd hate for jobs to be lost) and I hope you don't get sick

-best wishes

Cradily is love : It doesn't matter if it comes from the same spot. What matters is the filtration and treatment method. Your typical water treatment plant for towns and cities are more for killing microorganisms and neutralizing the harmful chemicals they use to do that (lye and chlorine). But they aren't good at in depth filtration. But your typical bottled water plants use reverse osmosis procedure. In this case, the ONLY chemical that comes out is dihydrogen monoxide (water). So unless this chemical has a molecular makeup which is identical to water (which is not possible because that would just make it water), it won't be in bottled water. Reverse osmosis is what they put in space stations to recycle astronauts urine to give them virtually unlimited supply of drinking water.

But that is very inconvenient indeed. Not to mention costly for everyone. Do you happen to know exactly what it was that got into the water?

Cradily is love : No one knows who did it.

rcarter2 : That's a huge relief, I was worried that my bottled water contained the bad chemical too. Sadly, I don't know exactly what got into the water, but many others do. My mom knows it's something that starts with micro.

Ai man, it really sucks to hear that. We, the Dutch, have the best tap water in the world and I can't imagine a life without great water. There was once a time though that the water here wasn't usable for 3-4 days as it was said that it contained bacteria from animals poop or something like that, so we had to cook our water and bottled water was really useful back then.

Portland, Oregon, 50 miles from me, earlier this year had a nasty boil order because the tap water was found to have six times the legal limit of e.coli bacteria, IIRC. The boil order lasted for a week. Not good for a city with so many breweries!

The town I grew up in had tap water issues too... there were a lot of times, especially during the winter for some reason, that the tap water would come out with a gray tinge to it, and it tasted really metallic for some reason.

PacmanandMariofan : If it started with micro, it would almost certainly be bacterial. In that case, you definitely don't have to worry about the bottled water. Reverse osmosis purifies water on a molecular level. No way any organism could get past that.

Its not that unusual. Not in mny nations anyway. What is unusual is they didnt try to cover it up. In many nations there arent very strict guidlines so standards are allowed to slip. In your situation its good they actualy communicated with their customer. Although I would think compensation is in order.

juuldude :
The best?where do you get that?Best tap water is generally defined by the purity (health standards and regulations) and the mineral content (e.g if its come through the hills.
By all accounts, countrys like norway, france, italy sweden, scotland etc have the best water, due to rigourous checks, and the fact the water comes down through the mountains. Considering the fact these nations bottle their water and sell it to other countrys, that should tell you something.

rcarter2 : It's microsystin. I'm not sure if I spelled that right.

The mayor is saying the water is now safe to drink, but my family is going to wait a while. It's definitely safe to take a shower in and wash your hands in.

Oh. The toxin released from blue algae. Yeah, that is not good stuff. That can not only be harmful to you, but can really alter the ecosystem in that particular body of water. Don't know why I didn't thing of that, since you said you lived in Ohio. That is one of the areas prone to that.
