There are politicians out there that want to raise the minimum wage. Some want to raise it to $10 and hour, some to $15 an hour, etc. What do you think about this?

I think it is a terrible idea. Sure it is better for one employee, but it will decrease the amount of jobs available because the company will not be able to afford to pay as many employees. Not only that, but some companies (such as stores and fast food restaurants) will replace somw of their employees with machines, since the machines don't cost them anything other than the initial payment, and it will save the companies money.

What do you think about the minimum wage? Should it be raised?

tgags123 : I both agree with you, but instead I feel they should raise their hours WITHOUT lowering pay, and maybe improve some of the "benefits" as a lot of people can't live off of 40 hours a week with 7.50 as that's 300 a week without taxes deducted, and the average is 30% so a person is bringing home an average of 210 a week, this is a pathetic amount and there are only 2 solutions: Raise the minimum wage slightly (not to a drastic amount like 15, maybe a dollar or 2 more?) Or raise the hours from 40 to 60, it's still not a lot of money, but it's more than it would be from raising the minimum wage to 10$ an hour, and seriously 60 hours a week still leaves with 108 hours and if you sleep an average of 8 hours a day, that leaves you  with 52 hours of free time, it may not seem like a lot, but at least you can afford to eat and wear clothes.

The entire reason anyone wants to raise minimum wage is because the cost of living is simply too much today.

You CANNOT get by in today's world on minimum wage unless you are living with roommates or your parents.

Rather than raise minimum wage (which would cause a couple of issues I'm not ok with), I have a more logical idea.

How about we lower the cost of living? By lowering it to a level where it is not only possible, but simple, for someone to actually get by on minimum wage, you eliminate the contingent of people who want to raise minimum wage.

I'm for more money, but more money also means more taxes, and more taxes means more money for the politicians, which means less money for what's actually important. Living.

tgags123 : I agree with you first post, but it's not just that. If they were to raise minimum wage then everything price wise would most likely raise, and cause more inflation. No more dollar menu at the Mickey D's

Thats higher than the current minimum wage of any state.
There is a thing called a living wage, a wage thats actually enough to live a decent life off.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20204594

The current U.S minimum wage is $7.25, and there is no way id work for that low.
Minimum wage for over 21's here is $10.71 an hour.

NAtions by wage (dark being higher).
Its something that needs addressed in the USA, but in a way that doesent rattle the economy, perhaps a 15 cents rise year on year.

legacyme3 :
How exactly do you propose lowering the cost of living?Especially in the USA, where that would be seen as government 'interference'?

Minimum wage should be increased no matter what, as the cost of living is always increasing you need more income just to live even if that means taking on two jobs or scrimping around until you're safe with money.

thenumberone :

Hell if I know, if it was that easy, then it would have been done from public pressure alone.

I just know the answer isn't raising minimum wage given our government. Raise income and all taxes would go up.

It's a fantastic idea. What with inflation and all, it would only be logical to raise the minimum wage so that people can actually afford to live properly, and seeing as lowering the cost of living is extraordinarily difficult, it would be the best fix, assuming we can somehow get the government to not raise taxes alongside the increased minimum wage. Of course there are obvious downsides to anything and using food stamps or some sort of welfare system to supplement lacking wages would be a better idea.

Raising minimum wage is an awful idea. Those who know about economics know that doing so would only further increase inflation and make the economy even worse than it is now. If a company can't afford to pay their workers $7.50 an hour, what makes you think they can pay the same number of workers $10 an hour? Companies would have to fire workers, leaving those people jobless and minus one paycheck. The companies themselves would have less money and have to charge more for their products/services, just like every other company in America if minimum wage was raised. Then nobody could afford the products/services, and the economic situation would become even worse as everyone would have even less money. Why would we want to make our economy even worse?

It is easy to sit back and say, "These huge American corporations can afford to pay more for everyone!  Everyone should make more money because the huge corporations are raking in massive profits."

That's an easy card to play especially if you're not from the United States and you don't live here.  What you don't see is the small business.

Small businesses companies owned by one person or limited liability corporations owned by only a few people.  They only employee a few people and they generate almost half of the United States's GDP.  In fact, over 99% of all business in the U.S. is small business.  Almost 90% of all businesses in the U.S. employ fewer than 20 workers, according to the SBE Council

http://www.sbecouncil.org/about-us/facts-and-data/

They create jobs.  They create innovation and technological advancement.  They drive our economy much more than Ford, GM, Wal-Mart, Boeing, Google, Starbucks, and others.

I added a few more interesting facts about non-employer businesses and small business.  They do most of the work and see very little profit.  These are the folks hanging on by the skin of their teeth and barely able to make ends meet.  They can't afford to pay people another three or four dollars an hour.

If you have ten people and you have to pay them $4.00 more per hour over a 40 hour work week, you spend:

10 x 4 x 40 = $1,600 more per week and you get nothing in return.  Over a year, with only 50 weeks paid to those people, that's an extra $80,000 I have to spend in wages that see no return for my investment.  How could the average business, which grosses $44,000 (forbes.com) afford that?

tgags123 : "Its something that needs addressed in the USA, but in a way that doesent rattle the economy, perhaps a 15 cents rise year on year." Jobs certainly would not be halved then. Also, take a look at California. One of the highest minimum wage in the US. You don't see jobs bombing at a tremendous rate over there, do you? Oregon's wage also rises with inflation in small increments. These increases don't destroy jobs, and they seem to be working rather well to curb some of the issues plaguing everyone else.

For the love of all things money, do not move minimum wage. People should live with roommates, spouse, whatever. There are also places that don't cost $800 a month to live where you can still be paid $7.25. Raise minimum wage does nothing but spiral prices until the same equilibrium is achieved.

thenumberone :

Where I live, gasoline is $3.20, one dozen large eggs are less than $2, lettuce, bread, peanut butter, and everything else are really cheap. Your £6.31 is necessary because prices are high in the UK. The island has to import a lot of things because it is very urban and not very large. My $7.25 an hour will buy me pretty close to the same stuff. If I lived in NY, prices would be higher and I wouldn't be able to get gas for $3.20, etc. Except NY's minimum wage is above the federal minimum, closing in at $9.00 an hour.

You would work for $7.25 and be happy with the bang for your buck.

£3.20 for what?How much.
And actually, the cost varies here too. For instance London is far more expensive than most city's.

"The island has to import a lot of things because it is very urban and not very large."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18623096
"The urban landscape accounts for 10.6% of England, 1.9% of Scotland, 3.6% of Northern Ireland and 4.1% of Wales."
"In urban England, for example, the researchers found that just over half the land (54%) in our towns and cities is greenspace - parks, allotments, sports pitches and so on."
"In England, "78.6% of urban areas is designated as natural rather than built."

Urban map:

You are falling for a common misconception. Equally, in saying Britain is not very big.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24083162
"At the top end we usually define the very large islands as continents and from a geographical point of view there are only four of those: Eurasia-Africa, America, Antarctica and Australia.

"So if we include those as mega-islands, Britain would actually be the lucky 13 - the 13th largest land mass on the planet."
"If you don't include those continental land masses, Britain scores higher. It's ninth"

You are comparing the size to the largest states. Britain isn't small, the USA, Russia, China, India etc are just abnormally large.

As for relying on imports, so does the united states, we also export a very great deal. Scotland for example, exports more food than it imports. And I can get a dozen eggs for not a lot over $2, so the difference isnt as great as you assume.
I would not work for $7.25, and I would not be happy if I had to.

And given that Scotland has the largest Oil reserves in Europe, we could soon see a drop in fuel prices depending on the upcoming vote. As it stands it is much more expensive than in america though, mainly because we send most of it down south.

And given that Scotland has the largest Oil reserves in Europe, we could soon see a drop in fuel prices depending on the upcoming vote. As it stands it is much more expensive than in america though, mainly because we send most of it down south.

I did not know Britain was so rural. I have been fooled. Stupid American education...

And drill the tar out of Scotland. Even send it south, the price of gasoline in Europe is very high compared to everywhere else. The UK could make a pretty penny right now.

And while you wouldn't be happy with $7.25 an hour, I don't think you'd be less happy with £6.31. Neither of those buys a whole lot. If we removed the cost of petrol from the equation, I do think that the UK would have more bang for the minimum wage salary, but as it currently stands it's pretty much equal.

The biggest problem with the minimum wage is we have 3.
1 for over 21's (6.31), over 18's(5.03) and under 18's (somewhere around (3.27).
Those are in pounds so its not as low as it looks, but paying people less on age isnt fair, and £5 an hour is a crap wage.

I guess they're assuming 21 and under live with parents. Idk, I don't think I mind age-based minimum wage that much in theory. The really skilled 18 year old wouldn't be paid the £4.90 (or whatever it is) because he would be skilled enough to merit decent pay. However, bottom of the barrel 18 year old who works at BurgerBurger probably doesn't need to be paid more than that tiny starting pay.

I understand your point: minimum wage doesn't provide for decent living. However, I don't think that's the point of minimum wage. The hourly floor is simply so if someone works ~20 hours a week, they can still survive without stealing anything.  Working at $7.25 here for the entirety of one's life would mean no retirement, and there will come a time when you are forced to retire. It would put you in a bind, to say the least.

The problem is its not right paying less based on age. Experience sure, but age, no. 2 people doing the same job, to the same standard, should not receive different wages.

The way I see it, a low minimum wage is a really bad thing. It's been brought up several times that high minimum wages mean that businesses, especially small ones cannot afford employees, making the business smaller and cutting down on available jobs. While that works for places where the cost of living is low, it does not work for urban environments where the cost of living is high. A low minimum wage, combined with sneaky business hours (Keeping employees under a certain amount of hours per pay period so they can avoid paying for benefits) means that a person living in an urban place may need to work two or more jobs to be able to stay on their feet, meaning that there are even LESS jobs for others, not to mention the severe health risks of working that much.

I live in British Columbia, Canada. Here, we have a minimum wage of $10.25 ($9.43 USD, 7.14 Euro) or $8 + tips, and that's low considering the rest of the country. It amazes me that people in other countries can get by with such low minimum wages when I see hard working individuals struggling to pay rent on their minimum wage job. It's not because they're lazy, it's not because they don't spend their money well, it's because the cost of living and the minimum wage do not scale together.

think about the places that pay minimum wage fast food restaurants and retail stores so if they raised minimum wage then the prices of these places merchandise would also raise not to mention they would hire less people due to the fact they want to spend less money so in the end i think it would make things worse in the long run
