Characters - I'm cool with the newcomers announced so far. I'll definitely use Little Mac, Greninja, Pac-Man, Mii Brawler, maybe Mii Gunner, and maybe Palutena. The only character I'm not too impressed with is Rosalina & Luma. It seems very complicated to learn, and there's just something about the moveset that bothers me.
Stages - All of these look cool. I like how they're putting different stages into each game, and I especially like the Final Destination mode for each stage. Some of the stages in previous games were pretty crappy/unfair (Poke Floats, Fourside, Warioware... the warioware stage was fun but cheap). Another incentive to buy both games.
Items - All of the items look awesome. All of them. The Blue Shell, the X-Bomb, and the Rocket Belt are probably the new items I'm most hyped for. I also like the redesigns of some of the items. The Motion-Sensor Bomb now looks awesome, the Bumper now looks awesome, and the Home-Run Bat... The Home-Run Bat looks really cool now.
All Other Goodies - The Smash Run thing for the 3DS looks awesome. It looks like it will probably get old for awhile while doing it on single player, but it looks like it'll be awesome with Wi-Fi. But something that excites me even more than Smash Run is...
The customization! It'll be cool to change characters' stats and moves a little. You could make Bowser one of the fastest characters (which would be pretty bad since he's a huge target still), or you could make Sonic one of the strongest (and slowest) characters. I also like how they're implementing the customization with Palutena and the Mii Fighters. Each of them get brand new moves/movesets with customization, and the Miis get new costumes.
And the moveset customization (like with Mario's Fireball, Fast Fireball, and Fire Orb)? Also really cool. I hope they find a way to do this with every character. It'll be cool making an ultra-powerful Falcon Punch or a quick and wimpy fireball.
I'm not too excited for the Amiibos (previously called NFP, short for Nintendo Figurine Platform), though. I'm not entirely sure why...
I am extremely excited for this game. I play Melee or Brawl (almost always Project M rather than Brawl, though) almost daily. They're both my favorite video games of all time. Melee was good for competitive fighting, while Brawl was good for lots of variety... and the Subspace Emissary.
