Hi! It's been a while since I've been on the site. Just wanted a little advice so I figured why not post on the forum,
So I am going back to my local community college in August to go back to work on my Visual Arts major.
I really love art, drawing/sketching and painting being my favorite mediums, and I think I would like to make a living off of art one day.
But I've been told by many friends that it's impossible to make a living off of art.
I don't want to believe them of course, because art is what I'm best at, and I enjoy going to galleries and looking at other people's art too, its really fun for me.
I think maybe I could sell my art to galleries to make money or one thing I've always wanted to do, is make weapon/armor designs for RPG style video games, as that is my favorite genre of video games, some examples being Champions of Norrath and Champions Return to Arms, though my recent favorite game is Dark Souls(Which I have not finished yet, pretty sure this is the best game I've ever played; its a MASTERPIECE lol).
Anyway, what do you guys think? Could I possibly make a living off of art?
Reply with any suggestions or advice, it's much appreciated!

You can make a living off of art, but not if you're only relying on skill alone.

You're probably going to need a good social network of friends and acquaintances. Actually, I think you may need a good social network for any of those high paying career jobs out there.

If it isn't already one of your general requirements, I recommend taking some sort of communications class. It's one thing to be able to talk to friends and acquaintances, but it's definitely another to be able to talk to potential clients and/or employers.

Business and opportunity are driven by more than talent and skill.  Take business classes, math classes, and take opportunities to meet people and owners of local companies.  There are thousands of people who have the same degree as you, the same skill sets, and the same talent, more or less.  When you start meeting everyone and exposing your work to them, you can start finding suitable employment and success.

I recommend joining either the Chamber of Commerce or Young Businessperson Club or something like that.  Begin marketing and socializing and connecting with people well in advance of graduation.  That way you can walk into excellent opportunities by the time you're done with school.  Many people never do this and end up at McDonald's the first few years after college.

There is nothing wrong with working at McDonald's except that it is probably not what you want to do with your life since you're artistic.  But it is an art form to make the perfect burger.  MmmMMMMMMM!

If you are going to try to make a living off of art, you might as well want to do something with writing because they pretty much go hand in hand and if you do both and work really hard, you can pull it off.

Well, I have a lot to think about now..
Being social hasn't always been my strong-suit but I'm definitely going to try to open up instead of being quiet all the time lol
I added Acting 1 to my class schedule as an elective which I think will help me get out of my shell.
Also added it because I've always had an interest in performing arts as well as improvisation/comedy(sorry I forgot to mention that when writing my post! oops XD )
And in reply to zanderlex, I do happen to enjoy writing, though sporadically, for example I might go for weeks at a time without writing, and then after a while I'll suddenly get inspired to write and I end up working on poetry, essays, or short stories for an entire day(or night).
I am trying to write more often though, I plan on writing an essay on philosophy since that is another one of my interests.

Oh well, I'm still young and I'll probably have plenty of time while I'm attending school to think about all this, and eventually figure out what I want to do with my life. Thanks everyone for the advice
