juuldude : Oh yes, they were very nice an extravagant. The beaches were mostly clean, water was really blue, and the people (at least where I've visited) were generally welcoming and nice.

I would say german, because then I would be able to learn all the german dialects as well like swedish, finnish, norweigan etc.

The scandinavian area in europe interests me.

I know this is very unusual, but I have always wanted to learn Japanese. I don't know why, but I have always been fascinated by the Japanese Culture, and language. So for those reasons I have chosen this language.

I would like to learn any one of the following - Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, Arabic, Turkish and Japanese. French is another one. There are many places I want to visit and it would be nice to know the language. It would be good to go to other peoples countries and speak with them in their language instead of relying on them to speak English. It's also nice to be multi lingual. I'd like to go Spain (Spanish), France and Canada (French), Turkey (Turkish), Egypt (Arabic), Japan (Japanese) - I also watch and like Pokémon. I watch it in English (dubbed) and the original Japanese. I don't understand Japanese but I watch it anyway. It has subtitles.

I would love to learn Latin, as my very distant ancestors hailed from Italy. I am also interested in the culture of Norway, so I would love to learn Norwegian.

I'd like to learn Latin. Sure, it's a dead language, but it would be cool to learn.

When I was in Kindergarten through 2nd grade, one of my best friends was deaf. We hung out a lot in and out of school. I got to be pretty fluent in sign language. However, I moved after second grade. With no means to communicate in sign language anymore, I slowly lost it. I remember very little. I would love to become fluent again.

I have two languages what I'd like to learn. I'd really like to learn spanish, because it's beautiful language and I want to visit there someday, but I don't have enough money to travel far away. Second language is italian. It's really beautiful language too and it would be fun to visit there someday. I have seen many pictures of these countries and the sights are absolutely beautiful.

nreid1 : Sounds great! It's hard to find good beaches sometimes but there aren't any beaches where I live with blue water, our water is more brown-ish as there are many algae in the water.

bobq : Why does that area interest you? Is it because of friends or family? I have heard from one of my teachers that German can help you learn a Scandinavian language and vice versa.

darthyoda : Well, it's not so unusual anymore. There are more people in this thread who would rather learn Japanese because of the games, anime and culture instead of Chinese while it's the most spoken language in the world, so this has surprised me.

squirtleturtle : Wow, that's a lot of useful languages, which of these would you like the most? And why would you learn Dutch or German if you aren't thinking of visiting Germany or the Netherlands?

Custoskede : Those are interesting choices you made there. Latin has many words that can be found back in European languages, and especially in Italian. I believe that Norway has a great economy and is one of the happiest countries in the world.

DeathKid3 : Any reasons for that? There are other dead languages like Ancient Greek, so is Latin just the most fascinating for you?

rcarter2 : Are you still friends with that guy? Maybe you could visit him once or you could chat on the internet. Sign language can be used everywhere which is very smart.

Flame534 : I've never been to Spain but I've heard positive things about the country from friends. And Italy indeed has so many different and nice places. The cities and the nature are both beautiful.


Sorry if I ask so many questions guys, it's just that I'm interested to hear why people want to learn a certain language.

I learned (in the most random class ever) in this class I took called gothic horror stories (a gothic history class combined with literature) that there were wars in europe when the roman empire was trying to spread their power and control all over europe. They tried to fight the germans but the germans held their own, which is why countries near germany are all german dialects (their own spin on the german language). I really didnt think I would learn anything of value in that class, but I did (even though I slept through it a number of times).

Basically scandinavia at the time was german territory and they whooped the roman empire so rome stayed away from the german territory.

juuldude : Yeah, it pretty much seems to be the same story in certain places, especially urban areas. Heavy pollution from all sources make their way onto the  beaches and leave an impact. I guess this is why the good beaches are often found far away from these areas.

juuldude : I moved after 2nd grade. So there really wasn't any real way for me to see him again. He has a very common name, so finding him is not going to happen. Besides, finding a friend I haven't seen or spoken to since 2nd grade (18 years ago) and contacting him because I want to relearn sign language feels weird to me.

I would like to learn Italian. I think it is a beautiful language and I really like to watch Italian TV-series. I watched TV-series named "Lovely Elisa's daughter" when it was shown in TV and it was very good. <3

I'm currently taking a Spanish class.

But I really want to learn Japanese!

bobq : That's true, Germany is one of the countries they couldn't take over completely. The same goes with the Netherlands, but that's mostly because they weren't used to the swamps around that time here. Sounds like an awesome class to have.
If you ever take a look at European languages you will indeed see that the southern part of Europe has languages that more resemble Latin, while the northern part more resembles German languages.

nreid1 : Yeah, it's a shame that some humans are incredibly filthy. It's not too hard to throw our garbage away right, or to turn down the lamps a little bit?

rcarter2 : Well, I didn't mean that you could try to find him just because so you could learn the language again, but also to have fun and such. But on the other side, if he's difficult to find and you weren't the biggest of friends with him, you don't have to.
