Well! Here's for another review, and a platforming game I've actually beaten! That's rather rare. This game, the first in the two-part Chronicles of Sorrow, is a standout piece in the Metroidvania genre. It also has my favorite protagonist in the series ever and they really need to bring Soma back and oh my god, but I will refrain from gushing over how awesome he is to keep this review clean. Sorta refrain. Yeah.
So, first things first, graphics! Graphics shmaphics. I don't care much for graphics, but I cannot deny they can help or hinder a game. I'm a person of style over realistic-ness, but this game blends both together in a mirage of well-put-together stages, excellent character designs, and fun stuff to look at. My only miff is that some of the enemies are just recolors of other enemies, just harder to kill. This is rather evident when you run into a Siren. The Sirens look like Harpies. Which is what they are a recolor of. Yup. My rating for graphics is a 9.
Now, the music. This got some gooooood musics. Oh and the sound does its job just fine, but musics!?This stuff is pretty good. Not the best per se, but I like the composition, the remixes, and the boss themes alike. They do their job well. My rating for the sound in this game is a 8.
And now, how much fun is the game? Do you take pleasure in beating up mundane monsters, yelling at the screen while your friends sit next to you also yelling at the screen, and finding secrets, and beating things up, and finding secrets, and finding better ways to do things a la beating Skeldrich with the bow and arrows as opposed to using the sand wand? Well, this is a good game for you. It does have those moments where you want to chuck the keyboard/Game Boy Advance/controller at the window (lookin' at you, room full of ghost dancers,) but the overall fun-ness of the game is the much fun. Also, stealing abilities is so much fun.Just make sure to pick up a Zombie soul on the way to the Headhunter. Fun-ness is a 8.
Story! I got this game without that pamphlet that tells you you're you-know-what-if-you-beat-the-game, so when I got to that point I was all like whaaaaaaaat. Also, Soma acts like any teenager who suddenly got powers in an abandoned hellhole would. With utter confusion and hacking. And protecting your not-girlfriend is a must. Also, Arikado! Worst disguise, man. Pronouncing your name funny does not count. Relatively good-ish story, has room for work. I give the story a 7.
Aaaaaand the depth. Two words, SECRETS ERRYWHERE. I give the depth a 10.
Finally, the difficulty. Really ridiculously hard three fourths of the time, somewhat not hard the last one fourth. goshdarn ghost dancers (excuse my language.) I give the difficulty a 9.
My final score is, with the power of maths, 8.5. Wow, the calculator actually put it out rather cleanly! In other words, PLAY THIS GAME SOMA IS BEST PROTAG HE IS ALSO FASHOINABLE Well!
