what do like the most the classic 2d zelda games or the modern 3d ones they are both good and but both of them had it downsides like the 2d games non existing platforming and the 3d games with frustrating battle system at least for me

currently the 3d games are more commun but the 2d games have a huge impact and we still see them as handheld titles every while

as for me i prefer the 2d games but hey thats just me

Easily the 3D titles. The funny thing is, the battles are the reason I like the 3D Zelda titles. They add a lot of depth, and at times, awesome sword play action. I also like the platforming in ways too.

The 2D are good as well, but far less immersive. I can play both though.

Easily the 3D Zelda titles. Hands down. You cannot easily beat a 3D title, at least not unless you have some sort of visual novel aspect (at least for me). Besides, the battle are far more interesting. Despite the purported difficulty of said battles, they add more depth, realism, and immersion to the titles. Without the 3D, I would simply feel as if I was playing some sort of lame game flash game. Do not get me wrong. I have nothing wrong with 2D titles. However, the quality just feels to be significantly less when I play a 2D game versus a 3D game. Usually. Of course, I did mention visual novels, and if they could make a visual novel Zelda, I would gladly end up choosing the 2D version.

I strongly agree with sop281, though there is one thing I would like to add that is making the 2D get an edge. In the new Zelda game a link between worlds, it runs on base platform of 2D but on the 3DS, it has managed to put in 3D elements that have made it as enjoyable as the fully 3D games, but still lacks the complete depth that holds you in with cuts scenes and overall game play.

I bought the game and kept it.
So.....
Yes I liked the leap from 2D to 3D.
But,,,
I have to be honest. "The Occorina Of Time" was a bit too short.
Previous Zelda Hits gave just a bit more time and length for the dollar.
Plus there was still a ton of uncovered potential for the 2D Universe of games to tap.
At the time the PS1 was Experimenting and succeeding with 3D Games.
Nintendo needed to Compete.
That's pretty much all I think about now.
The story ("A Link To The Past" was better.),
The limitations on Links abilities, (Why could we not use the hookshot while falling? Why not give Link a Jump Button? Who cares if he does a jump automatically at a ledge.),
The Broken Sword Quest (Why?),
The Extention of the Hookshot Powerup (Why not have it that long from the start?).
There are too many things that just seem incomplete.
I honestly did not care about any of the characters. Not even Link.
The game was good but it felt like something was missing the entire time I was playing it.

Long Story short? I think they could have done more with a 2D to 2.5D Game released before The Occorina of Times 3D adventure.
The Lore of the "Behind the Scenes" on the Occorina Of Times 3D adventure pointed to Zelda Not being ready to make the leap to 3D yet.
Though it was just a thought. (Been ages since I thought of it.)
Thanks for the Nostalgia Trip.
Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

kurslash : I play both. I'll say the 3D Zelda games are much better for the epic sword attacks and boss titles. 2D games are still good for me

3D. The 3D games are less frustrating, more fun (than some 2D games), have decent stories, and have more interesting over worlds. When I explore Ocarina of Time, or Majora's Mask, I feel much less annoyed than when I play, say, Link's Awakening.

Gamin'Gal : I have to agree with your comment about the frustration. The 2D overhead view really made for a frustrating experience sometimes in world navigation. The gameplay made up for those times, but if you can eliminate the bad aspects in a game without ruining the good, why not do it?

I also agree with what orionfox said about the Jump button. Literally every single time I sit down with a new Zelda game, I find myself frustrated with the lack of an ability to jump. Yeah, auto-jump with ledges is a great concept, and one that they should keep, but why not give us an ability to jump on flat ground? It could potentially improve the (already great) combat mechanics quite a bit.

The real downside with 2D Zelda titles is the lack of depth on areas on the map. Other than that, and far more limited battle abilities (Darknuts are no fun in 2D ), 2D is great. I still have to stick with 3D though.

Although I like both formats for Zelda games, and I don't view any Zelda games as bad in any way (we do not speak of the dark times), I prefer the 3D Zelda games just for Majora's Mask and Wind Waker, and NOT for Ocarina of Time. Besides the gameplay being quite favorable in Ocarina of Time, it didn't offer much to me, it being my 3rd least favorite Zelda title, only beaten by Oracle of Seasons and Phantom Hourglass. However, Majora's Mask's superior dungeons, characters, and sidequests and Wind Wakers superior combat and exploration make the 3D titles stand out for me.

I swear, if anyone makes a remake of Majora's Mask in Wind Waker's game engine, they will become the new god in my eyes.
