I'll start by saying that I'm not sure whether this should go in this forum or the Debate forum.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Los Angeles Clipper's owner Donald Sterling, is allegedly a racist, he supposedly made racist rarks against black people while talking to his GF. Reports say that he doesn't want black people in his stadium (which I think it's stupid considering a large majority of his players and fanbase is black), and that today's "culture" says that it's wrong to bring a black man with you to a stadium. He is also under fire for the remarks he made about his GF taking a picture with Magic Johnson. What do you think about this whole incident? And how do you think it will impact the future of the Clippers organization?

So as of now, Donald Sterling is banned from the NBA for good. He is no longer allowed to participate in any NBA activity, and ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers will be given to someone else (I don't know who though). I like the decision by the new NBA commissioner Adam (I forgot this last name).

If you are going to be racist against blacks, basketball is probably the wrong sport to invest in.
That was my immediate thought.

It's Paula Deen all over again.

Honestly, I think the punishments were ridiculous. He should not have been banned from the NBA for good, nor should he have been fined. People take racism to a whole new level when it involves blacks. I guarantee you if it was a black person that made a racist remark about white people, no one would care.

I think its a big over reaction. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. He is racist, so what, he didn't say anything in public. It was a private conversation with a girl friend. I don't know a thing about sports and don't clam to but I am sure a lot of people have done much worse than just telling a girl friend that they don't like blacks. I may not agree with his point of view but he has the right to believe what ever he wants.

tgags123 : Not true at all. if it was a black guy in Donald Sterling's position saying these remarks about a white man, almost every white man in America would be offended, and a lot more attebtion would be given to that black man. In fact, people would want to impose even more harsh penalties. Saying that it would be no big deal or that noone would care is one of the most false assumptions.

GenesisJunkie : Some of the things that he said were ridiculous. If you don't know, he says things like

"Black Jews are [lesser than] White Jews."

"you shouldn't being a black man with you to a game."

"I give [the black players], food, clothes, a home, etc."

Obviously this is paraphrased since I don't remember EXACTLY what he said, but you just don't say these things, especially when most if your supporters are offended by these comments. You say that they are overreacting, but I don't think you realize how much backlash Silver and the NBA would have got if this ruling wasn't passed. There would be riots, rebellions, and boycotts going on nationwide. Sure everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is a little overboard. He could've kept these ideas to himself, but I stead he decided to say them to his GF and now he's paying for it.

megamanmaniac : I am not defending what he said, I am defending his right to say it in a private conversation. If he went out and said it in an interview it would look bad on the company and I could see him getting the boot. Did she record him saying it? If not its just hear say and that doesn't hold up, I am sure he said it but that don't matter.

Well regarding the incident, I feel as though Donald Sterling knew he was being recorded but  didn't care because he see's himself already above normal society, and he probably figured his money could basically get him out of whatever problem his making those comments could cause. Personally me being African American I find it kind of dumb how Donald made raciest comments towards African American's and Hispanics when anywhere from 90% -96% of his team and the NBA in general is African American or Hispanic. I think the punishment was fair and it should teach him a lesson, just because you have money doesn't mean you can do as you please and treat people however you want.

Well as for the future of Mr. Sterling guess he should just stick to real estate because he's losing his basketball team which earned him most of his money (by the way) in the first place although I'm pretty sure after this incident  no one wants to be seen doing business with him. Maybe if he goes broke after losing his multi million dollar team he could return or resell the 2012 Ferrari and 2 Bentley s he brought   his "trophy wife" .

He blamed it on the time period he grew up in. He said that it was that which caused his racism. So yes, he is racist, but I hate when people use that excuse to be racist. There is no need for racism. Racism holds us back as a society in many different ways, and until people start to obtain the mindset that they should not be racist for good, we will remain in the dark ages. There are other factors holding us back, but are unrelated to racism, so I'll ignore posting those.

Some people really don't understand anything here, for one yes it does matter that sterling was born in the era where blacks were slaves and treated bad. That's how he was raised just because things change doesn't mean it's easy for people to. Then the phony NBA and it's commissioner fine him 2.5 mil and ban him from all games and are trying to force him to sell his own team for his freedom of speech which is bs in it's own since it is not a crime. Also the fact that it has been known for a decade that he has had lawsuits in the past about housing discrimination and only just now the NBA are doing something about it because it's convenient  and it lines their pockets with more money.

Then there's the fact the NAACP gave him awards and they are meant to represent black people and defend them against discrimination, yet because he is rich and bought them assets no doubt suddenly racism doesn't matter. And really it shouldn't because the money he gave them is more than any other outraged person has ever which actually helps the black community if the leaders don't take the money for themselves. Then there's part where he was illegally taped and set up by his gold digging mistress who's only role in life is to prostitute for money even though she looks like a thailand ladyboy. Also the fact that everyone is swooping to buy the business including magic johnson who was the one mentioned in the tape. Pretty suspicious to me and I have no doubt he was in greatly involved in this set up so he could own the team and probably try and knock off some of the stipulations of buying it and having leverage in negotiations.

Some people have an extremely warped view on things, sterlings a racist and who cares it doesn't affect anyone's life only stupid feelings, so ignore it and move on with your lives. It's not right that he clearly got conned and screwed over by a talentless,,worthless hoe from Los Angeles and dirty tactics by the NBA and magic johnson.

this whole situation was a joke. Private conversations are PRIVATE and should not be up for scrutiny.

I am not defending this guy cause he's a scumbag but I am not a fan of private recorded conversations being used against people. It's a bad precedent.

megamanmaniac : Wrong no one should pay for a private conversation and their own feelings unless its a plot for terrorism or what have you, in fact it's better that he's honest instead of a closet racist that many people seem to be so they don't get in trouble. And let's not get into the charade that black crime outrage is the same is white crime outrage just stop it. It's completely biased because white americans for the majority seem to be content on not being outraged for black on white crime but when the roles are reversed it's like rodney king in california every time. The whole trayvon martin thing was a farce and zimmerman isn't even white and irresponsible joke of a president always puts his two cents in for black crimes and issues but is nowhere to be seen when it's the other way around. If I had a son it would look like trayvon martin  he said but when christopher lane a white kid from australia was shot down by 3 african american thugs he was nowhere to be found.

Sterling may be a POS for his views but they are his views and he has a right to have them and black and white crime outrage is not even close to being the same, most troubling is privacy counts for nothing now either.

megamanmaniac : Sterling was just stupid there in my opinion. Who would be racist when it's audio taped and going to be shown to the NBA? He should have been smarter. And then for that he gets fined 2.5 million and can't attend any NBA Activities of some sort.

(I know it's a bit late to post about this topic though.)

The whole situation was overblown. He acted more like a jealous boyfriend than a racist. He shouldn't have said what he said, but lots of people say stupid things when they are mad. I think the NBA went way overboard. Also, I don't believe for a second that players would just boycott the league. Yeah right. They want their money. I mean the majority of players get paid more in one year than the average person would in their entire lives.

The man is obviously racist. That being said the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. He was baited into saying it plus he was at his home when he said it. They should not be able to make him sell the team. There have been people say much worse things than he did. Like Opera for instance. She was on record saying that old racist white people just need to die already. And thats not the only thing shes said she is always sayng something racsist yet its not even news. Were is her fine? Why has no one demanded she sell her network? The whole thing just stinks of media attention to me.
