Alright FINALLY! I can finally edit this review so it doesn't suck (well not as much at least.) I wrote a review on this game quite a while ago, it was almost around a year ago, and well needless to say after I finished it I hated it. It was too long, too spammy, and it just wasn't fun to read. However I can finally fix that now that I finally have time, I doubt ANYBODY cares, but I do, as I want my reviews to be fun, informative, but serious enough so that people who have played the game can enjoy reading my opinion, as well as people who haven't played the game to play it/not playing it. Enough of this! Time to review Sonic the Hedgehog. So lets do a little backround check on this little blue rascal.

Sonic the Hedgehog, is a platformer (HERP DERP ya don't say?) that is much different from Mario. You see Mario's gameplay was more slow, linear, and well...slow. When Sonic came out he was an instant hit, he was blue, cool, fast, cool, had cool sneakers, cool, fast (you get the idea) so much so that Sonic became Mario's RIVAL. Yes you heard me right Sonic rivaled gaming's biggest icon....that's quite impressive Sega. Oh yeah Sega published the game and Sonic Team developed it. But I'm sure you've heard this all before everyone knows this story and if ya haven't its on the inerwebzz so check it out there (fun fact, Sonic Team/Sega actually had a very difficult time trying to find a good mascot to represent their game. They tried a fox, rabbit, pretty much all animals seeing which one would fit best. Heck Dr. Robotnik, the villain for this game was going to be the protagonist. He was going to be a kid in pajamas running around grassy hills I guess.) So without further ado, lets see what the blue blur's first game is like.

Graphics: 9/10 Yes everyone knows it, this game looks gorgeous! Sonic and friends (or enemies) animate very well and the locations themselves are varied and very well made. You've got six zones including Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, Spring Yard Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Star Light Zone and Scrap Brain Zone. Ech of these have three levels, two being normal levels, and the 3rd being a boss battle against Robotnik. Each of these zones have their own distinct and level gimmicks, I like these zones...except Marble and Labyrinth zone, I hate these two, and if you have played this game then you know why. You can really feel the sense of speed as you blaze through these levels, and it all looks great. There are lots of enemies and they are all varied and nicely designed and so is Sonic. The graphics were highly praised when this game came out in 1991 and with good reason as they still look great today.

Sound: 8/10 The music for this game is quite iconic to say the least, it is also quite awesome to say the least. Come on show me one person who doesn't know the Green Hill Zone tune (I can play it on guitar. ) The rest of the music is great too, I really like Star Light Zone's music. Then you got the classic sounds like Sonic jumping and bopping enemies on the head and stuff, it all sounds good and the music is going to be in your head for a while after playing.

Addictiveness: 6/10 Meh honestly once you get all the Chaos Emeralds (which I will go into later) and played through the game 2 times, the game just kinda gets boring. However beware as this game is not going to be what you expect it to be, it IS a platformer and you can't just run around as fast as you want without getting hit a lot. That's what a lot of people think going into this game when in fact especially Marble Zone and Labyrinth it can be quite slow, lots of waiting around for platforms to move and going slowly through the levels to learn them, this isn't as fast paced as some people going in expect. Now that isn't a bad thing but for your first playhrough this game can be extremely frustrating, you see, the camera is zoomed in quite a bit to our hero and it can be a bit hard to know whats coming up until you learn the levels making speed a reward. That isn't a bad thing but once again it can make for a extremely frustrating first playthrough of the game, there is lots of trial and error making this game much more fun on your second playthrough, learn the levels and just beat the game on your first playthrough and then on your second blaze through the stages at super sonic speed! Collecting the Chaos Emeralds as you go! I will go into those later but they are not exactly worth collecting in my opinion.

Story: 5/10 Typical for a SG game. The just of it is that an evil scientist named Dr. Robotnik has turned all of Sonic's friends into robots, and has stolen the 6 Chaos Emeralds (yes you read that right 6 not 7) for his own evil deeds and it is up to Sonic to stop him. Now more on the Chaos Emeralds. At the end of every level (except the 3rd level the boss level) if you have 50 rings (rings are Sonic's health, pick them up in the levels and as long as you have at least one you can survive a hit and collecting 100 gets you a 1-up) then a giant ring appears, jump into it and you start a special stage. A special stage has Sonic rotating a maze like thingy majig. Collect the Chaos Emerald at the end and you win. Collecting all the Chaos Emeralds DOES NOT give you access to Super Sonic, rather collecting them all gives you the good ending. Yes there are 2 endings, the good ending and the bad ending. Now again in my opinion collecting all of the Chaos Emeralds and getting the good ending is not worth it. The endings are not that different and you should only go after them if you REALLY want to see the good ending.

Depth: 7/10 So as Sonic you can do the basic things you'd expect to be able to do. Sonic can move/run, jump, crouch, and if pick up speed while running pressing down will have Sonic roll in a ball, no there is no spindash in this game. The levels are quite big with lots of secrets and alternate pathways. It isn't really worth exploring though unless you wanna try to find the fastest possible route to the exit or got hit and are scouring the stage for 50 more rings in hopes to access the special stage, or are looking for the various powerups, there are 5 in all, the shield, the power sneakers, the super ring, the invincibility, and the 1-up. The shield lets Sonic take a hit without losing any rings, the power sneakers makes him extra fast although I like to avoid these whenever possible as it makes platforming much more difficult, the super ring which just gives Sonic 10 rings at a time, the invincibility just let sonic be invincible for a short amount of time, and the 1-up which is self explanatory. Then the two endings which I already talked about, the Chaos Emeralds and there's the boss battles. These are extremely easy (except the Labyrinth Zone boss seriously SCREW THAT GUY!) Overall there is a decent amount here and speedrunners will definitely have a great time with this game.

Difficulty: 7/10 The game is only hard on your first playthrough cause again once you learn the levels they are not that difficult and are quite fun. The boss battles are easy for the most part and collecting the Chaos Emeralds while it can be annoying shouldn't make you tear your hair out in frustration. Sonic controls very nicely and there were only a few times where Sonic's jump can feel a bit stiff. There isn't much more to say about this so I'll just leave it at that.

To rap things up: Overall Sonic's first adventure holds up well and I would say is worht playing although his future installments are better so unless you REALLY want to start from his roots you should probably just go play Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 although it does hold up on its own. Also I know quite a while ago I said I was going to do all three Sonic games but alas I'm not going to, why? Cause I don't really feel like it anymore (deal with it!) I think there are some other games that I should review..games that are not that well known, ya know hidden gems. So for the next few reviews I'm going to be looking at hidden gems. If you guys have any requests on what you would like me to review then please pm or comment on my profile or however you would like to get a hold of me. If you have any suggestions on how I can make my reviews better then by all means speak up. So anyways back to Sonic. Now don't worry if you missed this game on the Genesis because it is everywhere, it is in several collections, virtual console, the gba (DON'T play that version) and pretty much everywhere else, it isn't hard to find. So I would recommend this if you are a fan of platformers or just want to see Sonic's first adventure as it is worth playing through, just put up with a little frustration on the way. Well that's it for this review guys I'm not sure what I'm going to review next but like I said I will be doing what I personally consider to be hidden gems and I will be doing probably 2 or 3 that I think deserve reviews the most. Anyways that is all for this review I hope you enjoyed, have a great day, and I will see you all later! See ya!
