TITLE: LORDS OF THUNDER SYSTEM SEGA CD REVIEW BY GOLGO 14 ****
ENTER THE TRIAL OF THUNDER..
Before the Sega CD was laid to rest, lying there looking for light at the end of it's tunnel.. along came a final breath of fresh air in the form of a horizontal shooter that let the Sega CD stand on it's feet to at least die an honorable death..and after playing this game I can tell you that the Sega CD went out swinging!
Story: 4 The "story" in Lords of Thunder goes a little like this..The world of Mistril was guarded by the All Mighty Warrior Dyu and the Goddess of Destiny named Pharina and imprisoned The Dark One known as Zaggard .It doesn't explain how exactly the following happened but I'll take a stab at it anyway..You see Zaggard must've had some serious connections because the 6 Guardians that were guarding him(What happened to Dyu and Pharnia? oh well) let everyone that had a passport from this Shadow Realm slip by(the game actually says foolishly let in ) and would wreck havok and free the Dark One Zaggard in the process. GOOD JOB '"GUARDIANS!"I suppose what would be years later the Great warrior Dyu was no more but had a son by the name of Landin, who inherits his dad's magic armor and weapons and goes on a mission received from Pharina(I think she could be his mother I dunno)that asks him to rid the land of all the demons that entered from the Shadow Realm AND the 6 guardians who let them in to begin with..Ha! The only interesting thing about the story is that each part of the land that is guarded by the Guardians thematically represent the elements of planet Earth such as wind, fire and ice but strangely, all the stages are actually words in SPANISH. For example the land that represents the ice elements is called Helado which is Spanish for ice cream!The land representing fire is called Llamarada which is Spanish for Blaze...you crafty developers you ! Ha!
GRAPHICS :9 Lords of Thunder is gorgeous! The developers pump the screen full of intricately designed mechanical/demonic beasts , epic Boss fights that are animated and constructed with a high level of polish and detail that jump off the screen.The stages are pained with fine brush strokes of color blending effortlessly in to the depth of each stage binded with layers of parallax scrolling and additional foreground textures. The style of Lords of Thunder is a creative mix of Anime and Power Rangers.Who doesn't love fighting giant flying armored turtles that breath fire!? The designers also seem to have an obsession with tasking all that is Crustacean(not on the same level of the great Darius series though) to rise from the sea and put an end to your quest just in case you missed target practice at Red Lobster.
SOUND/MUSIC: 10 Lords of Thunder will ROCK YOU!! The compositions excite(especially the last few stages) with intense, squealing electric guitar arrangements, masterfully layered punishing drum breaks that would make any rock fan feel like they're front row centre at a sold out rock performance! WOW. The sound design kind of plays second fiddle to the epic soundtrack but offer some satisfying battle cries and explosions that make the carnage on screen feel that much more satisfying.
GAMEPLAY/DEPTH:7 The moment to moment game play brings a lot of variety. You have the option at the beginning of each stage to equip Landin with 4 different types of elemental based magic armor effects(earth,water,fire and wind)that can be upgraded with bombs and other various attributes at a shop that I like to call Mistril's Mini Mart.Every enemy you strike down ( in close with you're trusty sword or from a distance with you're selected weapon) spout currency that you can use to level up which I gotta say, is really fun to do and keeps me coming back to try to best my accumulated funds from the last run..The bullet patterns,enemies, stages and especially the Bosses all demand you learn certain techniques that you have to master and are really fun to figure out. Lords' takes about 30 min to complete it's 6 or 7 stages and presents an intermediate challenge for all!
CONCLUSION: Lord of Thunder is a fantastic shooter with a lot of addicting qualities that should satisfy any gamer looking to give their trigger finger a work out and comes packaged with easily one of the BEST soundtracks of all time for ANY shooter.
