For the past few years now, every February I have a competition which involves catching as many Pokemon as you can. This year I'm asking for users to make suggestions on which Pokemon game in the Retro Game Room I should use this month. The game should be somewhat difficult (not too easy) and it should have a lot of Pokemon in it (so that it takes the contestants a while).

Here's this competition's results threads from the past few years:
https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=55014
https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=36742
https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=23557

Staff : Just in case one of you have a suggestion, I'm summoning all of you.

Pokemon Crystal isn't the easiest pokemon game, especially when you get to the elite 4. As for the amount of pokemon you can own in total, that is 224, minus the trade pokemon, which is a decent amount too. I think it will attrack more players since it is one of the original games and many will know it well since it is one of vizzed's most played.

There is Pokemon Bronze and Light Platinum too.

I agree with Pokemon Crystal.  Pokemon Crystal has a lengthy campaign, plenty of Pokemon (but not a ton), and is beloved by many people on Vizzed.

supernerd117 :
MechaMento :

If we were to go with Pokemon Crystal than we can go with either Pokemon Crystal - Emu Edition or Pokemon Crystal All , both are hacks of Pokemon Crystal which allow you to catch all of the Pokemon in a single game.

I think Emu edition is the way forwards. The extra difficulty should play a decent role in this competision. It will make it interesting challenge.

greenluigi : We actually did 'Pokemon Emerald 386' already in a previous competition.

MechaMento : Yeah most of these competitions have been "emu editions" so they are definitely the way to go with a competition like this that involves catching as many Pokemon as you can. Now it's just a matter of picking between the 2 that I listed (assuming we go with one of them) so if you have a suggestion on which of the 2 I should go with, let me know and why.

Only issue with doing a Pokemon Silver "Emu" Edition one is that you did a Pokemon Gold Emu Edition before...

I mean, if you don't mind basically redoing a competition (since the differences between the two are negligible) then it'd work.

I can't really think of my own suggestion right now though, since I haven't played a Pokemon game in forever.

Davideo7 :

I meant to say Crystal.

The differences between Gold/Silver and Crystal are minimal at best.

I'd reccommend a difficult hack if I knew of one, but unfortunately, I just don't have the time to go crawling through every hack on Vizzed to find one in a short amount of time

Legacyme3 is right. There is only little alteration in story from crystal and gold and silver.

Maybe Pokemon Red emu edition since it emu hacs have worked well in the past.

There is also Pokemon Brown which I just found. It adds 70 pokemon into red however I am not sure if all of the pokemon in the pokedex are catchable.

Davideo7 :

Maybe next year, you should warn us staff in the staff forums to look for a Pokemon Hack ahead of time so we have a month to help you find one lol.

MechaMento :

If it's the Brown "I" am thinking of, then I don't think it does allow you to catch all the pokemon. However, Red emu may work, I haven't tried that one out yet.

There's Pokemon Dark Rising. It's supposedly pretty difficult and it has 386 Pokemon that can be caught. It could be a little too hard, though. I don't know, I've never actually played it.

I'll test out Pokemon Bronze, I don't think there is much point in playing Pokemon Red Emu edition since we all pretty much know what it is. When do you want a verdict?

Davideo7 : It seems to me that Pokemon Crystal All mixes things up a bit more than the Emu, and is rated slightly better as well.  Unfortunately, I'm not able to try either of them out at the moment.  I'd say either one would be a good choice.  All has more plays by far, but Emu seems to be simpler and those more familiar with Crystal will probably have the edge.  If I have to vote, I'd go with Emu despite its lower rating, in order to draw in a more core crowd.

Davideo7 : A lot of the suggestions made already mentioned how they are super popular. I would strongly advise against using any of the Pokémon games that most people play. I would say to try to find one that has the least amount of plays. Otherwise, this is what happens-

You pick one that is super popular and a lot of people have played through or are playing now. Odds are, a lot of people already have save files that either already have all the Pokémon caught, or very far along already. Then they have to do significantly less work than anyone who has to start from the beginning.

If you stay away from the ones that have the most amount of activity, the less likely chance that users will have save files that already have the job pretty much done.

supernerd117 : It is the only possible way that members in the past had caught 386 Pokémon in 2 days when they have school or something. That isn't something that can be done in a 24 hour period unless you are unbelievably lucky n which Pokémon you run into.
