The Nintendo Wii is barely any more powerful than the Nintendo GameCube, so why the Nintendo Wii $250, even still? The system is weak and outdated and is last gen quality, and the "technology" that it has is all in the remote itself so I don't see how that affects the price of the Wii itself (not to mention it's old technology).

Sure, the Nintendo Wii has a few really good games but it probably has one of the worst library of games of any system I've ever seen. You can go to any website, the average rating of a Nintendo Wii game is way below 5 and there's really not many games that are above a 9.

And what was all that crap for the past few Christmas's of Wii shortages? I personally think that was all BS, there's no reason why Nintendo would have problems producing enough Nintendo Wii's, especially if they had all year to prepare for the Christmas season but once the Christmas season comes around, they magically run low. What really is going on is, Nintendo intentionally does it to make it seem like the Nintendo Wii is in such huge demand and when humans think something is in huge demand and is a must have item, everyone scrambles to get it because all of a sudden they think they need it. Now whether this was really the case or not, it sure seemed like it and it sure worked.

I've played 5 Nintendo Wii games that were fun and that's pretty pathetic considering I've played 20+ Wii games, the rest were just no fun at all. But I do admit that the Wii games that are fun are REALLY fun but this system just doesn't offer enough entertainment, especially not for $250 of outdated hardware.

So what do the rest of you guys think?

I agree it is a waste of money, and I cant stand its controls.
Innovative my ass, if I want repetitive strain injury I'm sure I can think of a better way then flailing my arms around in an attempt to play a game.
And the selection of games is even worse in australia, a whole bunch of party crap or games that rely on side flailing about to play them.
I was already losing respect for nintendo when the gamecube came out due to the poor quality of releases of rpg's we would get as compared to the psx/ps2, but the wii is the final nail in their console coffin to me.
And what is with this virtual store rubbish, they want me to buy a rom that doesnt even run properly??
Yeah right, I'll stick with my old nes/snes carts and GYR thank you very much.

I personally don't mind some games requiring the motion, I just wouldn't like it if all games utilized it. I mean, I love playing the Wii Fit and some of the games on there are really fun but it wouldn't be a game I'd put more than an a half hour into straight.

I'm getting all my prices from EB Games Australia, so pretty much the standard prices if there are no sales.
360 Arcade is $299.00, so converted to USD its about $250.
So if you were meaning the arcade in your post then it might have the least mark up.

Yeah the Arcade unit is what I meant and it looks like it's cheaper than the Wii there also. Sure the Arcade unit doesn't have a hard drive but neither does the Wii. For an extra $20, you can attach a 20GB hard drive to the Xbox 360 Arcade Unit (plus the unit comes with 5 xbox live games and a memory card).

For Games?
The Nintendo Wii could have potential, this system would be fantastic for adventure and platforming games.

But for shooters? The Wii is the type of console which iD or Valve would touch with 10 foot pole.

Personally I think shooters shouldnt be on consoles period, with the exception of games like Time Crisis and House of the Dead (but only using a "light gun").
So in those small exceptions the Wii is ok.
Apart from that, no, less "innovation" more old style controls.

It's weird because I've always liked FPS games on consoles better than on computer because I much rather play games with a controller than with a keyboard and mouse, the only exception to this is The Sims and RTS games. Half Life 2, for example, I played it for both PC and Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it a lot better on my Xbox 360, just more comfortable that way and I can enjoy it with 46 inches of LCD and surround sound

But after that? Honestly there are a few good games for Wiiware and then its just shovelware. Brawl is good for around two weeks, same with Super Mario Bros. The last time I enjoyed the wii was with No More Heroes.

Like Hyren said, I can get ROMS that let you play online, a BIG mistake for the Wii. And honestly, I don't want to move around in my games because all it does is make you act like a retard in front of your TV. Plus, many games don't even function well with the wii-mote.

Yes and yes. I don't really care that the graphics aren't as good as the 360 and PS3, because graphics are a small factor of the game. It's the lack of quality games with a deep storyline and that are just fun. Most of the games are meant for casual gamers and families. A few for us that actually like games like Devil May Cry. Most of the games even have trouble with the controls. They make you feel like a spas, flailing your arms around.

As for the Virtual Console, OOOOOOOH AI GOT EMULATION! AI CULD NVR HAV EMULATION B4! Seriously, I'd much rather go to GYR and download the emulator(which, sadly, usually works better than Nintendo's emulator ) and download the ROM.

Wiiware. Most of it is trash designed to hook in the kiddies and get money. I'd rather go on Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network and get quality games than waste money on shovelware.

There are a few golden games, such as Mario Galaxy, Zelda Twilight Princess, and Smash Bros Brawl. However, the majority of the games are trash.

Rasen, I agree with your point for the VC but I think the problem is with this. So I have a freind in Sweden named Tim and he can't download ROMS due to how the Swedish government looks at the internet actvivty, and he has to buy the roms.
And for runescape123, I believe the homebrew channel allows for DS games to be played.

He should use a proxy. Alot of Swedish people download roms no problems from what I understand.
My point is if you are paying for it it should be better and superior to what is available free, not limited and inferior.

Granted there is a small amount of games that are ok, but most are for children and family, not for hardcore gamers.
I would like to see more games like Muramasa come out, that have some difficulty and where you can use an actual controller instead.
Even the games creators admit that the controller option is better, stating they put it in for "precision players".

Well i personaly think the wii is OK My uncle got use one for Christmas last year and a bunch of games. I Think it was all about 200-300 dollars. I have only played the wii about 23 times and the games got boring after about playing each of them for about 4 hours. I did love the wii sport resort and mario kart games and still play them when i get the chance. but all in all i dont think i should be that pricey it was not actually that cool and if you want to spend that kind of money then do it on PSP or DS games (PS This is what i think of it dont hate mail me please)

WOW, THREE GAMES! Seriously, compare that to the 360 or PS3 and you just get raped by them. And I'm sorry but Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was an awful game and New Super Mario Bros Wii is just the same thing with a new level or two plus a multiplayer mode.

And Super Mario Galaxy 2 probably won't get a 10, seeing as most games this years have innovative then that ever will.

The Wii may have more system stability I'll grant that, but so does the PS3.
Plus sheer variety does not a good console make as it means there is no focus and a large portion of pure gamers are left out in the cold if they have a Wii.
Having a console for one or two good games is pointless, especially in the Wiis case, one might as well just find something like it on another console that has more of that specific game achetype.

I think the idea was good but shouldn't have been so exclusive. It shouldn't have been built solely around the controller and the games designed for it. Give the more adult/serious gamers some game variety and it would have been a great system.

I had high hopes for the wii, and it was alot of fun at first but the lack of good games has made the wii dusty and lonely aside from the new excitebike/castlevania

Now that I have a Wii, I can provide some new opinions on it. The motion sensitive controller is very responsive, but the concept has been overused and misused. I think they try too hard to make a lot of the games utilize the motion sensitive technology, and it can ruin what could otherwise be a perfectly good game. The games appeal to a broader range of people because it targets mostly the casual gamers, much to the dismay of hardcore gamers (also, hardcore games are more expensive to produce). The limited graphics don't bother me, but I don't like the arm flailing most of the time. A few more hardcore/semi-hardcore games would be welcomed, too.

But at first I thought the WII is just crazy, harder and more exciting, but when I was at the shop buying it, I had a feeling that the WII might not be fun as the old games, but my sister and brother wanted to buy it soooo badly, so we bought it (and over 10 games), and after 2 weeks, I got bored of it, because its games didn't have a long story (which makes the game longer), and so easy that I can win by playing my own feet (I haven't tried that but I will), so that why it was a rap off for me.

I think the Nintendon Wii is pretty good!! But I do agree that there are alot of games that are not great!! But like every Nintendo Wii game I have is pretty awesome such as...Super Smash Bros Brawl, Punch-Out, Mario & Sonic At The Olympic games, WWE Smackdown. VS. Raw 2010, Wii-Fit Plus, Mario Kart Wii, Wii Sports, & The Biggest Loser!!

I don't really like the controller, but I love the Wii Fit! That being the case, I voted no, because I think that even if the technology is older, the Wii Fit balance board is, as far as I know, a new application of said older technology.

Yes, the graphics aren't the best and yes they don't have a lot of the games that the PS3 and 360 have. But it does have a lot of games that the PS3 and 360 don't. Zelda, Mario, and Metriod are exclusive to Nintendo and have some of the most popular games ever are in those series. Nintendo also has Super Smash Bros. which is so successful that they decided to make 2 more after the first. (SSBB is the BEST GAME EVER!!!)The Wii does have it's weaknesses. Youre half correct but most of the enjoyable things about the wii is the games you can download there are over 250 games that are extremely enjoyable on there. Including what allows me to post on the board through the wii for free the internet channel. Sure it costs 10 dollers for 1000 points but its worth it after. (you must have aa working internet connection) so in short i belive the wii is worth the price... espicially since its the most durable system out there. and the mostly made for travelling

The idea of Virtual Console is nearly pointless when you're on Vizzed, while Mario and Zelda might be good, Nintendo has milked it into a complete cashcow. Casual games mostly suck, it's just Nintendos way of saying "Instead of going outside, BUY OUR PRODUCTS!"

Not really. It's a fun, innovative, and very interactive system, that's fun for people of all ages. If anything, I would consider the ups in prices on systems these days to be blamed on inflation and competition.

Theres not even that much excersize, I mean even the wii fit. It lets you do anything you can normally do, but for a shorter period of time. And it killed first person games; I'm playing cod 3... no online, nothing! Not even 2 player. And you move one cm and it flys off the screen. If you think about it, the wii is a lot like the nintendo R.O.B. toy that was released with the NES super pack.Both sound amazing but aren't really as great as you're led to believe.
Comparing a robot that plays video games with you and games that you feel like you're really in them, or at least that's what commercials say. Just like how the rob only sat and gathered dust, not many people play wii by themselves.


When you look at this data, it's safe to say the wii is just as big a scam (bigger actually) as the ROB toy.

I suppose it depends on who Nintendo are selling the console to, if their market is hyperactive extroverts that always have 2-4 friends at their place 5 out of 7 days then it's perfect.

I think it barely costs anything compared to something like the Xbox 360. I don't want to pay 400 bucks for an xbox. And anyways, I've played about 40 wii games, and they were all fun. im going to have to disagree. love my wii. nintendo has always come out with things that are way ahead of the competition. (dont get me started on sony) other companies stick with a regular controler and better graphics thats it. nothing new is ever brought to the table except with nintendo. the wii isnt about graphics its about gaming experience. there are alot of good games on the wii. punch out, SSBB, Mario kart, Mario anything, Legend of zelda (it got game of the year so dont say its bad). the reason for so many bad ones is that nintendo has ALOT of third party support. so the third party games try and cash in on the motion controls and forget about making the game fun or making the controls...not broken. some third party games do work though like de blob, and boom blox. nintendo was never about having the best graphics or the better hardware. they were always about the experience

To be honest, I sort of forced myself to like the system. I only played the real gems like zelda and galaxy and brawl, but besides that I am sort of dissapointed and hope they focus on gamers over familys next time.

its definitely a rip off, i like the system and its games and all, but the prices are just to much. its not a HD type of game system unlike the ps3, and most games are just boring carnival games or ones that nobody has heard of. its more worth a Nintendo DSi's price instead of around $200/ $250. its worth $150 at least, but it doesn't easily break like the Xbox 360. and that, and all the the other good games/ old games are the only good things about it.

Ill say this. I have 2 xbox 360'that broke down on me, plus my original xbox broke down on me. However, my Nintendo wii and Ps2 has not broke down on me and I am enjoying games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Other M, Okami and Zelda. In terms of longevity the nintendo wii is worth the price because the xbox 360 dies so quickly. I had the first xbox 360 for a year and it died, and then I bought a second one and it died in about 3 months.
My nintendo Wii so far has been working for about 3 years straight, and most of the time I was playing the wii.

Also, the xbox 360 scratched a couple of my xbox discs.

Its graphical system wouldn't be worth it for $250, but at its price right now ($150), it's definitely worth it for the technology and certain games (like Super Mario Galaxy). Also, my family's Wii has been through all sorts of use and abuse, and it's still working fine. Also, it has compatibility with Netflix, which we use a lot. On those points, I'd say it's worth it.

For the most popularly known case of motion control being done well, it's worth the price. I mean, this technology is expensive, and imagine how much worse the price would be if Nintendo had decided not to skimp on the graphical abilities, and all that good stuff. Notice how the consoles without motion control out of the box are more expensive? Well... It's not because the company is greedy, even though they are anyway, it's because the company knows that the guts make the price justified.

I'll just use the PS3 as an example, as it is notorious for the original price back when it came out. People moaned and whined about how it, and claimed they may as well just get a computer for the price it was. These people didn't realize why it was so costly. Let me list the reasons.

1. It had a new media format called Blu-Ray, and used Blu-Ray discs. This format boasts extremely high quality in visuals and maybe more compared to all forms of DVDs. This was just some attempt at making Sony's new format kill off DVDs, obviously, but it also uses the format's strengths for making games have more powerful graphics.

Now, just to put this out there. If it weren't for the PS2, DVDs would probably not have killed off VHS. Oddly enough, the PS3 being able to play Blu-Ray discs didn't do a thing for the format's popularity. This will seem odd when you look back at what the PS2's DVD playing abilities did for the format.

2. The system has what was all the current stuff at the time in the guts. It was pretty up to date. It could play games from three different systems, as well. A system that could play Playstation, Playstation 2, and Playstation 3 games isn't going to be getting a cheap price.

3. With all that power in everything, how much more needs to be justified? The PS3 was worth the high price. It would be stupid to price it lower due to the advanced technology it boasted.

Now, compare this with the Wii's original release price. It's just like that. Only, very much more deferred. It is backwards in the guts. It has the older technology for graphics, and the like. The motion controls are nothing new, but the ones the Wii boasted were the most well-done by that time. It was the biggest part of the reason it was $250.

The games a system has doesn't ever justify the retail price. It doesn't even justify the price on old consoles. If that were so, then PS2s would be priced as high as the PS3's original price possibly. The Atari 2600 had tons of great games, but it is dirt cheap. Why? It's so common, for one. The technology is so outdated now, too.

About the Xbox 360's longevity, the first shipping and maybe a few other early shippings of them had notoriously short lifetimes in most cases due to some issues in the hardware. This was Microsoft's fault, but they fixed the early issues as time went on. If a system dies, and it isn't because of issues early shippings of them have, it's the user's fault. My PS2 is 10 years old, and it works like it's new. The system shows no sign of dying still. What does this say about my unit? I was careful with it.

If you don't treat a piece of computer hardware or video game console hardware right, you're gonna get slapped on the cheek like a bad boyfriend. Why? The console is like a girlfriend. It needs to be treated good, or it'll bit back or give you the silent treatment.

I think that the lack of supply could be a scam, but the price is reasonable. You left out in your original post that they have the Wii Shop Channel. If you've ever visited there, they charge $5 for a lot of the games. Those same games can still be bought as cartridges on Ebay, but they are around $20 or more nowadays. There is hidden value behind the lack of top rated games.

I know Kinect and Move weren't around when this thread was started, but they are now and they definitely matter. Once Sony and Microsoft try to shove themselves into the motion gaming business they will either fail or they will have the same number of high rated games as Wii (either PS3 and Xbox go down or Wii goes up).

I half a year ago I might have voted differently, but as far as I can see the Wii is turning things around. I don't think it's a waste anymore.

Wii is too expensive. Not only is the console expensive but so are the games....a game costs more than an outfit. That is insane and ridiculous. There's nothing different about Wii than any other system except movement. That's not a good enough reason to charge ridiculous prices. If you want to spend a lot of money on a worthy console...buy a PS3.

I was looking forward to getting a Wii for nostalgia purposes when I found out about the list of retro games. Then I got one and realized that internal memory is next to zilch, and to get a significant number of those old-school games, I'd have to spend MORE money to pump up the memory. And I hate that almost every Wii game REQUIRES the Wii-mote and Nunchuck. I hated playing Twilight Princess because of it, and actually went out and bought Game Cube controllers so I could enjoy Smash Bros. I ended up selling my Wii to a co-worker and don't really have any regrets about it.

There are a lot of great wii games out there. and those games themselves are pretty awesome. the wii needs to get more better selling games. i think half the wii games are just sequels to previous best selling games. theres no new series out with the new concept. either way, it IS getting old, but it does provide some entertainment for a person with a bored mind like me

I agree with pretty much David said, if it still applies. As for the old PC vs. Console controls: I prefer to use my PS3 controller on PC games that allow that option.

Its Very simple Mr. Davideo7, look at IGN Right now and you'll see That 3 games exclusively on Wii( For the moment) have 10's,Super Mario Galaxy 2,Ocarina of Time and Chrono Trigger.The Xbox 360 also has 3 games that got a ten but they are also on PS3 Sp they are not exclusives and the PS3 Has 4 Tens but only 1 of them is exclusive to PS3(Metal Gear Solid 4) so the way I See It is:

The Wii isn't half bad actually.. , but it could A LOT better. Maybe the new Wii U thing will bump up the value of the Wii and make it better . Some of the newer games for the wii, the once that were announced, look pretty epic. so far .

Just look at how they rushed the WiiU out.

They know their first attempt was a bad idea.

Now they are kicking themselves, and are scrambling to get back in the race.

The only reason I would honestly buy a Wii, is to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Maybe a Mario Kart game. Other then that, it would actually honestly only work as a substitute Gamecube, since mine is... Well, it doesn't close. It keeps opening by itself. I think something is jammed in the open button thingy because it doesn't want to come up.

I would buy a wii for the games (mostly virtual console) not the graphics or features

Lol I would have voted the same way 2 years ago as I did now, me dad bought the 60 gig PS3 in 07 for 600 dollars !!? USD lol. Still I love how it's a Blu-Ray player as well go HD gaming not mention everything it has now. PSMOve, 3D gaming, PS1 games are still being added to the PSN store library for your fav old games....
Looking back I could've waiting in getting my Wii, I mostly got it for exclusives, but still ended up shelling out money for PS3 games , and now a bit of Xbox360 games before I spend money on Wii stuff. I have SSBB, and nothing else of note really.

I somewhat disagree. The Wii does have lots of issues like poor graphics and such but it wasn't really meant for all that when it was made. Nintendo originally made the Wii for the family. Like todays modern day consoles like 3DS and PS2 I can imagine the family getting down and playing POKéMON black and Call Of Duty as a family. But sitting down playing Wii sports and also getting a little excersise doesn't hurt. Sure the Wii could have done better but I think it's just fine.

Before I provide an answer, here is a story.

A while back, I went to a pawn store looking for a few NES games to help rebuild my collection, and of the five games, I only managed to get one quality game. By that I mean I found two atrociously bad games (Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit) one game I wasn't interested in (Dr Mario), and the fourth cartridge was in poor condition. Now...I also saw a line of GBA games of varying quality but due to funding could only buy Pokemon Emerald for about $15 dollars. Awesome deal. Now...while I was looking for these games, I noticed that literally half of the store's stock was Nintendo Wii's and related peripherals. If one shelf was used for Ps3, Ps2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Gamecube and Dreamcast items, then about 6 or 7 shelves was used for Wii items (I considered packages with a controller and whatnot one item instead of 3-4 items to be nice) and about two shelves in a corner had brand New Nintendo Wiis hardly even used.

I believe the Wii was 100% gimmicky and a waste of money. The Wii's only good games are a small number of first party games by Nintendo and the scattered third party game, but Nintendo's poor relations with third party developers made development nearly impossible (such as not letting developers have access to the Mii code for online) and most of the games are generic, sub-par mini game compilations or extremely sloppy ports that looks like they date from 1995. 

I don't mind the lower graphics, assuming the game play is good but all you really do is "waggle" or shake the controller wildly. The only reason to really own a Wii is to download older games, but we got Vizzed and old school consoles for that.

Personly i really like the wii cause of the vc so i can play really good retro games with out emulators

The only way I would get a wii is if it was going for under $100 and was already flashed and emulation ready.

It might very well be a scam, it is pretty fun, but it is somewhat of a ripoff now that you compare the price and the game itself.

Nintendo has now upped the level of the scam with the 3DS and the upcoming Wii U. The 3DS is moving many times more slowly than the original DS ever did with complaints about the 3D effects and just low quality of the games.
The Wii U is supposed to be better than the current gen systems, but how long have they been out for? According to an article I read earlier, the new wii should be many times better than the current systems because of advances in technology, but that won't happen. If the original wii came out and didn't support already existing high def graphics, what makes anyone think that the new wii will live up to its hype?
Nintendo charges so much for it's systems because parents will buy it for their children.
