Good day fellow Vizzed members.

So I happen to come upon this story after doing some random internet searching (kind of weird but I enjoy it). So as some of you may or may not there has been attempt over the years by Native American tribes to have the Washington Redskins Football Team to change their name as they view the name Redskin is offense to Native Americans. Native American tribes have also tried similar actions to change the Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Indians, and Florida State Seminoles name. All efforts however have not been fruitful.

Recently however their has been some gains over the Washington Redskins controversy with Rodger Goodell saying that a name change might be an idea. And just recently there has been a patent filling for the name "Washington Bravehearts" under the category "entertainment congruent to football games" (or something that has to do with football). Needless to say I was quite shocked when I first heard this story. My first reaction was that I don't see the big deal with the name change (that and countless Mel Gibson William Wallace quotes). Bravehearts still sounds Native American-ish, so its not like the Native American feeling is going completely away and the Redskins can still use their mascot, logo, etc. That's just my opinion.

So what is your opinion on this potential name change and should teams that use Native American terms (like Indians, Redskins, Blackhawks, etc) be forced to change their name?

the only name change for the Washington Redskins I would suggest would be to change the Washington part. That is the thing I would be ashamed of.

If teams owners really want to give up a name they have had for a very long time over a tiny bit of external pressure then they are free to do so but I don't see the need for it.

University of Northern Colorado did a thing like this years ago and had an intramural basketball team called the Fighting Whities to show how silly the use of names of ethnics groups can be.

http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Fightin-Whities-mascot-raises-a-little-awarness-1083127.php

And nothing really changed.  I don't see names like "Ragin' Cajuns," "Fighting Irish," "Fighting Illini," or even "Sioux," going anywhere and with the exception of the Notre Dame name drop, those aren't big schools.  You'll have a tougher time changing an NHL team, and NFL team, or a current national championship contender (pencil in FSU to take on and beat Bama in January).  The people that take offense have a point and that's fine.

What about San Diego State?  What about the Celtics or Vikings, which are groups not native to our area?  What would you do with those names if you change Redskins?

My opinion is this: if it's hurtful and malicious with intent to name a team something, they need to change it.  I cannot argue that anyone offended by names, especially native Americans, have to get over it.  It bothers them and that's that.  I don't feel the need for a name change but I'm a white kid from the suburbs.
