I have been seeing a lot of people talk about evolution and how there is no God, etc.

Ever since I was a kid, I was absolutely fascinated with theoretical physics and the universe, but there was always a connection to the universe being created from the Big Bang. I am a Christian, and I believe God created the universe. Maybe the Big Bang is just a way for scientists to explain the creation of the universe, who knows.

I do not really believe in evolution either...God created Adam and Eve, and so on and so forth.

Going on with what I said about the Big Bang, can science be compatible with religion, or will they contradict each other?

Please, no flaming, insulting, etc.
No answer is wrong, just be wary of how it may affect others.

Well Religion is mostly based on faith which has little or nothing to do with Science . So not really . Religion is like the opposite of Science .In Science you need proof and you need to show what happened and under what circumstances did it happen under . In Religion you just ... as they say .... hope and pray or go with the flow

Honestly, no. Science is the acceptance of proven or near so facts.
Religion is the opposite.
To that end things proven by science are often at odds with religion.
I feel since science is based on proof people link it to their religion to validate it.
This typically requires ignoring large chunks of both.

Their are certain parts which arent at odds, but thats typically because the religious texts dont talk about them.

I guess it depends on what religion we're talking about, some religions such as Buddhism don't make any theistic or supernatural claims, so it could be compatible with science. But any religion that makes a supernatural claim, is not compatible with science because the supernatural cannot be tested empirically.

The big bang is simply the theoretical explanation of the expansion of our universe, it might be the case that there was some sort of deity involved, but until that hypothesis can be empirically tested, it remains unscientific.

it depends more on the person than the religion. if one realizes that their teachings from ancient times are nothing more then a guide to tell them how to live, then perhaps it could coincide with science. theres nothing wrong with believing you should do good to others, or whatever your morals are, and if it took a religion to teach you them than whats the problem?

oh wait. most religions teach you to murder people and enslave them, where as science teaches you to disect already dead people, and try to cure their diseases. no. they cannot possibly coincide.

Religion is not inherently opposed to science. Fideism is inherently opposed to reason, but not all religions are fideist.

Aristotle was religious, but his religion was required to be conform to reason. He didn't have a lot of data so his reason was misled, but his belief in God's existence and Aristotle's thoughts on God all were achieved by reason.

In Christianity, Catholicism demands the synthesis of faith and reason. My own Christian beliefs say that God is Reason (Greek word for "the word was God" in John 1 is
logos, meaning "word" and "logic" simultaneously).

Religion and science should not have any sort of war between them. They should be used together.

It depends sometimes. There are, and have been, lots of Christian scientists. They can be together in harmony, as long as it's treated carefully.

Well, in a way, it's really depending on how you look at it, because they're something known as religious science so in a way, that does sound a little bit of confusion for Religion-only people and science-only people, but in a way, to my point of view, that could be more of a good thing, two group of people that hate each other working together, I think that's a great thing to do. A lot of people view their different believes on how like they look at, like if they rather go with religion or rather go with science, it's really up to them.

Sidewinder : I got to agree with you, no one is going to be exactly sure 100% on how the universe if it was really a "Big Bang" or God created the whole universe, the only thing is that no one will ever know, so this is mostly one of the toughest questions in history, "how exactly was the universe created?"

Well I'm going to say it depends on how you look at it. Of course there are going to be things in science that are debated over until people know the truth. Likewise, there are also things in religion that aren't explain. Honestly? I think that Religion and Science fit in together only if you realize that Science can explain things and actually bring some people closer to an actual religion. Likewise, a religion may bring a person closer to science. As humans we all have a natural urge to seek the truth. Both religion and Science reveal aspects of various truths and therefore should go hand in hand.

Personally, I couldn't bring myself to combine science and religion since they both poke too many holes in each other. But that could just be me, I am a 'godless heathen b*tch" according to some.

I suppose it could be done, like angelbear said it might bring people closer to their god.

I am what I like to call a Modern Christian, While I do believe in God, I believe in him in more of a sense of Heaven or hell being a place to go after I die, and that Jesus died on the cross for my sins, But otherwise I do hold science in high regard and I am very much interested in things like The Big Bang and Evolution, So while in my mind god does exist, so does science, because unlike religion and faith, science has proof that I can see and experience to back it up. its a strange little complex in my mind.

some of it can be, I haven't really looked into it.
But im going to copy and paste something I found called "Scientific Facts in the Quran'
Scientific Facts in the Quran
The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the 7th century.
Science at the time was primitive, there were no telescopes, microscopes or anything even close to the technology we have today. People believed that the sun orbited the earth and that the sky was held up by big pillars at the corners of a flat earth. Within this backdrop the Quran was revealed, and it contains many scientific facts on topics ranging from astronomy to biology, geology to sociology.
Some people may claim that the Quran was changed as new scientific facts were discovered but this cannot be the case because it is a historically documented fact that the Quran is preserved in its original language [2]. The Quran was written down and memorised by people during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). One of the copies of the Quran which was written a few years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is preserved in a museum in Uzbekistan. This copy is over 1400 years old and is exactly the same as the Arabic Quran that we have today[3].
The following are nine scientific facts found in the Quran:
1. Origin of Life
Water is essential for all living things. We all know that water is vital to life but the Quran makes a very unusual claim:
We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe? [21:30]
In this verse water is pointed out as the origin of all life. All living things are made of cells. We now know that cells are mostly made up of water [4]. For example, 80% of the cytoplasm (basic cell material) of a standard animal cell is described as water in biology textbooks.
The fact that living things consist mostly of water was discovered only after the invention of the microscope. In the deserts of Arabia, the last thing someone would have guessed is that all life came from water.
Iron is not natural to the earth. It did not form on the earth but came down to earth from outer space. This may sound strange but it’s true. Scientists have found that billions of years ago the earth was stuck by meteorites. These meteorites were carrying Iron from distant stars which had exploded [5].
The Quran says the following on the origin of Iron:
We sent down Iron with its great inherent strength and its many benefits for humankind [57:25]
God uses the words ‘sent down’ for Iron. It is clear from the verse that Iron is not an earthly material, but was sent down for the benefit of humanity. The fact that Iron came down to earth from outer space, is something which could not be known by the primitive science of the 7th century.
The sky plays a crucial role in protecting the earth. The sky protects the earth from the lethal rays of the sun. If the sky did not exist then the sun’s radiation would have killed off all life on earth. It also acts like a blanket wrapped around the earth, to protect it from the freezing cold of space. The temperature just above the sky is approximately -270oC. If this temperature was to reach earth then the planet would freeze over instantly. The sky also protects life on earth by warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night [6]. These are some of the many protective functions of the sky.
The Quran asks us to consider the sky in the following verse:
We made the sky a protective ceiling. And yet they are turning away from Our signs! [21:32]
The Quran points to the sky’s protection as a sign of God. The protective properties of the sky were discovered by scientific research conducted in the 20th century.
The Quran draws our attention to a very important characteristic of mountains:
Did We not make the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes? [78:6-7]
The Quran indicates that mountains have deep roots by using the word stakes to describe them. In fact mountains do have deep roots [7], and the word stakes is an accurate description for them. A book titled ‘Earth’ by Geophysicist Frank Press explains that mountains are like stakes, and are buried deep under the surface of the earth [8].Mount Everest (pictured below), the height of which is approximately 9 km above ground, has a root deeper than 125 km.
The fact that mountains have deep ‘stake’ like roots was not known, until after the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the beginning of the 20th century [9].
At a time when the science of Astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in Quran:
And it is We who have built the Universe with [Our creative] power and keep expanding it. [51:47]
The fact that the universe is expanding was discovered in the last century. The physicist Stephen Hawking in his book ‘A Brief History of Time’ writes, “The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.”[10].
The Quran mentioned the expansion of the universe even before the invention of the telescope!
In 1512 the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus put forward his theory that the Sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system, and that the planets revolve around it. The belief that the Sun is stationary was widespread amongst astronomers until the 20th century. It is now a well-established scientific fact that the Sun is not stationary, but is moving in an orbit around the centre of our Milky Way galaxy [11].
The Quran mentions the orbit of the Sun:
It is He who created night and day, the Sun and the Moon, each floating in its orbit. [21:33]
The Quran would have been wrong according to astronomers just a couple of decades ago. But we now know that the Quranic account of the Sun’s motion is consistent with modern Astronomy.
Darkness out in a deep ocean which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds, layers of darkness, one upon the other. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. Those God gives no light to, they have no light. [24:40]
It is commonly thought that waves only occur on the surface of the ocean. However oceanographers have discovered that there are internal waves that take place below the surface of the ocean. These waves are invisible to the human eye, and can only be detected by specialist equipment [12]. The Quran mentions darkness in a deep ocean above which are waves, above which are waves, then clouds above that. This description is not only remarkable because it describes the internal waves in the ocean, but also because it describes darkness deep in the ocean. A human being can dive no more than 70 metres without breathing equipment. Light is present at that depth, but if we go down 1000 metres it is completely dark [13]. 1400 years ago there were no submarines or specialist equipment to discover internal waves or the darkness deep inside the oceans.
There was a cruel oppressive tribal leader named Abu Jahl who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). God revealed a verse of the Quran to warn him:
No Indeed! If he does not stop, We will seize him by the forehead, his lying, sinful forehead. [96:15-16]
God does not call this person a liar, but calls his forehead (the front part of the brain) ‘lying’ and ‘sinful’, and warns him to stop.
This verse is significant for two reasons. The first is that the front part of our brain is responsible for voluntary movement [14] .This is known as the frontal lobe. A book titled ‘Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology’ which includes the results of research on the functions of this area states: The motivation and the foresight to plan and initiate movements occur in the anterior portion of the frontal lobes, the prefrontal area [15]. The part of the brain that is responsible for movement is said to be seized if the man does not stop.
Secondly, numerous studies have shown that this same region (frontal lobe) is responsible for the lying function of the brain [16].One such study at the University of Pennsylvania in which volunteers were asked questions during a computerized interrogation, it was found that when the volunteers were lying there was significantly increased activity in the prefrontal and premotor cortices (frontal lobe region) [17].
The front part of the brain is responsible for movement and lying. The Quran links movement and lying to this area. These functions of the frontal lobe were discovered with medical imaging equipment which was developed in the 20th century.
For a long time it was thought that the sense of feeling and pain was dependent on the brain. However it has been discovered that there are pain receptors present in the skin [18]. Without these pain receptors, a person would not be able to feel pain.
Consider the following verse on pain:
We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the (Hell) Fire. When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is Almighty, All-Wise. [4:56]
God tells the people who reject his message that when they are in Hell and their skins are burnt off (so they can’t feel any pain), he will give them new skins so that they continue to feel the pain.
The Quran makes it clear that pain is dependent upon on the skin. The discovery of pain receptors in the skin is a fairly recent discovery for Biology.
Conclusion
These are just some of the many scientific facts found in the Quran. It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science, but that it is consistent with science. To claim that scientific facts in the Quran are due to coincidence would be irrational. The best explanation is that God revealed this knowledge to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).
Just like the Quran contains knowledge about the natural world, it also contains information about the inner dimensions of our souls. It relates to our feelings, wants and needs. The Quran informs us that we have a purpose in life, and that following God’s guidance will lead us to inner peace in this life, and Paradise in the hereafter. And that rejection of his message will lead to depression in this life and Hellfire after death.
We shall show them Our signs in the Universe and within themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is the witness of all things? [Quran 41:53]

I believe in God, and I believe in science. I do not place much stock in the bible, however, because it was writ by man, and man has a nasty way of altering things to benefit themselves.

I believe that science and religion and are compatible, but not completely compatible. Some religious texts can be proved to be true with science. An example is the rainbow. It can be scientifically proven that rainbow are caused by the bending of light traveling through a prism. On the other hand, the big bang and Genesis will be forever debated because there is no proof that either happened.

Religion is a means of providing hope to people, so having an explanation such as "God did it" is enough to give people hope. But that's just my opinion. I respect other people's beliefs and I just hope that you return the favor.

That is purely based on your interpretation of scripture. For you, I would say no. You take the story of Adam and Eve literally. I believe a lot of biblical stories are meant to be lessons in how to live our life in devotion to God. I don't take every little thing literally, but believe in the message. The Bible is not meant to be a scientific/historical explanation of how the world was created. One thing you need to remember is that the Bible was written in a time period where nobody could even come close to understanding the concept of cellular biology, chromosomal heredity, atoms, molecular fusion, etc. So it couldn't go into how a planet is made from the atoms created in the event of a supernova. It can't go into how the fist organisms appeared and changed genetically over time. They would not be able to understand any of it. So God instructed the Bible be written not only in a way they could understand, but in a way that focuses on the important part. God created the Universe. God created the physical laws in which our Universe functions. Upon creating those laws, God orchestrated how all the planets would form (including Earth) and orchestrated which ones could support life. God orchestrated how life on planets can change and develop over time. All of it is God's plan. That is the important part of the Religious aspect of it all. All the details on HOW he did it is not even remotely important in earning his Salvation. You don't go to Hell for believing that there was more to the way God created everything than what the Bible said. Like I said, that was written in a way that people with the scientific knowledge of the people alive at that time could understand. If God had instructed the Bible to be written now instead of then, it would be a LOT different.

I believe science and religion is compatible, but only if you don't interpret scripture written for people with little scientific knowledge compared to now to be literal. If you look at EVERY detail literally, then they can't work together. But regardless, the science aspect is focused on the how. Religious aspect focus on the why and the importance in regards to the meaning of life. In this case, you don't need the scientific 'how' to understand the philosophical 'why', and vice versa. The problem is that a religious person who interprets literal scripture rejects scientific explanation because they don't seem to realize that that detail isn't even a part of the guide to Salvation. For the other side, the problem with a scientific person who rejects religion is that they look at scripture not looking at the important part, which is the lesson and guide to Salvation. They look at the insignificant details of the 'how God did this', which is not the point of the Bible.

im with you and i believe both need each other to survive

i believe that there are multiple religion because over the course of time people use religion to control
and of course broken off into scatter pieces.

religion is a way to live life with a sense of protection, but other use it to perform crazy acts
but i do believe there is a god for example in my perspective is everything althought i'm not religious but i feel that
god is the board of creation for example

we are all children of planet earth all living things on this planet, but planet earth is part of a solar system galaxy, god would be in space or his body is space itself iono LOL

This is a very heavy debate with in Christianity weather to conform science to God or God to science. There is logical arguments for both but there is scientific proof that fulfills prophesies  in the Old Testament.  A good movie to watch on this subject is called the Star of Bethlehem.

I'm bored and need someone to talk to....

[/quote]

This is true, the bible is a manual for how to live life.

[quote]
I don't take every little thing literally, but believe in the message.
[/quote]

I can totally understand that. Your an atheist by what I've gathered, and I'm actually surprised that you look to a book like this for wisdom.

However, I take these messages literally.

But that's not the point of the argument, because that's not the point of the story.

the point of the stories like I you said, is the morals.

Then why does Genesis 1:1 start with "In the beginning GOD...."

if it wasn't trying to explain how it was created then why is the firs t few chapters of Genesis there?

We could have just started with Adam and Eve in the garden for out story where they sinned and fell, am I right?

-----

I'll just say yes on this. they couldn't have understood cellular biology and stuff like that.

But why would they have to?

Seriously, why would they have to?
There more interested In finding food and shelter and starting a civilization.

So you can't really blame them for not trying to know this.

Now that we DO know about all this, does it mean that God does not have to exist?

Of course not, i'll go into this a little bit down the line so hold the phone...

[/quote]

Maybe, it might
worded?differently, but the theme would stay the same because God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

I can understand that we are to take old laws and apply them to today by Gods base theme...love one another as yourself.

Let's take an instance such as....texting and driving,

The bible says that we are to have respect for one another's right to live and texting and driving doesn't really respect live very much because it can lead to death easily.

that would be one example.

So that statement is correct, but it's not.

moving on.

Well, I see what your mean.

When Saul said that God will place you under his wings of protection, he didn't mean that God is a giant bird.

Or that God's word is sweeter then honey....

(Though Ezekiel had a dream of eating a bible scroll)

/ this

Many, many, people don't understand that this is how it works.

They think they are saved because the follow the works of the bible but do not know Jesus and have him in their hearts.

Now I do take the bible literally (unless we are talking about the wings of protection and other hyperboles) I believe that Sodom and Gomorah were destroyed in fire and ashes.

And that the egyptians did drownd in the red sea and leave behind the wreckage.

You may find me a gullible chap, but I choose to believe this because I do, and I have been given considerable proof for doing so.

Anyway, I hope I have shedding some light on this.

E: why is the second part of my post in bold and unfixable?

I'm bored and need someone to talk to....
