The other night I watched The Blues Brothers for the umpteenth time (I don't know how many times I've seen it over the years, but it's been quite a few), which inspired me to create a thread about it. If you're not familiar with the movie, I'll give you the basic plot of it:

After serving three years for armed robbery, Jake Blues (played by John Belushi) is released from prison and picked up by his brother Elwood (played by Dan Aykroyd). They visit the orphanage where they grew up and learn that it will be closed unless $5,000 in property taxes is paid. After realizing that they'll have to earn the money instead of stealing it, the brothers head to a church service where Jake has an epiphany: they can legitimately raise the money by re-forming their rhythm and blues band. So, needless to say, they set off in search of their band members (who Elwood was supposed to stay in touch with while Jake was in prison).

That's the basic gist of the plot, but it gets more complicated as it goes on. I didn't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen the movie, so I thought I'd give you the most basic idea of what it's about. My favourite songs from the movie are Shake Your Tail Feather, Everybody Needs Somebody (To Love), and Sweet Home Chicago. All the other songs are great too, but those 3 are the ones I like the most.

So, have you ever seen The Blues Brothers? If so, which song from it is your favourite?

I have never seen it, but it sounds interesting. I will have to check it out sometime.

I also believe that until they released the sequel,it held the world record for most vehicles destroyed in one film. Excellent film

I actually have never seen this before and it does sound like a good movie. I am sure my parents have seen it and they can give me some feedback on it and maybe I could watch it with them some time. From the description you gave though, it sounds like it would be a pretty good movie to watch.

I've never seen it but it sounds quite interesting indeed, now that I know of it I might just check it out some day!

FallenElm : Yep, I'm pretty sure the sequel beat the original for how many cars were destroyed (I don't think it was by much though).

Since it's TDV time again, I just thought I'd bump this thread in case any newer users wanted to post in it. I've seen other users do it, so I assume it's okay to do.

Blues Brothers is a classic and I love it.  They have great performances and the comedy from back in the day was spot on.  Everyone could dance, sing, get laughs and act.  My favorite part was when the kid was trying to steal the guitar from Stevie Wonder's store and he pulled out the massive hand cannon and shot at the kid.  That was hilarious.

And when they were singing in the country bar... great.

And the police chase through the mall.... perfect.

And the penguin slapping them with the yard stick.  Glorious.

Never seen it, but I really should see it sometime. I heard good things about it.

The Blues Brothers is a great film even though it is a bit of a musical. I don't call it a musical because I like it and I usually hate musicals. 
My favourite scenes are the car chases, the one through the shopping mall and the epic one with 100s and 100s of cars.

I have never watch the sequel though, is it just called Blues Brothers 2?

I've seen it quite a few times and would recommend everyone sees it.

Unfortunately, the sequel really isn't that great...no one can replace John Belushi...

I've seen the first one.  Also talked to a couple of guys, who have an American police car.  Done up like the one in the film, complete with the huge loudspeaker.  This also works!!  Can't beat  "Shake your tail feathers" being played from it. 

warmaker : It was actually Ray Charles as the owner of the store, not Stevie Wonder. But I agree that all the parts you mentioned are great.

MechaMento : I know, I don't like musicals either, but I love this one (even though not all of the movie is a musical). I don't think it was hundreds of cars for the second chase, I think they ended up wrecking about 60-70 of them (approximately). I guess it just seems like that there were a lot more than there actually was. The sequel is called Blues Brothers 2000, but I don't think it was anywhere near as good as the original.

vanelan : Yep, I think it's a great movie too. I didn't think the sequel was that good either. There was actually supposed to be a prequel called Return of the Blues Brothers which would have detailed how the band originally met (not in real life, but in the context of the movie), but the idea was scrapped after John Belushi died. It sounds like a much better idea than the sequel that we ended up with.

tornadocam : Yeah, there's plenty of funny moments, aren't there? Sadly, I have tortured myself by watching Blues Brothers 2000 (a few times actually), and I think that the only good thing about it was the music.

nightfireplunder : Is it an actual 1974 Dodge Monaco (which was the car they used as the Bluesmobile in the movie) or is it something similar? It's okay if you don't know, I was just wondering was all.

I have watched The Blues Brothers with my uncle many times when I was little; I honestly don't remember much of it but now that I've read your post, I'm going to watch it again!
