Is this game grand, or terrible?

That's my job to answer.

Super Smash Bros. The classic fighting Nintendo game that almost every gamer has played in their lives. Released in the April of 1999, this game took the world as a surprise. This was the first of its kind that Nintendo had released. A beat 'em up consisting of different Nintendo franchises had never been thought of ever before by anyone. Not very much companies had thought of a beat 'em up game like this. And that was a good thing. Just in the U.S., it sold 2.93 million copies. In Japan, it sold 1.97 million copies. That, plus other countries, makes it 5 million copies sold world wide.

As you can see, this game was obviously a great success for Nintendo and its business partners. They made more after this classic game. As a review author, it's my job to show off whether or not this game is worth it. Now, I present you, my 3rd review. Specifically for the classic Super Smash Bros.

Graphics - 8
Yes. 8. These graphics, to say the least, are divine for when this game was developed. 1999. Many people think it was in the 2000s when this was released. It wasn't. And this 8 is what I think what the graphics are. I'll elaborate.

First off, to start this review off, are the characters. For 1999, the attempt at 3D characters were simply amazing. Sure, a few graphics weren't drawn to scale as others were, but look at it. Isn't it amazing how they made this? Each of the characters are made up nicely, from Luigi to Jigglypuff. Each individual curve and motion of the character is how it basically be if it were real life. The enemies that aren't characters are also made to perfection. Let's take Master Hand. He ACTUALLY looks like a hand. And a really good one, too. The color shows as if the character was real and wearing a glove. Or the polygon team. They were made to show the overall lines and corners of each character. And boy, did they do a job. Not only were the polygon team members pretty, they were perfectly made. You can basically call it a skeleton of a real character. And it's amazing. The characters were the strongest point in the graphics.

Secondly, the battlefields. Although they were just a tad bit less impressive than the characters, they were great, nonetheless. Each one was great, showing almost every franchise the game consisted of. One that comes to mind is the Silph Co. course for Pokemon. That one was amazing. It had a great background, actual buildings to stand on, stuff like that. Sure, they were small, but remember. This was 1999. How much graphics could they squeeze into the game? I was a bit disappointed in those Pokemon that pop out and attack on the Silph Co. course, but it wasn't too bad. They were 2D and a bit ugly, but, meh. Another example for a battlefield is the DK field. A nice, original field it is. It's like a bridge sort of thing. The background looks like it were a real jungle, and the field itself was beautifully displayed. They showed the courses off quite well, for the day and age they were in.

Thirdly, and overall lastly for the graphics, were the items. The items were less impressive than the other things above, to be completely honest. I wasn't as impressed, though I should be. They did a nice job with them. I was pretty amazed at a few of them, but others, not so much. They were, for the most part, 2D. The graphics were a bit blurrier and more pixelized. They squeezed most of the graphics into the battlefields and characters, so naturally the space left in the game for items was a bit cramped, and I get that. I just think they could have done a bit better, but I don't blame them. They did a good job, but they could have been cleaner and more organized. This was really the main factor in the reduction of the graphics score.

Sounds - 9

For a game in the 90s, the sounds were awesome. Really fun, invigorating, and gets you in the mood for a battle. I really loved the sounds a lot. This was probably the best aspect of the game, if not the graphics. I'll explain a bit about this.

First off, the music in general. Do you want to know how AWESOME they sounded? Sometimes, they were something from another game of the franchise, or it was just freshly composed music. Some music was funky and made you want to dance your way to victory. Other music made you want to fight and beat your enemy's butt right off. Others were just soothing, relaxing music. Whatever it was, it was good music. It was all really enjoyable and fun, and fit the appearance or mood of the course or item. The Star Fox one, for example. If you're on a mothership in space outside of Sector Z fighting for your life, do you want good music to fit the mood? No. But this game did it anyways, and did an amazing job fitting the mood of outer space fighting. The beat of the music made you fight in a rhythm, or the overall music pumped you up if you were in the dumps. Or, take the star power music for example. It was from the original Mario game, and I loved it there. But in this game, it was a bit revamped, and it was really good. The music was fabulous.

Second, the noises the characters or items make that aren't music. The sounds are great. The noises sound clear and not foggy at all. It's really nice, and not some evil cat screeching if you get it. It's a soft thuump or an oof! if they get hit. And they are clear. I just can't say that enough. Take Pikachu for example. His "Pika!" isn't some fat 30 year old saying "Pika" into a mic while drunk. It's a clear, mouselike noise that sounds like an actually Pokemon if it were real. Or the thunder Pikachu uses, for example. It's pretty realistic. You can hear a rumble of thunder, and then when the bolt hits Pikachu, bzzt! It sounds like Pikachu was actually shocked by a lightning bolt. Not only is it Pikachu, but Mario and others, too. Mario yells "Yahoo!" and his other character quotes too. All really clear. Let's take an item, like the crate for example, too. If you hit it, it rumbles as if you kicked a box with items in it. If you break it, it (kind of) sounds like wood broke. Point being, these noises are clear.

Third, the noises the attacks make. I scraped the topic of this with Pikachu's bolt to prove a little point. But to me, it's more than a bolt. It's much more. Like the bolt, other attacks make really nice and corresponding noises. Like Mario's fireball. When you released it, it made a little ploop sort of noise. As it bounced, it made some more noises, then stopped. Or, if it hit someone, it sounded like a little ignition of flames, well, igniting on the opponent for a split second or two. Or Fox's gun. It makes a "pew" sort of sound, making it sounds like a stereotypical gun. Considering it's a laser gun, it actually fits the mood of the gun. Or even punches and kicks. If you don't hit something, it was basically the swooshing of air around the attack. If it hits, it sounds like a thud against something. It really makes sense, and it really intrigues me how they did it in the year of 1999. It was a really nice aspect. All of these were.

Addictiveness - 9

This game is very addictive. A nine. Why? I'll explain.

It had a really nice way of wrapping many things up. I'll explain in different views of the game.

The Battle and Practice modes will be the first aspect I'll hit. These modes are where the characters are pit together into a fight, obviously. The battle mode has sort of a story mode... Like I said, sort of. It's a line of battles with different characters, with different stages. It starts out easy, and gets harder when you progress. There are some stages with just one enemy, a team of them, or Master Hand (dun dun dun). You can play on different stages of difficulty, including Very Easy, Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard. Each one is, as you guessed it, different in difficulty. I'll explain more about these later, though. My point is this part is VERY fun if you don't mind mild repetitiveness. The bosses are hard, the characters can be hard, it's just... wow. The practice mode isn't really meant for fun, but for practicing your skills or trying to try out some moves. It helps you hone your skills and stuff like that. It can be fun if you want to sort of play around with the menu, but that's not as fun. I'll go really into depth for this later, but as of now, I'm just gonna lay it down here: The battle mode is very fun depending on difficulty, but practice isn't meant to be.

Next, the target practice mode. This can be pretty fun, I'll say. People don't think so, but this can actually amuse you. Every character has a different course and set of stages. It's very fun if you just want to chill out and sort of break just, well, break targets. I'll try to explain. Each set is very fun due to the twist or turns they implemented into the game. Some places do have glitches where you can cheat, though, but I don't want to get into that. All I'll say about the glitches is that it makes it a bit less fun, due to the fact it becomes easier. But that's not important. What is is that the fact is, they made it harder than the other aspects, really. There are no difficulty levels, but there are places they made it so you can't use a certain move, hit the target easily, etc. It's pretty fun, to be honest. It's underrated, and really can be worth it if you really try to have fun with it.

Lastly about this, the board the platforms stages. These aren't as fun, but that's my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty fun. Although, it's not as fun as the other two categories. It's slightly easier, and the courses are a bit easier, as well. There are, however, twists that make it fairly difficult, which is the part that makes it pretty nice. It's basically where you navigate around a puzzle of a stage, and get on a platform. That confirms you've "boarded" it, and you go to the next one. It's easier in the sense that you get extra standing places, but harder in the sense of, well, stage designs. It's not repetitive, as they're in different places and on different stages for each character, like many people think. Even though I don't enjoy it that much, but it is also underrated. The fanbase of this part is low, but for no exact reason. I personally think it's not too bad, but could be better. It depends on opinion and how you like things, really.

Completing some missions on these modes can get you up to four bonus characters! That's sort of worth it, as they are pretty nice overall. Not only that, a stage can be unlocked too. I'll go into these at a later time.

Story - N/A

There is no story in this game, like most beat 'em up games there are in the world. However, there is a curious background thing that some people have been wondering I want to address. Here I go:

There's been a rumor ever since this game that this universe is but a bunch of toys. And that could be true. Remember, the characters are thrown out of a chest by "Master Hand" at the beginning in a regular bedroom on a desk with a "stage." The theory is is that the universe is just toys, controlled by a boy or girl. The intro is just an example. Second, the battlers could be a boy who's just playing with his, well, play things. At the end, Master Hand is just when the boy runs out of toys to play with, and just plays with his hand. When you beat the game, remember how the door closes? I bet the boy runs out of things to play with (including his hand) and just leaves after the toy beats the boss. Thirdly, and lastly, the last hint is when you run out of lives and get a "CONTINUE?" screen. The toy is just a ragdoll type thing, surrounded by a child's toy, toy boxes, stuff like that. If you press yes, it jumps up, ready to go.

That was just a fun tidbit I, and many others, had noticed, that I just had to put in the story section.

Depth - 7

I'm giving the depth a 7. Even though what the game modes offers is grand, it doesn't offer very much modes themselves. Only three modes (battle, target, and platforms) is what it gives, or four if you want to count practice mode. I'll elaborate, and I'll try not to offend anyone. I'm going to explain the four modes and what they offer to make the game fun and worth it. Unlike above, practice mode will have its own category, though it may be short. Also, I will briefly scrape the topic of unlockables.

First, let's hit battle mode. This part has 12 different characters to use, four of which that are unlockable. It has a line of battles, each consisting of a different character. I've said before that there can be one enemy, or many of them. You can play as any of the presented characters in the line, except the Polygon Team or Master Hand. There are also different stages for each one, depending on the character. For example. a Mario themed area for the battle against Mario and Luigi. These stages have different nook and crannies, and it depends on what perks are inserted depending on when you fight them. Stages that are a bit at the beginning have less perks against you, but near the end, the perks work against you (Master Hand's, however, is plain and has no advantages or disadvantages). There are different difficulties that I explained above. Those are basically how hard or not you want the game to be (explanation later) during your matches. It can vary from Very Easy to Very Hard, and the names sum them up quite well. There are also lives in battle mode, and you can choose how much you want. This is also a good feature for people who want to choose a difficulty of their choice, but want to make it easier (or spice it up.). This part has a great offer. The battle part is amazing, hands down. Overrated, sure. But worth it.

Secondly, practice mode. This'll be a short part of depth. Practice mode is basically battle mode, but with much more freedoms. There is no line of characters, but just where you can choose a character, an enemy, and what stage you want. It's where you can test items, moves on an enemy, or fight it out without going in a huge line. There are no level of difficulties on this part, so I guess the enemy is Normal difficulty, but don't quote me on that. You can switch camera views, how fast it all goes, what items you want, what the enemy does, and so on. Pretty much just a place where a person can play around or, well, just practice and hone his skills. That's really what's to practice mode on Super Smash Bros. Not very impressive, but generally useful for when you just can't get it going, or if you're new.

Thirdly, target practice. I've scraped this a little bit, but never really got to finish. This has no difficulties, so I'll assume it's just normal mode. What this is for is for entertainment and some extra points in battle mode. What you've got to do is simple: Clear all of the targets as fast as possible. For each character, the targets are mixed up, and the stages are all different. Each stages matches some theme of the character you use for the mission. Each stage has some sort of oddity or perk that makes it harder or unique, and make it so you take a while. Sometimes, it gets repetitive. But it is pretty fun. At some points, they make you think of what to do. Do they want you to jump, or shoot a ranged weapon at it? It's the thrill of it. Not only that, but some of these targets are placed in areas where you have to think about where to go. Sometimes, one wrong move can mean a huge failure. It's underrated, and at some points repetitive, but overall, it's pretty fun. Harder courses and target areas = The amount of fun you have!

Fourthly, is platform practice. Yes, I've talked about it and how I don't really like it that much as I could. But that doesn't mean it's not a good point of the game. It's fairly enjoyable, and surely is pretty nice. Basically, you have to board platforms as, you guessed it, fast as possible. The plan is to successfully board them. This doesn't make you think as much, due to the fact that you can stand on these, but still, you have to be pretty strategic. If you jump down too far to hit a platform, you may not be able to get back up. It's actually sort of like target practice. Each stage has some hard part in it, and some platforms that are placed oddly. It's pretty thrilling at some points. You can decide on what to do on each platform, though, which is what turns me down to it. But do not get me wrong. If you like this part of the game, that's great. It's underrated, and is actually pretty fun. I just don't have the taste to like it as much.

Now, I want to scratch a topic I wanted to address really quickly. Unlockables. Unlockable characters and stages are those that require a mission to unlock them. There are four bonus characters and one unlockable stage. I'm not going to spoil how to get them for you, but I may in a future post. Try to find and do missions, and you'll get new things and features.

Difficulty - 5 / N/A

I bet you were about to rage at ol' goody two shoes for rating difficulty down a lot. Well, I didn't mean it like that. You can't really have a difficulty on this. 5 is half-half, or "not available". This will be a quick and easy ending to a huge review.

First, I want to explain the five choices of difficulty which are only available to you in battle mode, like every beat 'em up:

Very Easy: This is basically, well, the easiest of them all. This is recommended for newer or younger players who can't get it going. You can sort of compare it to the baby steps of this game. The characters are extremely easy to beat and the stages and items work with you.

Easy: The second easiest difficulty. Not much different than above. This is more for people you want to get up from baby steps and work upwards. The characters are harder than before, but still, VERY easy. Not much difference on the stage/item rule.

Normal: You can feel a bit more of a difference here. This is for people who are starting to stand up without a support. The characters are harder, and the items and stages start to work against you. Still, easier than the next two, but starting to get there.

Hard: My personal favorite. This is when stuff really gets difficult. Characters are much harder, and the items/stages are not gonna go for your odds. This is a great difficulty for regular players.

Very Hard: The best of them all. Seriously. This is the hardest thing ever. Characters are REALLY smart, and the items/stages probably aren't gonna help at all at some points. I play on this a lot, but usually end up losing three or more lives. It's awesome, and great for dare devils.

These are basically what they are. You can only choose your difficulty in the battle matches mode. The other modes have set difficulty, which aren't and/or cannot be specified. I like to think of those as "Normal" difficulty, though that may not be what it is. That's about it for difficulty, sadly enough.

Thank you so much for reading an extended review by me, goodboy! I really enjoyed writing this, and got frustrated when I lost the first copy. I made this second copy, and boy, it was beautiful, right? This is my third review, and I really hope you enjoyed it. I hope I didn't hurt anyone during the making of this, and if I did, my regards.

Thanks again!

The theory is is that the universe is just toys, controlled by a boy or girl.

What. The. Heck. How can you write that much about one game? I will have to read this later, I don't have time to read it now. If you are happy with this review, you might want to post a link to it here. Even though the game already has a featured review, if yours is better it can replace it. How much Viz and CP did you earn for this?

Nice job man, this is enormous! I hope to write some 3,000- 4,000 or more walkthroughs during the TDV in an attempt for a jersey or to. Hopefully I will get started soon. I think you did an amazing job with this. Over 3500 is quite impressive for just a review, this is like material for a full out guide! Anyways, awesome work, there is a lot of detailed explanations for you scoring and you also includes a lot of descriptive details in your review as well. I just cannot express how gigantic this is, how long have you been writing or working on this, or have you planned to do it and you just did it all in 1 day?

Overall, great work, this is quite the site to behold and you did a phenomenal job. I look forward to seeing you post more great reviews! This is still huge!!!

Razor-987 :

Thanks! I hope you can try and do that for the Tour de Vizzed! Thank you for all of the compliments. I really appreciate them.

It took me 1 day to write 1.6k words for this. Then, I tried to finish, but site strain made me lose it. Then, this being the second day, I finished it.

So, two days.

Wow... totally awesome! Thanks for summoning me to this... I never lost faith in you, don't worry!  I can tell you put a lot of thought into this.  It seems like there was a very wide variety of music in the game, which surprises me.  What was your favorite piece, if you can remember?

Well. Um, that's quite a lot of information you got there. Heh. Um, just let me uh go get my knife and uh nah I'm just kidding! Wow! You have really outdone yourself! I don't even know where to start! This has to be one of the longest reviews ever. You definitely expanded upon each individual section to no end. If I didn't know what SSB was, I would sure as heck play it after reading this! Great job man!

Thanks! I'm glad you didn't lose faith in me, heehee! It took a while and, yep, lots of though!

Probably the 'vs Mario and Luigi theme' they put in. I mean, sure, it's just the original theme, but, hey, I love it! xD

goodboy, it's best to omit those summons if you want it featured. Since they have nothing to do with the game itself, it already makes the review less likely to be featured.
