Is it more important to be liked, or respected?, well in my opinion it is more important to be respected than liked, because if people like you that just means they like your personality and character traits as a individual and don't really care as much for your ideas or respects what you have to say when stating your preference on a question , now if some one respects you that means the listen to what you have to say and care about the two cents you add when giving your personal preference and takes what you have to say into consideration when making decisions and to me because of that,  respect just means more than being liked.

I take the respect over being well liked, so respect is more important than being liked in my opinion.

I think to truly get the most out of life you need to have both respect and be liked. It's extremely advantageous to be respected by people (professors, bosses, family, friends, etc.), but there is the other side of things were being liked would have more benefits than respect. Friends won't care to hang out with me if they don't like me. Heck, if no one likes me, than I may not have friends at all.  As John Locke said, "[m]an is by nature a social animal."  The point is that they both open up opportunities, and depending on the way you see life (i.e. "I need a good job so I can be successful in my future" or "I want to have people that I care about and care about me; that's what I consider success") is going to determine how much you use of each.

I would go with being respected. In the long run, you will get a lot more out of life if people respect you because being liked and popular can be seen as a false life to some.

It's better to be respected. In life, everyone needs SOME respect from other people. Why'd you even add the "like" part? Everyone's gonna vote for respect! And it's true too! Respect is a key to life. If you don't get or give respect, then you are just wrong...

Respect is basically part of your life. If people just like you, they would just hang out with you more often. If people respect you, no matter if they like or dislike you, they would always respect for what ever you did.

Well I feel it would be a lot better to be respected than to be liked. Not everyone is going to like you and some probably won't even respect you but you have to try hard and earn that respect.. treat others the way you would want to be treated. I would want all the respect in the world rather than to me liked by one person.

i saw this before and decided i had to comment before sleeping.

anyways i feel its both you cant have one without the other i think if your respected your almost likely to be like by that person at the same time if they hated you they wouldn't respect you... so ya i feel both are just as important but overall i say neither are truly needed sure they make you feel great but i find more so these days that my life is better off not trying to worry about these things as you cant please everyone i use to try doing that i was a crowd-pleaser and i must say it never ended well... but ya its nice but overall not a important thing i think ^^

well that's it have a good night or day to any who read this ^^

This is most definitely a "respect is better discussion" thing. It's harder to be respected than to be liked. Being respected is also more significant in the long term. Being liked is unreliable when by specific people. They could possibly be gone and take their liking with them. And then you have nothing. Respect, however, is more long term in the sense that if someone respects you, there's a higher chance the respect will spread around because it doesn't matter if your actions or decisions are liked or not, they can still respect your decision or action. You earn likes. You gain respect. That is all I can think of on the matter currently.

When it comes to publicity and politics, it's more important to be liked. The best examples I can see are Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. When it came down to it, neither were respected at all. Since the public liked them they were incredibly successful.

But for the rest of us, it's better to be respected by friends than liked since friends will take advantage of those they don't respect. At that point, the friendship will be mostly on a give basis with nothing in return besides friendship. It's just not worth it.

Respect is very important, thought being liked and respected are similar. If someone likes me, but can't respect me as a human being, why should I let that person be around me? Respect is important for self confidence, which is something everyone needs in their lives if they want to go anywhere. Plus, if I need advice, I'm going to go to a responsible person that I look up to, rather than the ditz that everyone likes.

It depends on whom you're talking about.  I want to be respected by my coworkers and those I'm in charge of.  I don't care if they like me as long as they do their job.  I make sure they're treated well by their bosses and the clients and members and I make sure they get paid and get their time off.  I also make sure they have enough fun to make the work day go by as painless as possible.

My friends?  I want them to like me.  They think I'm hilarious, they think I drink too much, and they love to see what happens as that goes down.  None of them want to me to date their sisters and I don't think they respect me so much as enjoy being around me.  I'd rather they like me then respect me.

It simply depends on who is feeling those emotions.  Everyone is different and it's important to get reactions of different kinds from different people.

Its honestly hard to say and dependent on several factors. Ends don't necessarily justify means, so it depends on why you're liked or respected. If you have either for the wrong reasons, neither is important IMHO. The journey is more important than either destination in this case.

I would probably say that being respected is more important than being liked.

Like there can be someone who is extremely famous and liked but yet, he/she is disrespected and made fun of by some others.

And there can be someone who is not liked, but yet, others respect him/her for what he/she does or think... etc.

Though in my opinion, most respected people are usually also liked at the same time, Well, based on what I have seen, however, if I had to choose between being like or being respected more, I would most likely choose respected. Popularity means nothing to me.

Being respected is far more important than being liked. If you believe the Bible, Jesus said "Woe unto you when all men shall speak well of you". Even for those that don't, it's still true that someone that everyone likes never ends up being respectable or going anywhere in life.

If you do what's right, there will always be people that don't like you, and only yes men can be liked by all. I believe you should try to be likable, but not at the expense of no longer being respectable.
