I'm not  a seasoned Sonic veteran, so I guess I will be alone on this: Sonic Heroes. I don't know why exactly, but there was some kind of charm to this game, seeing three friends work together defeating the enemies and passing the obstacles. Too bad the sensitive controlls smelled. ^^'

While Sonic 2 is the best Sonic game in many respects, my favorite Sonic game is Sonic Generations.  Sonic Generations fixed the wonky camera work and glitches of Sonic Adventure without making many concessions.  While there is no longer a full, free-roaming world, there is a much greater sense of pure, unbridled SPEED, which is largely what the Sonic series is about.  Plus it brought in the best of both generations, hence the name.  A few missteps here and there prevent the game from being perfect, but the game matches and even surpasses the 2D Sonic games in overall quality.

Overall, I'd say my favorite is Sonic The Hedgehog 3. It's just a really great piece of story and gaming history. If you count the & Knuckles extension, it's perfect to the end.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3&Knuckles. This game is great and its stands tall as #1 on my top 5 favorite Sonic games. The level design is great(barring few areas), the music is great, the bosses are great, and its so much fun. I love this game and I don't think that I'll ever refuse to play this game when I get the chance.
