I just started a few weeks ago too!  ()
And I must say, I really do like it.  It's so much more relaxed and flexible than high school, so that part totally makes me happy
It also helps that I'm taking online classes for it too, I suppose ;D

Yeah I agree. There is a lot more freedom in college than there ever was in high school. Taking classes online is very convenient.

I had just started college a few weeks ago and I absolutely love my classes and the amount of freedom that I have. For instance, I only have class four days a week, aside from Saturday and Sunday, I also get Wednesday off, which eventually will help with me with stress I may acquire later in the semester.

On days that I do have class, Mondays and Thursdays are the best days of the week. On those days, my first class of the day starts at 9AM, which means I have to leave my house just before 8 because it takes just about an hour to get to school. Because of this, I normally wake up at about 7. This is way better than high school because my first class back during senior year started at 7:30 and it took longer to get to school which meant that I had to get up at 5AM!

My first class of the day on Mondays and Thursdays is called Current Issues in Sports. This is a really fun class that is taught by somebody who was once a college coach. So far this year for the class, we watched a video, we read a few articles, and we talked about a variety of current and past issues that face sports in various aspects such as Student Athletes being paid.

Just a few days ago I made a packet that contained a few articles that I have researched that go back to the mid 80's from the New York Times and we are currently preparing for our first test of the semester.

That class ends at 10:30 and then I have an hour and a half of free time. There are many things that I can do during my free time here on campus. Sometimes I can go down to the fitness center and work out for a bit. The fitness center is actually really good, and I like it. There are also two places I can go to go on the computer (not the library, I like public libraries and my high school library but the college library scares me.)

If I spend my time on the computer, I can do one of two things. I can either do my homework, or I can post here. There are also various places I can go to eat, there is a Burger King, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, a buffet style dining hall, and a dozen other places I can go to have lunch.

At about noon, I begin to walk towards my next class which begins at 12:15. My next class of the day is Speech. This class is so much fun, the work we do is somewhat easy and the professor is awesome. I have done about two assignments this semester so far and in a couple of days, on Thursday, I have to give my first speech of the semester.

I have a lot to compete with for my speech because I will be the last one to present. The speech is about what you are an expert in. One student did a speech on how he is an expert on the Madden video games, one student did her speech on how she is an expert in writing, and one kid even said he is an expert in lying.

Unfortunate, my speech is not that interesting. My speech is going to be on card tricks. I was originally going to do something on sports, or maybe even on Sherlock Holmes but the professor used pinatas as an example , so I decided to use card tricks. As a way to make sure that everybody likes my speech, I bought a giant bag of candy that I am going to hand out during my speech.

Speech ends at 1:50PM and then I am free for the day. Now I am free to do any of my regular free time events, or I can do any other random things, or I can just go home and sleep.

Tuesday and Fridays are my hardest days of the week. My first class of the day also starts at 9AM and is another sports class that is like the one I have on Mondays and Thursdays but has a really long name. To start off the class, we go over current sports related events and articles that we find during the weeks. We also go over a few PowerPoint slides that show us various definitions and meanings of various sport management and legal terms.

This class is also a lot of fun because we get to learn about all of these great historical figures that shaped the way sports work, and some of these people I have never heard of and are really interesting. This class is also where I learned that Manchester United is one of the few sport franchises that have publicly traded stock. Because of this, I ended up buying five shares of the team.

After that class, I go straight to my next class which starts at 10:40. This class is called the Sociology of Sports, which also happens to be where I am right now. We also go over current events in this class and we also go over the basics of sociology while merging that field into sports, which is a lot of fun.

This class ends at about noon and then I get my hour and a half of free time. After my free time on these days, I go to my last class which starts at 1:50PM. This class is Philosophy. Some people would say that a class such as this would be very complex and extremely boring. I agree with those people on the first part, the class can get super complicated, but if you know whats going on, the class can be a lot of fun, and you can also learn a lot of valuable information.

Currently, in Philosphy, I am working on my first paper which is about reasons for doing things. The paper is about three pages long, and I am about 50-50 on it. I think I did good on it, but I also am worried that I am not going to get a good grade on it. I would also like to note that the professor makes me think of Andy Sandberg. This class ends at 3:20PM and then I am free. That paper is actually due when I get to class in about an hour.

On Fridays at five, there is a cool event where the school offers free coffee and donuts for all the students. There are also a ton of other things to do on my campus. For instance, during the second week of school, we had a giant activities fair where all the clubs had tents set up where we can see what they do and join random clubs.

One club I found was the Sports Management Association which was a club that I had joined before the year started but I was able to learn more about what they do. I also liked what I found about the Public Relations Committee. I don't have class on Wednesday but if I join Public Relations, I would have to go to meetings every Wednesday at 4PM.

I had also joined a club that is called the Commuter Connection Committee which is exactly what it sounds like, a group of commuters get together and talk about stuff. I also looked into joining the newspaper and the magazine since I love to write so much. In total, I think there was about 150 clubs there.

There was also another event that was exactly the same, except there were less clubs and each club offered free dessert to everybody who came by. There was a student wellness expo where everybody received free smoothies among other things.

One of the best things about my school is my job, that's right, I have an on campus job. Not just any job, I am an even staff member and I work at some of the sporting events. I had worked at four games this year, two women's soccer matches and two men's soccer matches. For one of those games, I worked as an usher in the stands and for the other games I worked by the goals as security and I would get the ball if it left the field. I love this job, it's one of the best things you can get paid to do.

Then, of course there are the actual sports teams, in which we have some of the best teams in the country. As of September 24th, the Men's team was 5-2, we haven't lost a home game, and we are ranked #9. Then there is the Women's team which is even better. The Women's team one each if their first six games of the season and probably has one of the best players in NCAA history. Of the 300 or so players in the conference, this one player leads the entire conference in possibly as many as five different categories.

Next, there will be the basketball team. The basketball season has not started yet but the school is expected to have one of the best teams that we have had in the past 20 or so years. The school even had famous sports stars attend here, we had a few great basketball players, soccer stars, baseball legends, and golf machines.

All right, you guys win. I will go ahead and tell you what school I go to. I go to Saint John's University. Basketball players who have graduated from here include Metta World Peace who now plays for the Knicks, Walter Berry, Mark jackson, Chris Mullin, and a few others. Baseball players include John Franco, and Frank Viola. Other sports stars include Connor lade and Keegan Bradley (Winner of the 2011 PGA Tour.)

I was a bit nervous when I started my first day of school, there was only about two or three kids who went to my high school so I was worried that it would take too long for me to meet any new people, and I am still a bit worried about that, I still have not met anybody new. During the last few days of July, I had my two day, overnight orientation for school and I was able to meet a few people, but I have not seen some of them since that event. The orientaion was a blast though, and the orientation leaders were amazing. We played all sorts games and had fun.The last competition we did had a $200 prize and my team was one of the four to make it to the final round. Unfortunately, the person we picked to answer the questions couldn't do anything because his buzzer was broken.

As it turns out, the orientation leader who was in charger of my group also happens to be the president of the Sports club, so I guess  will be seeing him a few times during the year. There were also a few other people who were in my orientation group that were majoring in Sport Management, like me.

The biggest mistake that I made this year was offering to help the people who are residents and do not know the city. Months before school started, I made a post on Twitter saying that I would tell anybody who's not from the city where to go and how to get there. Within one hour I had over a hundred replies from all these various people because they did not know where to go or how the subway system works. It took me weeks to sort all of that out and I made a promise to myself that I would never do something like that ever again unless I have the time and the strength to do something that tiring.

I hope that I can have more great times like the ones I mentioned throughout the rest of the semester. I hope all you other college and future college students can also have a great time in school. I want you all to try to make the best of everything you encounter.

zanderlex : Wow that's quite the reply.

I am only 14, so I will not be starting college anytime soon. I want to go to college when I graduate though. I get really good grades, so I should be able to get into a pretty good college.

zanderlex :  That is quite an amazing post.  LOL How did you find the time to write all that up if you're in college?

Oh man... I gotta be honest... college was WAY, WAY better than high school, but I'm also so glad it's over.  I liked the fact that classes were at various times, allowing for jobs or hobbies.  I loved the fact that you could take classes based off being a morning person or afternoons person.  Heck, you could even take night classes if you wanted.

I adored the fact that people left you alone, and that most students were mature enough to take fault for their own wrong-doings.

I didn't find college work load to be overwhelming, but I did hate writing papers.  I've always hated research, and there was an awful lot of it while getting my degree.

Other small things that made college great?  Being able to bring a whole pizza to class if you so desired.  Getting to goof off on your laptop in the boring classes you knew you'd pass....

Did I really just say that?
zanderlex :  That is quite an amazing post.

I had started the high school and I want to say four words: the school is boring!
Don't get me wrong, guy, but, seriously, who likes the school and likes tho hang out every morning??

Personly, the school is boring! only when I see my friends I start to be happy, in rest, no!
