Ah Kirby, who doesn't know Kirby? This pink marshmallow like creature has been around for about 20 years! And so because of that, I am going to review Kirby's very first adventure, Kirby's dream land for the original game boy! Does this adventure still hold up like It did back then? Let's find out!
Story-7/10 The main story behind this game is not explained in the game itself, But here It is, Kirby is relaxing one day in his beloved home dream land, But then one day his long time rival king dedede has decided to steal all of the food that remains in the dream land, It is now up to Kirby to save the day!
Gameplay-8/10 Kirby's dream land is a platformer, and a very out of the ordinary one as well, Well that is because the main character himself Kirby has the ability to swallow enemies and copy their abilities! Well in this game he doesn't, But in the next games he will, This was the first in the series, so there is always room for improvement! But anyways, In each level you control Kirby as you adventure through more then 5 big levels, defeating enemies and collecting a bunch of items as well. At the end of each level you must fight a boss, now the bosses in Kirby games are quite challenging and will require alot of skill and strategy to defeat, but in the end they are pretty easy! If you are low on health, then collecting any of the food scattered in each level will replenish half of your life, Once you have now more health points, you lose a life, Lose all of your lives and It is game over, you will have the option to continue automatically, unlike games like sonic the hedgehog where you will have to collect a certain amount of rings in a special stage in order to earn a continue. Besides, 1-ups in the shape of Kirby an be found in all levels, anyways, that is the gameplay.
Graphics-7/10 As depicted on the box of the game, Kirby is rather white then pink in the later titles, Heck the original game boy itself Is black white itself, But anyways, the graphics in this game are really good for an original game boy game, all levels you will be exploring in the game are happy, bright, and so Kirby-like! As for the actual character sprites, they are really good as well! Kirby looks Ok, His enemies look Ok, King dedede looks ok, and so on! I know that the original game boy wasn't the most powerful system, It was still pretty awesome!
Sound-7/10 One thing that the Kirby games have been known for ever since day one, The soundtrack, all Kirby songs sound very bright, happy, cheerful, and always seem to fit the mood of each respective level! As for the sound effects, they are pretty good as well, You have Kirby's famous mouth open sound, you have his float sound effects, you have the sounds that his powers make, and so on. Never once has the music in Kirby games ever annoyed me!
Addictiveness-7/10 Kirby games always and I saw ALWAYS have that certain charm that will make you want to come back to them alot, And this is one of many, I remember always playing the game whenever I had to, and when I did, I just felt so much better then usual!
Depth-7/10 The game is pretty short itself, But It does have some stuff to come back to! The game itself is about 7 levels long, so it will probably take you 1-2 hours to beat the whole game. The other Kirby games have stuff like minigames, treasures, etc. But this was the first game, so there was room for improvement!
Difficulty-5/10 One of the game's low points, the difficulty level, As much as I was praising the game, The game is just somewhat too easy! I remembered dashing through the whole game with about 20 lives left, never having any problems at all! But at least the sequels are much more through in the difficulty curves.
Overall-9.2/10 This game is a must buy for Game boy owners! Nuff said, the game is so good that Kirby has been around for about 20 years! Let's just hope this guy the best in the future!
