Eating healthy is one of the main concerns today. But most people can't afford to eat healthy with the prices being skyrocketed and the economy being where it is today for jobs and low incomes .
I myself am going threw this problem at hand.

How does one go about eating healthy if they can't afford it?

Are any one of you going threw this same problem?

If so.. How are you dealing with it?

if you have any tips please.. Do share
Or if neither please leave a comment on what you think or would advise one to do in this situation,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I can afford healthy foods as it's pretty cheap in here. (I'm not from states) The problem is finding the healthy food vendors in the urban cities. Veggies sold here in the city aren't that fresh and tasty anymore compared from the veggies in the provinces.

Yeah I've noticed myself that veggies have gone out pretty poorly . Nothings as fresh as it use to be here either. I myself am in Canada and the potatoes here seem to be rotten a lot. But I'm speaking about meats as well . Like chicken and pork products. But yes as for veggies they are cheap but them being "not as fresh" anymore they don't last long in the fridge so they have to be used up quick.

P.S I checked out your song/vid. There. Well put together and if you made that song Well done

LOL no I can't. My friend can though, since she gets food stamp. Maybe if we had a local farmer's market here, eating healthy would be a lot cheaper. Sadly, we don't at the moment. We have a commercial one though, which cost like $60 per person for entrance fee only. It's usually more towards the tourists here though. Also, fresh food spoils pretty fast, which is probably one of the reasons it's so expensive maybe.

You make a valid point there. That and most veggies are transported from other cities/country's . I remember when everything was a reasonable price and everyone could afford to eat healthy . AH. The good old days.

I have enough money to go out to the Amish and get some fruit, their strawberries are really good. So I do have enough money to purchase fresh fruits and healthy stuff.

KickinBack : Eating healthy really isn't that expensive when you compare. The problem is EATING out. People make the common comparison/mistake of the following:

"Hey McDonalds sells a burger for 99c but their salad costs 8 bucks, whats the deal??" Or something similar.

Thing is normally if you go to a fast food joint you spend somewhere between 7-10$ in most metro areas in the US.

Now look at it this way. If I go to the grocery store and purchase a nice NY strip steak and some veggies or a potato for a side I've spent less than 10$ and I've gotten food that is not only more tasty, it's also better for you.

The key is learning to cook and not depending on eating out or eating fast food every night.

Me personally? I've eaten at a "fast food" place once this entire year. ONCE.

Look at it this way, it's better to spend a few extra cents purchasing fresh food than it would be to spend the THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS on doctors/hospitals later down the road because you weren't taking care of yourself.

No I understand that you might not be talking about this fast food problem per se, but it's a common misconception spreading around the US. In Canada, I'm not as familiar with the problems. Me personally? I live in the Chicago area and I can easily find Farmers markets to shop at during the summer season. In the winter I have to adjust.

Also, I grow many of my own veggies and Herbs. That is another good suggestion. Even if you are limited for space you can create a vertical garden.

Jordanv78 : Thanks for the input and you also make a very valid point. "fast foods" are what people are most quick to jump too cause they've had a long day and just want something fast to eat, so I agree on that.

I can afford to eat healthy. My family is always trying to save money and they are doing really good at that so far. I have noticed the problem of many people not being able to eat healthy a lot in the past couple years.

Yeah, we really can't afford it. We are basically living off of food stamps. Also:

Jordanv78 : We hardly ever have fast food, because it is about as expensive as buying the healthy food. But, think about it like this: A decent size bag of salad costs around 4 or 5 dollars, and they typically weigh a little less than a pound. However, you could get 10 pounds of potatoes for the same price. Potatoes are not healthy. Not in large amounts. They are only starch, so the only thing they are good for is carbohydrates, much like corn. For people who genuinely cannot afford to eat healthy, they cannot afford eating out either. Not to mention, what you said about the eating out thing. You could buy a healthy dinner like that for about seven to ten dollars. That's about 50 dollars a week. You could actually buy a few burgers from mcdonalds for only 3 dollars, which unless my math is wrong, that's less than seven dollars. It's when people want to buy the fancier fast foods that it actually gets expensive.

On a side note, the only healthy thing we can really afford here is spinach. Fortunately, that's like super health food. It's seriously only 5 dollars for a pound of spinach here. I like to snack on it when we have it, it's a lot more filling than a lot of other food.

epicpokenerd! : First off here's a few things. Although I understand that Potatoes are cheaper than greens, they are not all bad for you they can be fine in moderation. It's all about how you prepare them..but generally if you cook at home it's a lot cheaper than eating out or eating fast food. The key is to shop smart and learn how to cook something that's not processed/in a box.

Also, in the US a bag of salad is like 3-4$ but the problem is that you shouldn't be purchasing processed foods in the first place. Of course a bag of processed and clipped iceberg lettuce is going to be more expensive than if you just bought a head of lettuce. People spend the extra 3$ on the "convenience" of not having to clean it because they are generally lazy or don't feel like they have the 3 mins it takes to actually prepare it. The processed food industry has led people to believe that they don't have the time to do these things themselves.

A head of lettuce costs like 1$ as well as do most greens that you can buy at the store. The problem nowadays is that people don't want to be bothered to cook unless it can be done in 15 mins or can be cooked in the microwave.

It can be VERY cheap to eat healthy you just have to take the initiative to do so.

No, no I can't. All the cheep vegetables are mostly the genetically modified ones, and the side effects of those are worse...I know there's bags of lettuce and salad for pretty cheep. But my parents never buy them. So I just don't eat much.

In my case, I try to eat as healthy as possible, everything that I eat is most of the time done/cooked at home and if I'm going to be out I always try to bring some food made at home to avoid eating fast food or spend a lot of money trying to eat healthy in a restaurant.

It's easy to eat healthy, you just need to learn to cook/prepare your food yourself and at the same time you save a lot of money avoiding eating at restaurants.

if you want to control your food here are the steps

1. starve yourself for as long as you can ( this is bad it make fat cell but trust me only 1 day well not really the whole day just skip 1 meal )
2. you will feel like your hungry but you'll fill up fast  because your stomach actually squeeze tight so you'll get full faster then your previous meal.
3. portion control eat with a small plate most people continue eating because there just food on there plate
4. eat spicy food helps you consume more water
5. steam veggies especially broccoli

health food is affordable for everyone but most people prefer fast super cheap lol

Thankfully where I live healthy foods are affordable, mainly because we have year-round produce markets and co-ops. Thankfully a lot of it is local. Finding cheap basic ingredients like rice, beans, dried fruit, frozen vegetables, nuts/seeds and grains is easy almost anywhere. My province has the lowest rate of obesity in the country. I think part of it is due to all the health food fanatics... It's a west coast thing

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
