Overall- 8
I got it this time by adding up all the rest of the scores and dividing them by 6. This is a really good game, and possibly one of my favorites for the Nintendo 64.
Graphics- 7
Since the Nintendo 64 was released in North America on September 29, 1996, you can't expect the graphics to be all that great. Back then, they were probably pretty amazing. But now, with the Xbox 360 (soon to be One) and Play Station 3 (soon to be 4), the graphics are next to nothing.
Sound- 9
Could easily be a 10 if it didn't glitch on and off, and that's exactly why it's a 9. Some of the other games I can't even hear sound, or it glitches way worse than this. The music is good, especially for an older game like this one. The voices like Mario's and Pikachu's are good (ex: when you pick a character or attack with one).
Addictiveness- 8
The first time I played this game, I didn't know what I was doing, having no prior knowledge with Super Smash Bros., and I made it to the Magic Hand guy using only one continue. (I had set my lives to only 3) Sadly, I was interrupted and had to leave the house, so I didn't get to play for long. Every time after, I just do team battles, and play for at least half an hour at a time. Anyone who has not played this game already should try it out. Next thing they know they'll be playing for hours!
Story- 9
Since this is the first Super Smash Bros. game, the story is original. A child has a bunch of dolls in his or her room that come to life and fight in arenas. Now where do the arenas come from though? Since the Nintendo characters who are always so friendly start to fight, who knows what will happen. If you run out of lives, you fall back on the dresser.
Depth- 8
This game has different modes, story mode, battle mode, and multiplayer mode. There are in total 12 playable characters, 4 of which must be unlocked. The default characters are Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox and Pikachu. The four unlockable characters are Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff. So those are all the characters, right? Wrong. There are some players in the game that can only be controlled by the computer. These characters are the other colored Yoshis, Giant Donkey Kong, who is a character you team up against in single player/story mode, the Fighting Polygon Team, which are modeled off of playable characters in the game, and are in 2 stages, Race to the Finish and a battle against them in single player mode. Another character you cannot play as is Metal Mario, a metal version of Mario which you battle against. And last but not least, Master Hand, who is the Super Smash Bros. boss.
Difficulty- 7
Some of the stages and battles are hard, I know. But if either you have a lot of experience with the game or put yourself at a safe enough amount of lives to where you won't have to use a continue, the game should be a breeze. I am alright at this game, as it is sort of easy to pick up on, but it's difficult at the beginning.
Tips:
If you want to unlock new characters fast, put yourself at 5 lives. Every other character has one life, except for the teams (Yoshi team, Fighting Polygon team and Kirby team) who have one life a piece.
To unlock Luigi, finish the target test with all 8 default characters and beat him when challenged.
To unlock Jigglypuff, finish one player mode on any difficulty with any amount of lives and any character without using a continue and beat him when challenged.
To unlock Ness, finish one player mode on normal with 3 lives without using a continue, and beat him when challenged.
To unlock Captain Falcon, finish one player mode in 20 minutes and beat him when challenged.
To unlock the Mushroom Kingdom map, clear one player mode with all 8 default characters on any difficulty with any amount of lives without using a continue. Overall- 8
