The first music that I listened to was Italian, but after a couple of years, I found the Beatles' 1 Anthology which got me started listening to rock. That was about 4.5 years ago. About 1 year ago was when I went through a change that would hurt me for the next year which only stopped hurting recently. By then I switched over. Now I would choose rap. Rap is different though. When you really boil it down, music is white and black (for this country anyway, USA). White music is really just Western / Country, the rest was black. Jazz, blues (country equivalent), r&b, and rap which some argue is merely an extension of funk, a style of r&b, was all made by black musicians. Real music fans listen to not just a few styles but listen to the whole race, which takes a couple genres to hear the full picture. That is not to say that I don't love rock, I do. Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, etc. are some of my favorite artists. What I am saying is that black musicians and music have contributed more and made a tad bit better music than their white counterparts and followers. Without black music, rock music would not have existed anyway so in a sense we all love black music. When you trace everyone's bloodlines back, we are all black. I digress. Just state your favorite of the two genres with a little explanation. Thank you.

No offense, but from that post I'd say you're very racially biased against white people. The thread title makes it seem like it's which type of music is better, then you go and mention how all of these different genres of music are of black origin and how black music is better. You even credit black people for rock. Then you bring up how everyone was originally black.

You separate white and black music, as if all white people can listen to is country and only country (no mention of rock being of white origin, by the way) and black people only listen to rap, jazz and r&b. FYI, I play jazz music, a lot. I listen to jazz and I also listen to rap and funk. I also like rock. However, LIKE MOST WHITE PEOPLE, I hate country. And the rock musicians you named don't represent most of rock's styles. Racism doesn't have to be white on black you know, it can be black on white. On second thought, it goes beyond that. You think that black people are better than everyone else and use flawed logic to try and prove it.

But to respond to the supposed thread topic, I think rock is better as a whole. I know there's still a lot of good rap being made these days, but there's just too much more bad rap. Sure, people have lousy taste in music and don't pay enough attention to lyrics, but the music is still being made. I just think that in rap, there's too much bad and it almost outweighs the good and the great. In rock, the scenario just isn't as bad

I apologize for possibly coming off a bit biased.

I am not racially biased against white people, many of my friends are white as well as many of my musicians. All that I was saying was that a lot of the early innovators of music such as rock were black. It's not biased or racist, it's just fact. If you think that people like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. were the first rock bands then I feel sorry for you being so uninformed. But I respect your choice of rock because there's no wrong answer. But I'm afraid "that rock being of white origin" is completely untrue. The sound is heavily influenced by the blues sound, the soloing is from jazz, etc. Those are black genres of music. You should know that being a jazz listener.

+ I guarantee that if you look up the history of rock 'n' roll anywhere, it will start off very different than you may think.

What's wrong with talking? It gets a lot done. Sometimes talking can be very beautiful. You ever heard of Isaac Hayes (Chef from South Park) or Barry White? They didn't need to sing. They could just casually talk and it would sound amazing.

Ok, if you didn't mean for it to come off that way, then apology accepted.

Anyway, the man who in my opinion is the best guitarist of all time, Randy Rhoads, was heavily influenced by classical music. Though some of rock was influenced by jazz, classical has a heavier influence from what I've noticed. Also, I looked up rock's origins: I found roots in folk, jazz, country and classical music. 3 of those would be considered white.

And what IS wrong with talking? Why do lyrics need to be sung? Personally, I hate that people think that songs need to have singing or they aren't music. That's musically ignorant and would only come from someone with little musical knowledge. Also, I've never heard a rap song that doesn't have background music

I'm sorry to keep disagreeing with you Ziggy but jazz is not all that white. Armstrong, Davis, Coltrane, Monk, Ellington, Parker were all black. I could understand the confusion, however, because the first recorded jazz band were all white. But that was many years after its inception. Black musicians were playing it years before this would happen.

You have a pretty heated up topic in here...

I agree with you, ziggy. What you said applies to classical musics too . I love classicals(Salut d' Amour, Canon, Moonlight Sonata, etc) . I like the fact that composers of classical musics can show what they want to express, even without lyrics, they can do it by just composing melodies. And classicals always make me smile.

Back to the topic. I like both rap and rock because they have their own good and bad points.

I'm closing this before the flaming match gets out of hand.
Plus, either make a thread or a poll, not make a thread then if its popular make a poll afterwards.
