Graphics 10/10

Considering this is a newer version of the original Pokemon game 'Pokemon Red' for the gameboy color I will have to comment on that game also and I will compare and contrast both games too.

The graphics within this game are really spectacular, I can clearly see the creators of this game really put in a great amount of time and effort into making this game's graphics superb, they obviously took a look back at the previous version of this game, the original Pokemon Red which was specifically made for the Gameboy Color. The creators enhanced the colouring, the sprites, the scenery and the overall presentation of the game greatly which deserves a huge amount credit, that they do deserve. I thought the creators did excellent job in making the graphics of this game amazing.

Lets start with the character sprites. I fell in love with the character sprites immediately, it was almost instantaneous as I could see great improvements made in the use of colouring in this version than to the previous Pokemon Red. The characters are extremely attractive in the sense that they particularly relate to the Pokemon anime series. The hat/cap that the main character (you) is attired with in the game is really awesome, it is the original hat/cap that Ash Ketchum (the main character in the anime series) wears which I really like. The great use of fiery & ruby reds used on the hat/cap were extremely vivid and precise, the vivid reds of the hat/cap obviously tying in with the title of the game Pokemon 'Fire Red'  which is extremely effective and relates to the game perfectly. The colour used in the particular clothing that 'Ash' is acquired with is also very eye-pleasing, there was also a great use of vivid reds and dazzling whites used in the making of these clothes, although not much detail was put into clothing of this character it was still particularly brilliant because as I said before, it ties in with the anime series which is ever so effective.

Now for the rival character introduced in the game (Gary), this character'a visual appearance in the game isn't as pleasing as Ash's. The shading of the colour black wasn't used effectively on Gary's torso, when I say torso I refer to his upper clothing. In the anime series Gary's top/t-shirt is very attractive in that there is a great use of blacks and grays, we didn't get that with the game. The blacks used on Gary's torso were faded and very dim and discoloured which didn't attract me to the game at all, a little bit more effort into Gary's clothing would have made a great impact on my thoughts and opinions of the graphics used on this character's clothing. However, having said that, there was tremendous efforts used in the characters facial expression and hair, there was great uses of browns and whites. The brown colouring for his hair were fantastic, there were good visual aids used in this particular area of the characters sprite, even on his face too, the pale-ish white colours were used effectively and they didn't go too heavily on the shading also which is very good and great to see.
All in all, the character sprites in this game were generally impressive and should be given credit.

The Scenery - Oh my word, the scenery in this game is extremely, extravagantly epic in my opinion.
Lets start with the trees, caves, routes, pathways, all of the natural substances in the game. The trees and grass in this game were utterly amazing and that's an understatement. There were many shadings of green used in this particular aspect of the game, there were light, faded greens which may have signified the light shining upon them which is extremely effective as it relates to everyday life, plants do react to sunlight in that way. As we began to look at the outer parts of the trees the colours got darker and darker as they sprung out from the core of the tree, not forgetting that the trees are tightly spaced together, this ties in with the darker colours that were used in the making of the trees as we all know as trees get closer parts of it shuffle behind another tree, this prevents light reaching that part of the tree and thus the greens get darker. Very powerful and we can relate to this, this is what I want to see in a game's graphics - attention to detail. This also applies to the grass.

The colours of brown used in the making of the outer parts of the caves were also very precise and clear as there were many different shadings used. There were also cracks in the caves which obviously shows the creators really went all out and there was evidence that attention to detail was key here and they pulled it off fantastically. The interiors of the caves were also amazing, the lighting was reduced and it really made me feel as if I was in a cave myself, this is very effective and again ties in with real life. The flooring of the interiors of the caves were also worked on very well, there were great shadings of browns/oranges/greys and blacks, as you can see many colours were introduced and were all mixed sparingly, meaning it wasn't patchy or uneven.

The towns - the towns in this game were specifically tremendous, there was so much attention to detail. I thought 90% of the towns in the game were extremely well built and structured however, I didn't particularly like Pallet Town, the first ever town you visit as it's Ash's hometown of course. The colouring used in the house and scenery of this town were really inadequate, all features of the town appeared to be really faded and I refer to the colours when I say that. They made me feel like I was in the 19th century, and that's not where a gamer wants to be. And, for the sheer size of the town, it's very small therefore time could have been spent on improving the visuality of the town, the appearance. As I said before, this is the first town a player of this game will see therefore it must be very pleasing and attractive as it will appeal to the player and make them want to see more of the amazing graphics in store for them in the game. Having said that, many towns were extremely detailed and a lot of effort went into them, especially Saffron City, The use of gold in this town was very attractive.  The town was itself was spectacular, the cobbled paths were really attractive, great use of grays/whites and blacks were used. The buildings locations in the town weren't too great in my opinion, some necessary buildings were hard to locate at times. But seriously,  this was one of the best towns in the game.

Sounds 10/10

In my precious review of the game Pokemon Shiny Gold I referred to this game many times about the sound, so this will very similar to that particular section of that review.

The sounds in this game were very similar to that of the  sounds in Pokemon Red. I'm very pleased with that actually because the sounds in that game were amazing, it brought back special memories. The classic sound that plays when you catch your first Pokemon, even though it plays every time you catch a Pokemon it's still pretty awesome and really nice to listen to. It makes you feel that you completed a goal and to be proud of yourself. I also really enjoyed the creepy tunes of the basements in the game it makes you feel that your on a mission and you can't be seen. It really pulls on your senses, you're always alert and ready for battle in the basements because of the music.

The Pokemon battle music is also very awesome to listen to, it's a really fast tune that gets your blood pumping and makes you really competitive and therefore you really want to win, and probably will do so. The music also has great vibes to it. I really enjoyed listening to music in Saffron City, the music in that city is very calm and relaxing it really  soothes you after all the battles in the routes before that town. The music in Celadon's Game Corner is specifically amazing too, it is a very happy and playful tune and was a perfect choice for that particular venue. Also, the Pokemon league music was extremely fierce! The tunes were very fast and upbeat and filled you with determination and at times ruthlessness, it also made you believe that you could conquer the league and that's all I needed to succeed.

Addictiveness 9/10

This game is very, very addictive, oh my word is it addictive. When I was a kid I would play this game until the cows came home and I still do play it all the time, it's an amazing game and it really created my childhood! The more I played this game the more I fell in complete love with it. There were so many different things you could do, there were no end to the possibilities! The KANTO region is by far the best region is whole world of Pokémon, the Pokemon within this particular region are incredible! In this game you have the three starters you could ever ask for in Pokémon, in my opinion - Charmander the fiery devil, Squirtle the blue beast, and Bulbasaur the lazy lump! These Pokémon made me an addict to the game, they are so awesome and dominant. Also, the legendary Pokémon were extremely extravagant, in my opinion the best legendary Pokémon in the history of Pokémon! You have Lugia, HO-OH, Entei/Raikou/Suicine, Mew Two, Deoxys and many more, that is what drew me into the game and made me want to play it even more, the variety of legendaries available.

There was no end to the Pokémon battles, every corner you turned there was a trainer that you had to conquer and defeat, this made the game extremely addictive and made it that there was always something to do even if it was just battling! As you may have noticed from previous reviews, I love battling, because it provides me with excitement and adrenalin, and of course thrill which I really love in a game. The Pokemon battles in this game were actually very challenging and sometimes it was nearly impossible to beat the rival trainer, but this is a good thing because the more challenging a game is, the more fun you get out of it, and I also love difficult battles too! There was also a Pokémon Trainer Tower which was utterly fantastic! This meant that the battles were always flowing and you could level your Pokémon pretty easily therefore you could conquer the league without any difficulty or pressure. I really love leveling Pokémon so this drew me into the game also. The league in this game were surprisingly hard at times, the elite four were very forceful and dominant so it took a little elbow grease to beat them. But, this meant that there was great satisfaction after succeeding and I felt very proud of myself, and it's that feeling that inspires you to play the game.

To sum that up, this game is extremely addictive, once you start playing this game you will immediately get sucked into it because it's absolutely brilliant and addictive. as I say.

Story 7/10

This game is very similar to the Pokémon games before this (Red, Blue, Green). The story is exactly the same, you are welcomed to Pokémon world by the region Professor (Elm, Oak etc.), you choose the name of your character, you then choose the name of your rival which in this case is Gary. After all that you are advised to visit Oak, the professor. However, in this game he isn't there which makes you think and wonder where he is or what trouble he may be into - creating an atmosphere which is very effective.  You then are given the choice of one out of three possible Pokemon, Charmander, Bulbasaur or Squirtle. You collect GYM badges throughout the region and beat the region's Pokémon league, all very straight forward.

However, your rival in this game is Gary, and if you've played this game you'll know he's one tough old bird. Gary is extremely brilliant at battling, if you watch the anime series' you will completely understand what I mean when I say that. He chooses a Pokémon after you choose one, and you can guess what he chooses, he chooses the Pokémon that is more effective against your Pokémon, so he may have a great advantage over you when it comes to battling him later on in the game. You encounter Gary throughout the game in fact, he's usually outside every GYM you defeat or are about to defeat. He'll challenge you then and you best be ready because he's very difficult in my opinion especially because he chose Squirtle (when I was playing) which is a water-type and is obviously more dominant over a fire-type.

There's no real help in this game which is terrible because friends and help is really what you need in a Pokémon game to succeed, they motivate you so it was a disappointment as Pokémon Gold provided the assistance of Lance and he really helped you conquer the game.

This game's story is really based on Ash's story in the anime series, he is always encountered by Gary throughout his adventures into the world of Pokémon. Overall, the story in this game isn't very detailed and could have been made a lot longer in my opinion.

Depth 8/10

This game is really detailed in a sense too, but not as detailed as other Pokémon games such as Pokémon Saphire and Emerald. However, there is a lot of depth to it as well as your straight forward choosing your Pokemon, beating the gyms, defeating team rocket and becoming pokemon champion, there's more than just that in this game which is really nice to see. Not only do you beat the league but you can beat the Pokémon Trainer Tower which I may have mentioned earlier in this review, after conquering the substantially hard tower you get really neat rewards which can greatly benefit you in the game especially around the GYM's and the Elite.

The whole Team Rocket scandal in this game takes forever to resolve, there's so many tasks and challenges to overcome before actually finding the leader of the them all, Giovanni. You encounter hundreds of Team Rocket grunts before even having a glimpse at this man. There are so many basements (Celadon City) and layers that you must conquer before encountering Giovanni, this adds great depth to the game and allows you to have more game play which all gamers love! I really love hard and enduring challenges because they require a great deal of thought and attitude, which is brilliant for me because I love keeping my brain active. This reminds me of the puzzles in the game. It's really confusing as there's so much tele-porting involved, from room to room and then back to the start, you will need a great deal of perseverance and stamina to complete these puzzles and finally taking on Giovanni. After that, you can defeat the league which takes a long time considering their Pokémon are absolute beasts.

Not only is there many towns but there are many islands too! After defeating the league, you can access the Sevii Islands and other islands of that matter! You can encounter many rare Pokémon in them islands including Lugia and Ho-oH. There are also a lot of puzzles in these islands and within the puzzles there are many, many long and enduring battles. All of this adding to the depth of the game.

Overall this game is very long and there is a lot of game play in store for you!

Difficulty 10/10

In my opinion, this game is really difficult and I have to be fully honest in saying that. I found the GYM's really tough to beat, especially the last two or three, their Pokémon were really advanced and a lot stronger than mine, but I finally succeeded after about twenty tries. The league was also very difficult, It took me at least thirteen tries before I conquered them, I always fell at the last hurdle. The elite were too tough for me, I had to go back and re-train my Pokémon before trying them for the final time. I especially hated the ghost Pokémon in the league because all my Pokémon knew were Normal-Type moves and they're completely ineffective toward ghost-type Pokémon. I really recommend that you train up your Pokémon before even attempting the league!

Catching the legendary Pokémon in the game was fairly easy in my opinion because they didn't really have any strong moves, but they did have annoying moves (recover) which really got on my nerves, I would take away almost every Health Point they had but they would just use recover and it regained them their health back. I only found one Pokémon hard to capture, that Pokémon was Suicine. Suicine isn't in a fixed position so it's extremely difficult to even encounter him, he was also too hard to capture in balls, it also fled a few times on me which wasn't too nice! But, I learned a Pokémon Mean Look and there was no way it was leaving anymore.

Overall 9.2/10

Overall I think this game is the best Pokémon game I've ever played. The graphics are extremely precise and clear, I loved them so much, there was so much attention to detail, great use of colour and shadings. The graphics were amazing! If it's graphics you look for in a game, then this game is the game for you. The sounds in the game were tremendous and soothing, they really made me feel good while playing the game and really helped me focus. The game was extremely difficult for me, so if you love hard games give this game a try! The story lineis basic and simplistic but it's long, and there's great depth involved.

I will conclude my saying please try this game because it's the most amazing game you'll ever play, guaranteed!

This review has a lot of words, and you seem to flaunt that. But having a lot of words doesn't mean its good. Its a fine review but quite a bit of it is just fluff. Do we really need to know how the grass looks? Do we need to know how effective black was used on a fraction of a character that appears for much less than the majority of the game? I like how you commented on the attention to detail, but you don't have to give us so many examples.  And there are also some parts that were just personal stories, its okay to put it in there, but in the case of this review when you take that out of the category, what's left is lacking

Dean2k13 : You don't fail to impress. The only thing I would change about the review, is the beginning. Instead of introducing yourself each time, you would hold more attention if you just jumped right into the review. Also, I don't think you should be so quick to tell people not to even bother giving a critique if they don't read the entire review, because younger users may not have such a wide attention-span. You also were a bit harsh by saying that other users would be 'lying' if they gave you criticism without reading your entire review. You are very good at what you do, but you don't want to get ahead of yourself.

My other suggestion would still be to pay closer attention to grammar and punctuation. I still saw a few areas that weren't as clearly expressed as they could have been, but nothing major that wouldn't be expected from a review of this length. You may want to try an online spelling and grammar checker of some sort; I'm sure there are plenty out there for free if you search for them.

Anyway, I think you do an outstanding job overall. You have my respect as a fellow writer- the more you write, the better you will become. Keep at it.

Nice job dude, this is like a pokemon biography or field guide/walkthrough of the game rather than a review. It is extremely long and I didn't read all of it because I am making this post from my 3ds and it was lagging, so I read part of it and got to the reply. This is a very detailed review, but some stuff could be changed and start with the actual review over a personal introduction. You are very descriptive and make your reviews interesting and other than a few grammatical errors which can always be fixed, a job well done. You have inspired me to put my reviews to the 2000 word range, so overall, excellent work and keep it up, keep making great reviews!

This is a nice detailed review and you've done some impressive work here. From reading your review, I can tell that you understand what it means to persuade other people in wanting to play this game using evidence that you found in the game. Some people still don't understand that concept and you are doing it well. I may not agree with your ratings, but it is your own opinion about it.

I do want to point out that you want to be very careful in not giving too much irrelevant detail to your review. Having detail is important in proving your point about the game, but sometimes having too much detail would lose the readers interest and sometimes you can't blame them for having a shorter attention span than what the article expects the reader to have. I liked what you did with graphics when you divide the critique between character, sprites, scenery, and town, because all are different aspects of graphics that should be considered. However, you might have gone a little too far when you start to microscopically break down the graphics to the nearest pixel. Talking about the black shading on Gary's torso or explaining how the tightness of the trees prevent light from coming through might be a little excessive. Give details that are necessary. Remember the motivation of writing a review is to critique it wholesomely and reasonably, but the motivation is not about word count or see if you can write the most detail from the game.

Finally, just for clarification, you got the video game and the anime backwards when you are talking about the story of the game. The anime is actually based on the pokemon games, not the other way around.

Dean2k13 : Simply amazing...no excellent...no phenomenal...no....well words can not describe how extraordinary this review is Dean . The compare and contrast writing style comparing the old from the new was a work of true brilliance and you pulled it off in excellent extensive detail. You broke down the categories flawlessly and gave really strong valid and above from what was expected reasoning behind your reason for rating each category what you rated it. I enjoyed this read like I do any other of your reads!

For an old second review, I'd say its impressive. Shows why you have the white banner for a while. Pokemon Fire Red was a great remake of the Red franchise, and the improvement is pretty great. Well done.

It looks like another good review made by a guy who knows Video games. What shocked me was that the difficulty was at 10, Honestly thought the game was as easy as pie,yet the best review I've seen of Pokémon fire red and keep at it with the reviews.
