mrfe: Well, teacher appreciation week was actually last week for us..... or at least, that's when our school celebrated it. I didn't really get anything from my students this year, which is kind of typical. I'm actually very surprised when any kid knows the week rolls around. However, the SGA did prepare a lunch on Wednesday and a breakfast on Friday, sot hat was pretty nice. Also the FTA (Future Teachers of America) served us a bowl of ice cream after school today. thing1: responded in kind to both threads. TheFadedWarrior : Thanks for fixing those for me. ^.^ ooooh, lots of questions! Yay! And good ones, too! I assume they are for me too, since you summoned play4fun to tell him the questions were for him 'too'. 1. What do you mean about my opinion of them? They're human beings just like everyone else, and I wouldn't treat them with any prejudice. Clearly, I think their ideas on religion are incorrect, but I think that many things which people think are incorrect. For example, I think people who don't recognize math as being a superior subject... are just wrong. I kid! But in all seriousness, I don't see a reason to discriminate against people for their beliefs. 2. Ahhhhh, been a long time since someone asked me this! My dream car: A Ford F150, fleet side, at least a 4" lift kit, extended cab and preferably an older model. However, I'd more than gladly take a 2013. I don't think any other vehicle will be more fit for me. Every time I see one on the road, I lose my dignity a little. If I could have a 'crush' on a car, I'd certainly have one on the Ford F150. 3. I currently have one cat named Dorito. I believe he's just a mutt, but he's probably the fourth love in my life (after God/ Jesus, my husband, and my family). He's completely black, terribly sweet, and almost 8 years old now. I've had him ever since he was a kitten too small for his collar. 4. Well, I desire very, very strongly to have children some day, so D would be out no matter what the benefit to myself might be. The doctors tell me that my disorder will most likely keep me from ever having children, but I still pray daily that God will bless me some day. I don't know what wingsuit jumping is, though I'm certain the name is self-explanatory. Sounds a bit TOO crazy. Besides, skydiving is on my list of things to do before I die. So definitely, definitely A. My husband will probably never let it happen, but I can dream! ^.^ ooooh, lots of questions! Yay! And good ones, too! Singelli : Wingsuit jumping is pretty crazy. I think it's currently only in China, but it still sounds pretty awesome (and terrifying). Basically, you put on a very aerodynamic suit with your arms attached to your torso (wings), then go in a half-hour-long ride in a cable car up to the top of a mountain. After that, you jump off of the mountain and sail through the trees and valleys for at least a whole mile until you get back to the starting point of the cable cars... Yeah, it's pretty scary. http://www.wimp.com/extremeflying/ http://www.wimp.com/extremeflying/ |

mrfe : Yes, but I'm also hoping to get into the field of Physics Education Research.
TheFadedWarrior : My opinion about Atheist and Agnostics is that we are all Atheist and Agnostics from the beginning. There are some who really don't understand the truths about God which leads to their unbelief, others know in their hearts that it is true, but they suppress the truth, refusing to believe, and then there are just too stubborn to believe, wanting to know everythign before trusting in God, when humans can't know everything and while God provides strong support in nature and in His Word of His existence and His expectation and relation to us. As for being prejudice towards them, no. I would not be prejudice against nonbelievers. There are certain things that are limited to believers just because it is specifically for them (like Comm I actually don't have a "favorite" car model. My brother would have a better opinion on that. I don't really know much about car models or care much about it. Currently we don't have any pets. We used have (in different times) a canary, a turtle, and a bunch of fishes. Sigh, you gave me some tough choices here...I would definitely want to say none of the above. I'm probably not as daring as Singelli. If I HAVE to choose...it would be base jumping. Less of a height. Singelli, do you have a favorite topic in math?
play4fun : Do you have a favorite topic in physics? I'm currently going for a degree in both, so I'm curious about what kind of material you two like to study. I'd love to hear the details if either of you want to go into them. play4fun : Do you have a favorite topic in physics? Q : Oh wow... you're majoring in both? That's absolutely awesome! I hear that a lot of engineering students do that just because the courses are so similar, so I guess that would only make sense with math. I personally loved physics just because of how applicable and mathematical it was. As for my favorite math, I DO have one! How nerdy does that make me? XD I really, REALLY enjoy calculus. Like physics, it's so very applicable. If a student asks "But why do I need this?" an answer can pop to my head immediately. Nearly everything we do or use involves rates of some kind... something either changing or not changing. Since calculus basically measures change, and life is full of change, our lives are quite literally full of calculus! I think another thing that draws me to calculus is the fascination I find in its totality. What I mean by that is this: As a math student, one of the first things you learn about is the rate of change (slope). You spend years studying it from a very simple level... the idea that one thing can affect another. In calculus, you are studying the SAME thing! I wish more calculus students understood this... and understood the fact that we can isolate any one data point and get so much from it. I'm not sure how 'in-depth- you want me to go, but I can easily go more in depth if you want me to. ^.^ As for my favorite math, I DO have one! How nerdy does that make me? Q: First of, can I just apologize for the many times I accidentally summoned you to the forum because of me operating a Bible Trivia Competition and I keep making the mistake of typing Q: in front of the question? I feel like I keep doing that and I can understand how annoying it can be to you. You might hear other people say that there is a sort of trinity in Physics: Mechanics, Quantum, and Electromagnetism. Within these you get smaller groups like Thermo, analog and digital circuitry, fluids, solid state, relativity, etc, etc. There are just so many topics since physics is the study of how the world works. To me, Quantum Mechanics is such an interesting field to learn about. It is basically the dominating backbone behind most modern physic today. It changes our understanding of how the world works compared to how we originally thought through classical mechanics, and yet it still harmonizes with how mechanics describes the macro world. Some of the stuff that is discovered in QM can seem quite paradoxical and some can sound like science fiction, like the discussion of light and its properties of particle and wave, and then the implications of matter being particle and wave, or how experiments in the quantum level and understanding is indeterministic and the result is determined by the observer, which is so bizarre for what we understand in everyday experiences. Sounds so bizarre that many people in the early stages of QM, including Einstein, are not a fan of it. And yet, we use that understanding for technology and future developments, because the math works and, impressively, it works. Sure, the big topic that a lot of people and media are discussing today are mostly elementary particle physics, like the Higgs Boson discovery, the changes in the Standard Model, String Theory or M theory, or the one unified theory that unifies all forces in our universe into possibly one equation. Sure those are fascinating too, but we must not forget about the "how does this work" questions that are apparent everywhere we go. Did I do well in that class? Not really , only because it was just so new and uneasy to me, but it was still an interesting topic to study. Of course, physics is waayyyy better than math (nudging at Singelli) since physics is basically applied math and would be more useful than just math. MegaRevolution1 : I searched through a Bible search just to double check, and no, the Bible does not mention the word "Kangaroo" in it. Singelli : Yeah, that's the practical reason I'm majoring in both. I'm really more of a student of physics, but I do enjoy math (especially at higher levels), and a major in physics here very nearly requires a minor in math in the first place. I had to use those electives for something, so the double major was a natural choice.
Anyway, I've taken two years worth of calculus, so I can certainly relate to your answer. As a student of physics, I appreciate how much easier calculus makes physics calculations, and my knowledge of physics made many concepts in calculus easier to comprehend; it's a pretty nice relationship. I personally prefer more "exotic" fields of math, like number theory and topology, but I'll always have a soft spot for calculus. Regardless, feel free to expand on your answer as much you want to, since this is your thread after all, but I'd be happy to read more. play4fun : No need to apologize. The inevitable hilarity of its circumstances always make up for it, and this proved to be no exception. In other words, I get a kick out of it. :J I'm a big fan of quantum mechanics too, as it turns out. Elementary particle physics is my thing, actually, although I don't care much for string theory or M-theory. I got hooked after studying the Standard Model, but, with that said, I have plenty left to study, both in that area and physics in general, so we'll see if I decide to keep pursuing it for long. I'm not sure I'm willing to say if physics is better than math or vice versa, but I think we call can agree that they're both better than chemistry. :J Anyway, thanks for the answers, you two. Perhaps we could talk about this again some time. (Maybe we should make a thread for this topic.) Anyway, I've taken two years worth of calculus, so I can certainly relate to your answer. Q : I could talk about math and calculus all day long. XD Oh wait, I do on most days. I actually am completely the opposite from you in terms of what draws me to certain mathematical subjects. In fact, my original plans were to get a Ph. D in math, but I quickly changed my mind after getting into the more abstract graduate courses. They made me feel stupid, and I don't think I will ever dislike anything more. In fact, I thought I was going to be forced to take topology, and it was the one class that I knew nothing about, and yet it spread shivers down my spine. I was absolutely terrified of taking that class, and I'm so glad I never had to! LOL Physics was always my favorite science though. Just as you talked about the relationship between physics and calculus, I too loved that characteristic. Better than chemistry?!?! Pfffffffft!!!! Who would argue that?!?! I HATED chemistry. haha! Q : Yeah, it's all very interesting. What I thought was kinda boring was thermodynamics. Not the basic and practical parts, but when we need to go through Gibbs Free Energy or enthalpy and go through a lot of mathematical drills of solving these quantities. It can get very theoretical, and not the interesting or impressive kind. Like I said, I wouldn't call myself the best physics student, but I kinda see myself as "Undergrad Conquered!!!!" when I actually graduated with a Physics Major degree. It does feels like a sense of achievement since it is not an easy major to take. Of course, there is this saying that "Biology is basically chemistry, chemistry is basically physics." So I guess physics is the more foundational science and automatically better! On a different note, I'm assuming you are not 13 then. earthwarrior: I do not plan to willingly close my layout shop. hehe. Sorry to tell ya bud. I enjoy it too much, even though it's been a bit quiet as of late. My last day of school is the 28th, and it can't come fast enough! As far as enjoying the year, the answer to your question would really depend on which aspect of teaching you were referring to. I absolutely adore working with my students, even though they frustrate me beyond belief! I think that throughout the year, they make me want to rip my hair out.... but when I step back and look at the big picture, I can't help but love them all so, so, SO much. It's when the year is over and I can breathe, that I sit back and say "You know, that wasn't so bad. And it was worth it. I love my students!" On the flip side, however? I've never had a supportive administration, and that part of the job is NOT enjoyable no matter HOW I look at it. I've come very close to quitting my job at this particular school twice because of the administration, in fact. I even signed army recruitment papers, and the only reason I'm not in boot camp right now is because the recruiter never did his job and sent in my paperwork. A lot of bad kids? haha.... Sad though it may seem.... the majority of them usually are bad. There are one or two in every class that are good, and that seems to be the rule of thumb. earthwarrior : The pickaxe, if you don't know already, is a diamond pickaxe from the game, Minecraft. I was trying to decide what type of mini pic I want to use for my username, but with the 5 KB limitation and my lack of ability in making a pic or a gif in that size, I decided to find something as simple but standout as possible. That pickaxe was me using paint and Adobe Photoshop Elements to design pixel by pixel and transparent the background. Me feeling really good about how it turned out, I decided to make it my mini pic for my account here on vizzed. (It might change if there is something better that someone else can make for me or that I can somehow do something better.) Me putting it on the side is kinda like a mark or a signature for me, letting people know that I made the thread or that I was around. But who knows? there could be some greater and poetic significance in that pick axe...maybe it defines me as a person, my character, my passions, my desires........? Oh well, if there is such meaning, you may never know......
