I like the idea as long as there is a way to still see closed threads as an option or for staff.

There are always times when a thread gets closed somehow and people want it open again and not being able to see it in the list would make that tough.


I like the idea for sure. It would help drop off the threads that get closed that are up high.

Closed, sticky threads should be an exception though.

My concern at first was that there are closed threads that should help people. For example, there are closed threads about putting disc console games on here, and people need to see those. But on the other hand, given that staff still gets PMs constantly about it and threads asking this question are still get made like every other day, it is obvious they don't even bother looking very hard even when they aren't 'hidden'. So I do like geeo's point about how closed stickied threads should be an exception. Then we can pick the important ones that should be there to help people.

That's a good idea to me because it wouldn't make sense for closed threads to be there if you aren't posting in them.

I do think some people are misunderstanding the proposal because the word "hide" was used.

The real idea here is to change the sort priority. Right now it goes: Sticky, Non-Sticky

And that's about it. The new proposal would be:

Sticky, Non-sticky Open, Non-sticky Closed.

The closed threads would be there and able to be seen... just they would sort behind open threads.

It's not a terrible idea... though ideally your forum activity is such that open threads are always ahead of closed ones anyway since they still receive posts (and if they don't, why are they still open?)

But Vizzed may be a weird situation that requires this sort of management. Who knows? I definitely would prefer it if this wasn't a thing that was needed though.

The solution is to have an option in edit profile or on forum itself for people to select and save their own default browsing method. If we do not add sorting to the forum, then we are not progressing in functionality. It's bad enough there is no search let alone any way to sort and organize the threads.

Open threads first would force mods to actually mod a forum by bumping the open threads back up. Currently, mods can completely ignore open threads that are old and this often results in spam bumps.

Yeah the simplest thing I think has been said several times already... Simple give the non-closed threads higher priority on the list... The closed threads will still be there.. If people wanted to read them.. Plus it would put them together making it obvious to moderators who creates a lot of duplicates.. 

It will also make the forum itself look like it's a lot busier than it is... When you have 15 closed threads on the first page of a forum it doesn't scream active...

Plus it makes it look Prettier 

I love Jigsaw's idea.

I like looking at closed thread almost as much as open ones, but some obviously don't. This would please everyone.

ALSO, some mods may find one way easier for them than the other; giving them the option could make their work a little easier.

I'd only be willing to do this in the near future if it didn't require a lot of work, otherwise if it did require a lot of work, I wont have time to work on it for quite a while since it's not a high priority.

Here's my idea though of how it could not involve a lot of work and still please everyone (and forgive me if this has been suggested already, too busy to read all the replies):

Basically on each page of each forum, it'd show the stickied threads at the top, opened threads in the middle, and closed threads at the bottom. It would be like this for each page (except of course stickied threads only display on the 1st page). So for example:

It would look more organized without completely hiding it. I still think I would like to have the option though.

I agree that there should be some viewing of the item before it is lost.

I was under the assumption that that is what the "Trash Can" section was all about.
Knowing the trends of what is popular to mention or not is helpful.
Maybe display the closed item as an example of what not to do in the rules section.
Or a list of Names of people who have been banned comes to mind.
I like the "Trash Can" as it is.
Give and example to lead with. Give an example to fail with.
.....Just a thought.

I personally think it looks a lot more organized, I just hope people who do navigate the other pages realize that there's opened threads on the other pages. Glad JigSaw suggested this.

Davideo7 : vOh man, it looks a million times nicer.... Thank you so much for putting it into effect.  It will also help all those 'help' stickies stand out more and be easier to find.  Maybe it'll keep some unnecessary threads from being created.

Eventhough this is not what I originally had in mind its still a big upgrade from the previous display and it feels more organized. In future when sorting gets added in it will be perfect since people will get to chose their own display.
