What a joke! 3D Tic Tac Toe was released in 1980 by Atari on the Atari 2600. 3D Tic Tac Toe tries to update the Tic Tac Toe formula by adding 3 more squares to the game. This allows for there to be more ways to get 4 in a row. Wait 4 in a row, last time I played the original, it was 3 in a row. Anyway, this is an example of Atari screwing up what could have been a fun game. On with the review.
NOTE: Before reading, keep in mind I used a real Atari to play it, the game does not work to well on emulation.
Gameplay D+: The gameplay is mediocre at best. Especially if you play with the really slow computer player. It makes quick decisions in the first few variations, but in the later ones. Its really slow, you can wait for several minutes and that stupid CPU ain't going to make a decision. So your better off playing with a friend, but who would want to? Another problem that lies in the game is the control. Since the joysticks are stiff, it can hurt your wrist when you play this game.
Graphics F: The graphics are awful. There are only 2 colors and the squares are more chunky then they should be. The main problem is how confusing it can get when a lot of Xs and Os are on screen. The programmer should have made those a different color.
Sound D: There's only a few sound effects, but its Atari, so I'll give it some slack.
Addictiveness D: Its boring by yourself, but if you play with a real human you might have a few fun matches.
Depth C-: There's 8 variations for single player and 1 for 2 players. There's not much I can say.
Difficulty Medium: The difficulty is fairly balanced, there's a variation for everyone, the early ones for the beginners and the later ones for the experts, but be aware that the later ones suck.
OVERALL RATING D+
There's not a whole lot to like about this game, but you can have fun with it. As long as you play with someone.....
