E for everyone is something you see all the time in the Zelda series. Who can blame them? You play as some little kid, and unless you take the time to explain that he is the king of evil and has magical powers- you fight a very large pig as the main villain, but there is more than meets the eye in the legend of Zelda and I'm going to go through some of the games and their ratings.
The first three Zelda games are easily E for everyone. I was nine when it first came out and to this day, nothing stands out to me about the game or anything in it. Now let me focus on the first two Zelda games because what I'm about to say does not apply to a link to the past. The first two games are definitely not E for everyone, in terms of difficulty. I'm a grown man and I still ha vent been able to beat the first two games or figure out what the heck in supposed to be doing. I played the first game for about an hour yesterday and all I did was get a sword and find the first dungeon! And the second game is a lost cause, because I never even figured out what I was supposed to do. One of the only reasons I wouldn't call them incredibly difficult is that you didn't have to deal with stupid passwords and could just save. Okay, now for an actual analysis of the other games
Ocarina of time (1998) As a child, there is not much to worry about. You progress through three dungeons which are all pretty tame. I am scared of spiders though, and queen Gohma really scared me as a kid. Though as you pull the sword of evils bane, you enter a new game. This is essentaily the dark world from a link to the past. The villain took a nice little world, and turned it into terror. The next dungeons are filled with death, with the forest temple and its theme about death. The gorons being fed to volvolgia as a warning. The spirit temple and its general sad nature, Nobooru who I always thought was nice, was subdued by black magic and was hypnotized, which kind of scared me as a kid.
And then we have the shadow temple. The thing was full of re-deads which haunted my dreams as a kid. And yeah, you guys know I'm going to talk about this and I really do want to talk about it, the dead hand. This thing also haunted my dreams, and I can actually still remember them. I would be sitting in a chair watching TV and then a hand would grab me from behind the chair and I would dangle there for a second before the dead hand emerged and ate me. This enemy is hella scary and is considered by most fans the scariest of all enemies in the series. Lets go through your mind as you enter the room. "Okay, hands I wonder why they are there..." "okay, nothing is happening, maybe I should walk up to them and see what they do..." Holy crap, holy crap, oh my god it grabbed me" "AHHH whats that thing. And then you have your assorted jump scares when it lunges to bite you and when the hands grab you. Okay, in 1.1 and 1.2 of this game ganondorf had his blood color changed to green. Our parents don't want blood in the game, but yeah that creepy freaking boss is all well and good with our parents. Next we have phantom Gannon, who wasn't really all that scary except for the jump scare he gave you when you finally found him. Also its really annoying to go "Cool I get to fight ganondorf!" And then seeing, "PHANTOM GANON" Well, time for Majora's mask.
Majora's mask (2000) Yeah this was a really fun game with a lot of fun characters. But look at the premise, you are like a 7 year old kid, the moon is going to terminate every single living thing in the entire world, the skull kid and majora were just creepy as heck with all of the symbolism around them and the ways they act. There are a couple points I want to cover, and I'm going to cover this one first because I think I'm going to forget later, the deku butlers son. This isn't E for everyone, just because of the sadness. The man loves his son, who has suddenly vanished and the man has no idea where he is. During the credits you can then see him crying over the withered tree below the clock tower, implying that he found his son, dead. Then you have the "Them" quest which I just thought was generally creepy especially when you have to see romani get kidnapped. And now, the time before the dungeons. In the swamp you see a monkey get tortured, at snowhead you see a leader who died trying to save his people and didn't succeed, at great bay you try to save the dying mikau who was killed trying to help the one he loves (This part almost made me cry) and at Ikana you see all of these people that have died but are still fighting a war that has ended. Next you have the five minutes before and the boss fight in majoras mask. You go into the moon and expect a rocky wasteland, and you find this serenely creepy meadow, with a peacefully creepy tree. Then you find all of these innocently creepy children who look like the happy mask sales man, and all that symbolism that comes when you see the majora kid who was neglected by his friends. Next you get all the creepy text and fourth wall breaking of all the kids after you beat them. And then you get the boss fight which is kind of grotesque and creepy from all of those weird shrieks and those skin whips. And then you have the happy mask salesman himself who is a stalker with anger management issues who has the creepiest laugh of all time. Second of all, he is so creepy he is actually the villain in the manga!
Thanks for reading you guys, I'm sure you love reading what I have to type, post anything I might have left out in the comments and join me on my campaign to replace the dead hand with a unicorn.
