I brought home an 8 week old dog yesterday with my wife.

what suggestions do you have with training, games, and fun?  What did you do with your dog to help them have a happy, well-directed life?

Thanks!

training a dog is really pretty easy.
15 minutes a day and in a week the dog has learned.
Just get a bag of small biscuits and give it 1 every time.
E.g say sit and force it to sit with your hand. Then give a treat.
By day 4 it will make the association with the word and sitting.
I generaly did that for a week before doing the next command to avoid confusing it.
Equaly people complain about bathing there dog. Mine used to hide when he heard water, and chow on my hand when I tried to pull him out from his hiding spot.
Give it a light slap on the rear if it tries jumping out or anything (not hard, just enough it knows you dont approve) and give it a treat after every bath. Mine still dosent like baths but he knows its worth his while so he co-operates, even managed to get him to jump into the bath himself.
You should bathe it regularly, to get it used to it, and because when mine was little it always seemed to get fleas.
Id put a towel in the bath too, or its claws will scratch the surface.
Dont put too much water and try to keep the temperature mild, and apparently there ears are prone to infection, so really make sure you dry those.
The worst part of dog training is house training, I always felt bad for it, you're suposed to rub there face in it. They cant stand being surounded by it so they stop pretty quick when you do that.
Keeping them happy really isnt hard. A nice garden with flowers and theyre over the moon. Mine figured out how to open the cupboards, sponges were his favourite toys. Then feather dusters and laundry (every time i did it he'd crab my socks, he thought it was a game).
Id keep your shoe ware out of the way, he'd sit in mine and chew them apart, i had to check every time I went to put a pair on.
I had to throw away about 4 pairs of slippers in 2 months.
They like chewing so ideally, buy it a ball (preferably a soft one, squeeky), maybe a solid rubber one too, and a tug toy(handle for you, end for him to chew, mine loves that).
Keep its collar loose too because its constantly growing.
Most importantly, dont let it near cabling.
Either cover it, block it, or keep it off while the dogs around, they chew everything, and if it chews through cabling it could kill itself. If you give it enough to chew on that should keep it distracted. Puppys are off there heads, honestly.
You can keep it entertained by hiding treats too, its quite funny watching them hunting them down.

warmaker : There are a lot of great ideas on the web for dog training. Do a quick google search and you will have everything you need.

The main thing is just being consistent with however you decide how to train your dog. There are a bunch of ways you could go about it. Just choose one you are most comfortable with and go from there.

Also don't try to have sessions longer than 15 mins at a time. Remember that puppies are children...they have short attention spans and get tired easily.

What sort of a dog is it? If yours is a mixed breed, be happy since it means less going to the vet maybe.

For fun, get a pice of sturdy rope, give the other end to the dog and then "struggle" for it firmly but gently. If you "win",hold it up so that the doggie can try to reach it. Repeat.

Although you can train your dog on your own, I'd highly recommend looking into some obedience courses you can take. Not only will they help you learn how to train your puppy, you and the puppy will both have a blast doing it...and it helps socialize your dog, so that he can be around other dogs without going crazy. Lots of benefits. I will never have another dog that I do not take to the classes; they're just better behaved and it helps me with consistency, since I"m really bad at being stern enough with the puppy. They're just too cute to be mad at for very long.

Oh, my biggest piece of advice is this: remember, you are the boss. You are the pack leader and you are the one who makes all the rules. Do not let the dog take over your house, because you and the dog will both suffer.

My mother got a puppy recently.. The best thing you can do is to make sure you teach it what's right from wrong...

If it does something good give it a treat.. Eventually it will realise that this behaviour is rewarded...

If it does something bad tell it off.. Eventually it should realize that this behaviour is punished..

and that's about as basic as it gets...

Don't let it's cuteness rule over your decisions otherwise it could turn out to have a bad temperament towards humans..

and make sure to socialise it with other dogs... Preferably ones that aren't aggressive

When training a dog, be positive. If the dog does something bad, reprimand it right away or not at all. If you wait a minute, they'll forget completely what it was they did wrong.
Be nice and pet the dogs?
Be firm and kind. If your puppy is biting you, hold its mouth shut and pat it firmly on the nose, saying, "no." That will make the dog realize it shouldn't bite. But be consistent. If you're not consistent, the dogs will be confused and messed up and all that. Mhm. Yeah, watch that.

Anyhow.
If you want game ideas... Well... I don't have any lol. Sorry.
